    You don't see one engine up front and three in the back very often. 😉That train had a few tank cars loaded with crude oil and a bunch with ethanol.You see everything from sulfuric acid to liquid oxygen to chlorine in those things. Just read the numbers on the hazardous diamonds. There is a Wikipedia page listing the material the numbers represent. I've seen 5 cars in row street-running loaded with chlorine. You raise your eyebrows sometimes. The chances of an accident are _extremely_ small. But still, it's chlorine. lol Oh, and you're right. It did sound good.
    Lots of foreign power lately and lots more DPUs than there used to be. I ain't complaining!
    NS engine 7644 showed up again. See that one a lot in your videos.
    Thanks so much for taking us with you again, JT and I'll see y'all next video.

    Apparently somebody made a major miscalculation for not putting enough power on the first train. Trusting that once the pushers cut off its fairly level track the rest of the way to its destination but somehow I picture them averaging 35 mph at best. For the loaded coil train and the type of car that was used those coils look like the passengers on the Cincinnati Cinder Sniffer trip all sitting forward in one straight line. Thanks for covering that heavy hitting section of NS Main Line trackage

    Here in the UK in the days of steam we had special 'banking' engines near hills that only had the job of pushing heavy trains up hills. They were designed a bit different from normal engines and were very powerful with roughly double the power of a normal engine. They would typically sit in a siding at the bottom of the hill, waiting for a train to pass then slide out and run up behind and push the train uncoupled.

      @@robertheinkel6225 Yes they were huge specially built one of a kind engines and unusual wheel combinations. One of a kind and very difficult for the crew to drive because they were in the smoke of the train they were pushing and their own smoke especially in a tunnel. They didn't go far and operated at low speed with massive tractive power on starting unlike a normal engine. The steepest hill on British railways is near where I live called Lickey Hill and had its own very famous banking engine called Big Bertha. You can look it up on Wiki.

    Hello from the UK. So a top and tail where the tail is bigger than the top! Those locomotives at the back were a bit of a mixture, NS, UP and BNSF. Do the rival companies usually help each other out like this?

    • @clineshaunt
      @clineshaunt ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I think what they do is lease each other's locomotives if they need it. I think to sometimes too when trains from different companies are going to a destination that is not on their trackage, they'll just keep the same locomotives all the way as opposed to switching the locomotives to whatever company owns the trackage.

    • @robertf3479
      @robertf3479 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@clineshaunt That's my understanding as well, especially the leasing part. I also think we are seeing "Power Pooling" where roads that are part of the "pool" can "donate" seasonally unneeded power and later draw power and assign it as needed. This would explain seeing NS or CSX (eastern roads) power in Oregon or California as well as BNSF and UP power all the way over on the east coast running repeatedly over the same trackage before eventually heading "home" as that road's seasonal traffic picks up.

    • @clineshaunt

    Thank you for another video from the Crescent Springs/Erlanger, Kentucky area, Jaw Tooth! I do not understand why Norfolk Southern does not send a train up this hill from the Ohio River to Erlanger, Kentucky without enough horsepower to move the train up to Erlanger without stalling. Why would you take the chance of having the train stall and then you must waste time sending additional power to move the train? There were a lot of truck frames on that first train.

  • @BudgieJane
    @BudgieJane ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I think it is unprofessional on the part of those who make up the trains and allocate power to them if they do not give the train adequate power so that it stalls on steep gradients. The exception to that, of course, is if helper power is added for the steep grades and removed when it is no longer needed. The outcome of that train stalling is a delay to the train itself while they are finding the extra power, and delays to its following train(s), and if the power has to go down the hill first there could be delays to trains running in the opposite direction. Delays mean loss of time, and, as we all know, time's money these days. Not very good for a company that runs two-mile-long trains in order to reduce operating costs and make greater profits.
    Yes, I agree with your other followers who say that this is what railfanning is about, but it's also about seeing the railroad getting things right first time.

    I have watched NS trains since their old N&W days when they used to run GP9s and the old ALCOs. Most of my viewing was on the Pocahontas Subdivision and Deepwater Subdivision. Today I watch them between Bristol and Roanoke. NS has chosen to run on the cheap side of things in recent years. They have made their trains longer by putting a DPU in the middle of the train and nothing on the rear. These motive power reductions haven't been small, but massive. It used to be on the Pokey one could see two or three 4,400 horsepower units on the front and two to four 4,400 horsepower units on the rear. Now you see two 4,400 horsepower on the front, one 4,400 horsepower DPU in the middle and nothing on the rear! They literally take a run at some hills and pray they don't have to stop or simply stall out!!! Rural Retreat, VA is the summit point between Bristol and Roanoke. The other day a mixed freight was running Bristol to Roanoke. The train comes into view near stalling speed with only one 4,400 GE on the front and it was going 8 to 10 mph. Halfway back they had a 4,400 EMD and that was it. It must have been a 6,000 foot train!!! It took forever for the train to clear the crossing in Rural Retreat. It did speed up some as it started down grade. I have seen several stalled trains. I know fuel is expensive, but I also know NS buys fuel futures and not spot market fuel. It used to be NS was managed by people who came up in the company in motive power, now it is managed by bean counters that just focus on EBIT, sales and cashflow. On time delivery means something, but the only thing that seems to run on time are Intermodal Coal and Sea Container trains. I always enjoy your great videos! Thank you!!! 👍

I guess that somewhere out west ( Seligman AZ maybe ) there will be a few NS locomotives either pulling a train or in a yard waiting to go - the aforementioned town is on Route 66 - I stopped there on my way to the Grand Canyon from Las Vegas. The remoteness of the place is hard to believe, but there it is.

    Yeah, No wonder the first train stalled out. No way one locomotive was gonna pull all that up a steep grade. That was crazy. I think Chessie wanted to drive the truck for you, Jawtooth.

    I've always wondered why you call union pacific and bnsf "foreign power"? Anyway another great video 📹

    • @emwungarand
      @emwungarand ปีที่แล้ว

      East of the Mississippi River all tracks are owned by CSX and Norfolk Southern. That makes BNSF and UP "foreign". CP, Ferromex, and other lines would also be considered thus.

    • @dsmith9964
      @dsmith9964 ปีที่แล้ว

      When a locomotive is leased to another railroad, it is called 'foreign' power because it is not on its 'home' tracks.

    LOL! Saw EVWR had Union Pacific motors labeled over hooked up to the PAL green motors. Looks like a John Deere collection green and yellow.

    You figure the wisdom of the railroad would put on extra power on that Hill if they know the length of and the weight of the trains

    Great video of the trains at the RATHOLE line! Its amazing of how that incline can put a hurting on a train especially when its loaded. But they should have DPU's either in the middle or at the bottom if they know they're heading North! But apparently they don't think abt it. Anyways, nice job as always JT and appreciate all your time and effort my friend! Cheers from Delmar, Delaware

    I have a question maybe someone can answer. When they build these long trains, at what point does someone say, "that's long enough." With these super long trains, what's the limit? 🤔 Something tells me it's a complex answer, not just a matter of tacking on more & more cars.

    • @robertheinkel6225
      @robertheinkel6225 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A lot of times the limit is determined by the length of available sidings, when needed on single track main lines.

    • @johnwinter8273
      @johnwinter8273 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robertheinkel6225 Good point. But on double track mainlines like BNSF & UP have out west, I wonder what their logistic policy is for maximum train length since they don't have to worry about siding lengths.

    Whoever made the motive power decision on that first train probably got a "talking to" afterward from the Road Foreman for not taking the cold weather into account. Wheel bearings have a tendency to roll a little less freely when they get cold. Roller bearings aren't as cantankerous as the old style "friction bearings," but they still need to be taken into account. I also wonder if some of those loads are heavier than the manifest says.
