He might of not been a good film director but he was certainly an inspirational one.
In Burton's depiction of him he didn't care about the critiscms of his film, in his eyes he was doing what he loved and had a deep passion for film. He also didn't care about what people thought of him as long as he was happy (wearing the women clothes), but he was not selfish. Something that we can all aspire to do with this competitive nature of our workplace and education system.

I have to say...I watched plan 9 from out of space years ago...and, considering some of the shitty Sci-fi B-movies that came out around that time, I really didn't think it was much worse...that, and there is obviously the unmistakable Wood style that makes them very watchable. Its interesting how, without saying a word and sometimes telling completely fantastical type stores, you can still get a sense of the person behind the camera through how they tell a story...you could always tell that Ed Wood was a unique individual, if not a particularly talent movie maker...or maybe he was in a weird way, and that is why we still remember him today!

Wood's films had a certain "charm" to them. You don't see that today, and it's rare in general for films like this to have been successful at all, but Woods' films were.
There is a certain amount of imagination required by the viewer, and when one applies that, you feel as if YOU are part of the story. It's fascinating. I don't know how much, or if any, of this was intentional on Wood's part, but it is indeed present in almost all of his work--it's his style. In order to "get" what he was showing and telling you, you had to "play along" as an audience member with a certain level of imagination and make-believe that the actors themselves are required when playing a character.
When you simply watch the film as a third-person, and merely sit back to enjoy it, you don't get this, and for that the films appear "cheap", poorly written, or terribly produced. But when you immerse yourself as PART of the experience (the way I suspect Wood did when he was directing the films) it takes on a whole new life, as if you've lifted a veil and have become the missing cast member. The audiences willingness to "play along" is quintessential to the enjoyment of his work. When you do, you're playing along WITH the film, and you'll also be aware of Wood's ability to somehow fit the actors into the scene in such a way that this quality is present in almost every scene.
Ed Wood's films; not for the unimaginative, and too often unappreciated. He knew very well that film making was "make-believe", and created moments for the viewer to indulge themselves in this world of make-believe. It's as if you can still play like a child in a world of pretending and make-believe, any time you view the films, at any age. Charming, imaginative, artistic, humorous, insightful, resourceful, timeless, and brilliant.

Kathy Wood, who appears 14:50 and a number of other places in this film was Ed's final wife. I notice they never mentioned that she ignored his screams for help while Ed was dying of a heart attack. Both her and Ed may of been quarreling or mad at each other at the time, but regardless he yelled for her to help him and she refused. After about 20 minutes of not hearing him in the next room she sent a friend in to check on him, only to find him dead. She stated that his eyes and mouth were both wide open, his hands clutching his blanket. She said he had a look of absolute terror on his face, like he saw Hell just before he passed. I tend to think he looked as he did because his wife wasn't helping him. Who knows. A sad end to a sad life.

Stormed the beach attacking an enemy shooting back? We need many, many more role models like Ed Wood. Mr. Wood, if you were only alive in 2020 and witnessed the riots, the homelessness, AIDS and global warming. Then cross dressing would be seen for what it really is, a preference that hurts no one.

What ever else he was , at age 17, right after Pearl Harbor he enlisted in the US Marines. He wound up on body recovery and retrieval at Tarawa , one hell of a Marine corp mistake, that they learned never to duplicate. He became severly ill from mosquito born worms and was assigned to light duty as a typist. Could his alcoholism in part have been from his goulish experiences at Tarawa...

Ed Wood never, as a US Marine, left America to see active service. He was in a Marine anti-aircraft unit stationed in the USA during WW2. He came under fire from Japanese soldiers on Tarawa, but he was collecting corpses while serving as a clerk.

33:49 Did he say "and he rented it all the time"? How could Ed Wood have rented 'Plan 9' if he died in 1978? Video stores must have been around longer than I thought.
