  • Scunthorpe United FC gear up for a glamorous FA Cup Third Round tie against the mighty Tottenham Hotspur. Scunthorpe boss Bill Corkhill and captain Jeff Barker have left no stone unturned getting the Third Division side - and The Old Show Ground stadium - in ship-shape condition for the visit of the reigning league champions.
    BBC Television Newsreel is on hand to see if The Iron can cause an unlikely FA Cup upset against this most illustrious of Spurs teams.

    The players all look over 40. I checked and Jeff Barker was 37 and about to retire. Ron Burgess was 35.

    Scunthorpe...a certain 3 players had their first taste of league football there and all 3 at some point played for and captained England
    ...Kevin Keegan, Ray Clemence...and Ian Botham 😁

    The looked old because the war had just finished 7 years before and many of them had Shellshock/PTSD and seen destroyed bodies and homes.

    I know this was 70 years ago and the club probably didn't have much money but surely a basic line roller wouldn't have been out of the question?
