Hi! I'm from Thailand and a fan of your Fun With Flags series. Thank you so much for making video about our flags.
First of all, I think the character depicting Siamese people in the first slide is too Indian, and that depicting King Rama II is too Chinese.
Now, let me share some information about Siamese/Thai flags.
    1. An elephant was added to the flag with Chakra by King Rama II, because he received 3 white elephants, which, for mainland southeast Asian, were the symbol of the king of kings.
    2. When was the Chakra removed from the flag is quite confusing. The royal gazette said that King Rama IV ordered to remove the Chakra because it is the symbol of the dynasty, not for the people. But there is an evidence from 1943, in the reign of King Rama III, showing that the white elephant flag without Chakra was used. Your video mixed these together making it wrong because King Rama IV acceded to the throne in 1851.
    3. The elephant with accessories flag is more confusing. I searched the royal gazette and found that this kind of flag was declared as a naval ensign in 1897, while the 'National Flag' for civilians was still the plain elephant flag. Then, in 1910, King Rama VI changed the 'National Flag' to the elephant with accessories flag used as a state flag, while the five red and white stripe horizon flag was declared as a commercial flag.
    4. One of the reasons why King Rama VI added dark blue color to the national flag is that it is the color of his birthday (Saturday). That's why it represents the monarchy.

Thanks for covering my country's flag.
A little more details for you guys:
About the "chakram" ('จักร' chak/jak; an indian discus), it is an ancient symbol found throughout history of Thailand, especially in the "bullet coin" (old siamese coinage) of the Sukhothai period up to the early Rattanakosin period (current kingdom). It represent the power of the divine kingship, as it is a weapon of the Hindu god, Vishnu, the protector/guardian god of Hindu Trinity. Almost all Thai kings, by tradition, claims divine sanctioned authority as a reincarnation of Rama, the avatar of Vishnu, bearing the Rama as part of their ceremonial name. All of the monarchs in the current dynasty bear the title Rama, the current king is Rama X.
Also the current Chakri dynasty, established by Rama I, use the chakram as the symbol, together with the "trisula" ('ตรีศูล'; trident) ["Chakri" is from chak (chakram) + tri (trisula) = chaktri → chakri] Rama I, was a noble of the late Ayutthaya period. After the Fall of Ayutthaya (to the Burmese) he became the powerful general and fought back the Burmese during the Thonburi period, when he was appointed the title of Lord "Chakri Sri Ongarak" (พระยาจักรีศรีองครักษ์), essentially a Prime Minister and Lord Protector of the Northern Provinces. After the King of Thonburi went mad (historian thinks that the king might have a PTSD), and the rebellion rose up, he put down the rebellion and was invited to replace the mad king. So, he became Rama I, and established a dynasty under his old title, the Chakri dynasty. That's why the chakram or the discus is an important symbol, and was put on the national flag.
For the elephant on the third flag and forward, it is no ordinary elephant, it's a white elephant which is one of the symbol of emperor. In ayutthaya period one king said to received 7 of them, so his name became "Maha Chakrabatra" ('มหาจักรพรรดิ' Maha Chakraphat/Maha Jakkapat) literally translates to "Great Emperor", the only king to have this title.
About the removal of elephant, the "upside down" story is most likely a folk-story, but one Thai researcher dig out the historical record and found that it have to do more with how difficult it is to draw the elephant, because at that time the technology like printing or industrial manufacture of fabric is still not reach Thailand and locals have to paint and draw the flag by hand so it is easier to just have a stripe instead.

The Elephant is an old thai symbol (I don't really know what it stands for), but it was often used in symbols and emblems long before todays thai kingdom 8it once was a symbol for Ayutthaya itself). So it might be due to its location and cultural landscape, that Thailand included it in its national flag.

    • @tian_tst
      @tian_tst 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

It is said that the elephant was included in Siamese flag because King Rama II received 3 white elephants, which, for mainland southeast Asia, are the symbol of the king of kings.

Take note, only the white elephant appears on the thai flag. It's actually represents the power of the king over his kingdom since the white elephant can only be possessed by the king ( this is ancient believe and practice). Not only that ,the white elephants dresses up as in the battle as if the king himself will command the battle on the neck of it.
In history up until now . The white elephant has been given the nobility status by the king as they get the rank of hi peer.

    Hi, from a Thai
The history is quite accurate. Good reserch and thank you for your interest in Thailand :)
Your question in the middle of the video was why we changed into a 5 stripes red and white color. In that time, during the crisis. The elephant drawing is too complicated so we changed. In order to differentiate the normal red fabric and the flag we decided to go for 5 stripes as we have gained the knowledge of the Europians flag were mostly stripes we decided to go along (so that they won’t think we are lower class country and start to conquer us.) the reson why it is red because at that time we still wear red (Thai style) pants and top less. Red is easy to find and quite common than other colors. I am *not sure* what the meanings behind the 5 red stripes mean but I guess it actually mean the same as the red white blue white red. After that, they changed the color that represent the Royal family or the King in order to put them higher than the red that represent people. At that time as a monarchy, we really honor the King and the King take good cares of the people. This is why we can govern as a monarchy for so long.
    Hope this helps
    :)

I'm a native Thai and still haven't known this much history about our flags! Great series!
Anyway, one point I'd like to make out is that there are many religions being adopted in Thailand. Of course, the majority of Thai people are Buddhists. However, there are also Muslims, Christians, Hindus, Sikh and a few other. The White stripe, therefore, essentially represents "religions" in general, not particularly Buddhism. In Thailand, at 8.00am and 8.00pm of every day, TV stations are required to broadcast Thailand's national anthem and in it, they visually portray people of every religion when they are making reference to the ''White Stripe" of the flag.

The red flag was chosen because our ancestors fly the dutch flag and the french demand to take it down because Siam is not dutch and the flag with the white elephant on the gold plate is not in the time of King Mongkut (Rama IV) It's actually King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) and the flag with the red and white stripes chosen by Rama VI because when he went to Uthai Thani (a Province in Thailand) His Majesty notice that the flag was hung upside-down, and because the elephant symbolize Thailand and the Monarchy his Majesty changed it to not be able to go upside-down so the second to last flag history was Ok also the Rama V made the rule that the elephant must face the pole always by the way it's pronunce Loy for Loei so keep the work... Oh and Rama II you draw yeah...look up his picture first

The primary reason for changing the flag to "Thong Tri-rong" ธงไตรรงค์ (ธง means a flag, รงค์ means a color and ไตร is tri means three or triple) was to modernized the country and make her stands as equal to western powers at the time.
Since all of their flags are using primarily three colors (Red White and Blue) hence Thong Tri-rong.

At 06:20 your pronunciation of "Thong Trairong" is 80% correct
    1. "Thong" ธง should pronounce with lower (สามัญ) tone (same tone and vowel as "Rong" รงค์)
    2. the syllabel "Trai" ไตร should pronounce "Tr" sound with your tongue touch at your upper lip
    (ไตร not ทรัย sound)
But apart from that 2 mini distort
All others pronunciation (consonant,vowel,tone,short-long sound) are perfect
