My Month with George - A Pub Documentary

- A project of passion, surrounded by those who relish the simpler, or for me, finer things in life. eclectic characters, the too-and-fro of meanderings and piss taking, and the effervescent flow of the amber nectar. This film is neither an analysis of London’s changing pubscape or a finger pointing rant directed at those who allow/encourage the mass closure of our small pubs, I’ll leave that to the plenty of pub aficionados who are more well versed and skilled than me to depict. This is a film about what and who. What makes the local pub a special place that we should do more to protect, and who are the people who thrived when they were booming, and who will ultimately suffer from their increasing decline.
I cannot claim to have truly captured the essence of the pub on film, that is a feat as impossible as reconstructing the atmosphere of the football stadium through the television, but I feel like I’ve come close enough. Not through nifty camera work or clever editing, a thunderous musical score or sexy montage sequences, but ironically through the people in the pub being just that, people in the pub.
At first, slightly wary of this newcomer with a camera in hand asking questions, then (not so slowly) opening up, welcoming me in, putting a pint in the pump for me, and talking. Their memories, their past, their sick relatives, their highs and lows and their community. Of which, for my month with the George, I was privileged to be a part of.
I don’t know the specifics but the story normally is the pubs owners, invariably Stonegate (Heineken/Punch/Enterprise) are the ones who buy up these community pubs, charge high rents, tie the lines and sell to the pub at a premium tax the profit, make landlords do their own repairs. Then when they somehow don’t turn such a grand profit they are the first pubs on the chopping board when shareholders are expecting returns to be sold off to developers.
It’s a monopoly, it should be illegal. This will be the death of working class English culture as we become sanitised with multinational coffee shops and luxury apartments we can’t afford anyway.
Yep, less and less spaces for working class culture. Not only is that damaging, it makes London such a less interesting place.
It isn’t just happening in England. My local here in the US, across the street from my barbershop, got sold then “remodeled” (still under construction; three original walls torn down, place gutted) to make way for a gastro-pub. What a shame. I really felt for the patrons of The George. I know exactly what it’s like. Cheers to all you good folks across the Pond. -Dave

A lot of pubs are closing because people can’t afford £5 or £6 a pint. It’s rip off. I used to drink in pubs until the prices got ridiculous. Now I brew my own beer. Even buying brewing kits at retail prices I can brew a pint for 65p and it’s much better quality than anything you buy in a pub. It will be costing the breweries even less than that as they are buying in bulk and 65p includes profit for the brewing kit manufacturer and the retailer. Yet pubs charge £5 or £6 a pint? Rip off.
Beautiful film. Their story is one of love and community. And a good landlord - or landlady in other establishments - made all that possible. "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened." Dr Seuss
Lovely words, glad you enjoyed the film

100%!
As a Southerner now living in the Welsh countryside, who no longer drinks due to health. This gives me fond memories of happy times in the Port & Anchor in Ramsgate. Miss those days.

@@mitcheyfilmIt's on my watch list. Really enjoyable. Proper people. Good work fella.
Feel the same about the " Barnaby Rudge" in Broadstairs. The premises was still a pub, but the atmosphere, regulars etc all went.
So sad to see yet another iconic Pub being closed in England. Slowly the culture of England is being erased and so is America and the majority of the west. This has to be preserved
Pricing landlords out of the game, pub games finished. Like most of the UK.. Us older lot are on the scrap heap. I'm only 51 and feel that already.. 10 years ago I had 14 pubs near me.. Now only one.. I'm glad I seen it all and I'm glad I'm genx. We deffo lived this life better and more fun.. But the uks fucked basically...

Really moving film which showed us once again what community really is and just how much we lose when special places like The George close down. Thank you for making this.

Great documentary, very nostalgic. I worked in a pub here in Ireland on and off for about 15 years. I work there the last few months it was open and it definitely left a hole in the community when it closed. A social hub or oasis for a lot of people. Thanks for capturing the essence of that in your film.
I'm glad you enjoyed the film, and yes a hole is left when these kind of pubs are gone

it might be a london pub but its a pub pub and a proper pub pub is a proper pub pub.
Great subject material and well shot / edited. I enjoyed it fellah,
Great you enjoyed it, thanks for the words
Really well done. Have never been to The George, but I’ve been to many a neighborhood bar / pub like it. It’s a shame to see the working class pushed out from the neighborhoods and communities they built and created. Thank you for documenting these last vestiges of inner city working class culture and community. Like many of the patrons attest to here, once these places are gone, they’re gone forever. Did you have a personal connection to The George ? Are you a professional documentarian, or just a person with a keen interest in the format? Thanks again
Hi, glad you enjoyed the film. Unfortunately I am not quite able to be calling myself professional (although that's the aim), and this was a pub I used to go in to on Arsenal match days. I loved it and was gutted it was closing and made this film with a friend for fun and as a record of a lovely place in a particular time. What a fantastic documentary and how sad to see the local pub at the heart of the community closing down, but sadly the rejigging of London and the removal of the local people because of the cost of housing and the city being repopulated by teetotallers putting it kindly and the so-called friends of the working class the Labour party.
Glad you enjoyed the film, we loved making it, and yes it is sad to see these community pubs closing at such a rate

I've never been to England, but if I had, I would have loved to have come to this pub and talk about Dennis Bergkamp and that Arsenal era and just chat and laugh with these wonderful people. I hope they are well.

Proper Londoners, salt of the earth. Same thing has happened in West London. My local used to be like this, had many great memories. It's now been turned into flats. Such a shame what has happened to London, but unfortunately Khan isn't interested and doing everything he can to ruin London.

Younger crowds go to the gym & starfooks these days.
Not realising pubs were a big part of community. Darts, pool, football teams 3 - 4 different groups of people getting together.
Sadly missing in today’s society.

Not just in London mate. Live🎉 in Brighton & many decent boozers have closed down over the years.
Lost count, some really good memories.
These places are good for the soul a community relaxing laughing together. Then it's gone and people a lost for a while.

👍Cheers, appreciated!!
My local when going to footie. Miss that pub.
Lovely Pub mate
Jurying the thatcher years all the breweries shut and went to2 or 3 the big breweries, whilst arguing everything had to have competition? And the big breweries shut the pubs on mass sold the pubs and the land for building houses? They never sold a pub to anyone else to be a pub, they didn’t want anyone competing with their pubs, still happening, fair competition is better for the consumer they said? Look at it now? Society will have a price to pay mark my words, Rot in hell Maggie!
Thatcher understood nothing...just like the fool Reagan....both hanging on to the words of the monetarists who believed the market would provide.....provide for who....the elites.

What the fck has it got to do with Thatcher? She hasn't been in power for nigh on 30 years years...
So basically the pubs in London have closed down as much as the population has been replaced
'Replaced'? 🤔
Went in there near the end of my alcoholic drinking years, I was totally lost and at the dropping off point.
Thank fuck I've been of the drink 🍻🍷 7 years, used to be like walking about in fucking a coma.

It’s probably a mosque now
Have they knocked it down or converted it yet?
Is it still closed, Google Street view for 2022 shows it with a new lick of paint ?
It has reopened I believe under new management but I'm not sure who the pub is now marketed to
Really well documented 👏🏼👏🏼
Cheers Connor I spotted you in the film doing what you do best!
Best Arsenal boozer by far🍻

Stop I'm weeping this is the Tories fault 100%😢
Red and Blue.
So many of the pubs that are left around that area have been colonised by middle-class 'hipster' types, sat around with earplugs in their ears looking at laptops and phones. The beer in such places is prohibitively expensive to anyone with a basic understanding of the value of money, (working class people.)
Yes I feel a lot of people are priced out and the original atmosphere is lost in the process

Thanks, I'll be sure to watch it tonight. Your film about the George pub was really excellent, but very saddening. I've lived in many places around England, and my God, it's a tragic situation what's happened to our pubs. In some places, like my hometown of Southampton, they've been absolutely decimated. Nowhere to go in some areas.
Very masonic ...cheers !
Why Fosters? Of all the great English beers.
he got out just in time around the corner was covid that would have finished it in the wrong way

Sweety😂@@Stephen-lx9nm
Labour hate you.
Fosters on tap😳 I can see why it’s closed
The reason the pubs are closing is because Londoners voted to import a population who don't drink beer
You closed yourselves down. Well done
How many "Immigrants" will live in the posh flats that these are converted into? Absolute Zero. It's all rich English people. You know nothing about this area. Keep it shut. Mug.
They didn’t vote for any of it , all GE’s are rigged , two party system , doesn’t matter which of these two parties gets in , they’re both the same , controlled by the same international criminal oligarchy cabal that uses every country like pawns are used on a chess board
Spot on the working class community of London was ethnically cleansed…. We gave up everything those brave men fought for on the beaches or Normandy voluntarily….
Certainly seems that way as an outsider (Irish) but happening in dublin too now sadly
I don't think they voted for their demise...stood by and did nothing yes but voted no.
The Illegal Immigrant Flats will look lovely when its refurbished.
Gammons boozer
OK Tarquin .
