    This was just a fun little matchup because I thought they were similar sized
    But, nevertheless, Full tang takes on all one piece construction

    Was there ever a doubt? That said, the Mossy Oak is $22, and sometimes it's nice to bring a stainless steel knife, instead of carbon steel. That Mossy Oak is a great knife for the money.

      I had the Mossy Oak Bowie awhile back & i have to ADMIT it was tough as Granite Rocks !!
      I on purpose, chopped, batoned with it, threw it at trees, boards, the ground.
      & it never failed 1 bit or barely even got scratched.
      Sometimes......Cheap knives are NOT only crappy wall hangers !!
      Sometimes.
      💯👍👊💪

    And here we are a couple of years later. Cold Steel $70, Mossy Oak $20. Each one down 10% in price, nothing else changed. Would I hike back a couple miles to retrieve my forgotton Mossy Oak? Nah, probably not. Cold steel? Nah, proably just replace it with a Mossy Oak so I wouldn't feel bad if it happened again.

    I prefer at least 440A instead of that 3cr13 stuff.. 440A is what I call good enough.. holds edge long enough to not annoy you with constant need for resharpening..and sharpens easy enough. And also 440A is tough enough on large blades like my mtech 151. I also have that 3cr13 Swiss tech..which is same a the mossy oak. The grinds on the blade is uneven on some of the ones I bought.

    I have the 7 inch Mossy oak Bowie. It's fun to play w. I really like a better quality, full tang Bowie that has a blade longer than 7 inches. 9 to 12 inches is nice. 7 inch is considered a large knife but not so much for a bowie

    Also, I find a convex grind less likely to bind into wood. The hollow grind is the easiest to bind into the wood. After that dropped forged survivalist sharpens down a bit, you can put a convex grind into the edge, which will mimic the Cold Steel San Mai that you have. That will give you more edge stability, less binding, and less drag cutting into wood. I've been studying the grinds of the many knives that I have and testing them over the years..especially now that I'm forging my own blades...all without power hammer or sanding belt, just a diamond stone.

    that Mossy Oak, I just looked it up has 3CR13 stainless which is pretty low carbon. However, my Schrade Parang machete, in also 3CR13 chops (although it is easy to get stuck into wood) many things and still is pretty sharp. Maybe because of the 20 plus degree per side factory angle.

      I have the Rough Ryder Black Mule Bowie, which is also 3Cr13. It performs very well in tests, and has a nice sheath. It only cost me $27 all included from SMKW. Sometimes even cheap stainless can perform, if properly heat treated.

    • @iruwild
      @iruwild ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DDDYLN yeah, 3cr13 isn't expensive, but it is tough, which is what you want in a big blade. I have a silver stag Alaaskan camp knife D2 very thin stick tang, maybe only 0.25 width, that.snapped off which chopping palm leaves.

      @@iruwild that's unfortunate to hear, as I've considered buying a D2 steel knife. I appreciate the knowledge. Personally, I prefer 1075 with a spring temper, or spring steels like 5160. Ontario switched all their 1095 blades to 1075, because the 1095 was prone to chipping and catastrophic failure (like what you experienced with D2). Cold Steel's SK-5 is roughly 1080. So like Ontario, it's more likely to roll an edge than chip or break catastrophically. While I have a master's in mechanical engineering, I'm not a metallurgist. According to the experts, it's difficult to properly heat treat 1095. There's apparently a lot less room for error in the process, than there is with mid-high carbon steels like 1075. All that said, it's nice to have some good stainless knives if you know you can't keep them dry or oiled. I actually bought my mom the Swiss Tech version of this Mossy Oak Bowie. Several companies brand the same Chinese knife. Since it's Thanksgiving, and she has it stuffed I'm a closet corner, still in the box, I'm going to ask her if I can have it. I only have small and very large stainless knives. It would be nice to have one with an 8.5" blade.

      For low carbon it sure AF throws sparks from a ferro rod.MO has a good Chinese contractor.May be made in same plant as other brand name knives.
