    Wonderful review my friend. I don't watch many knife reviews because you tell me everything I need to hear.. I'm not a big Spyderco fan but I really like this little knife. Three inches is about I need in a folder so this one fits perfectly. I love the constant curve of the edge and there is something about the leaf pattern that gives the blade more symmetry.. Given all that, I can live with that big ol' hole on it..
    Always a pleasure to catch up and listen to you Denis. Hope your having a wonderful week too. :-)

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Sara.
      I was/am not a big Spyderco fan. But at some point I ended up having a few of their models. I guess that there are few knife making companies that have such a big diversity. They have something to fit every need. They are not all perfect but with a bit of work you can definitely find a Spyderco to fit your needs. I do wish that they paid a bit more attention to some small details.
      A 3 inch blade is perfect for edc tasks in my opinion as well. And the Sage can really handle some bigger tasks. The curve of the blade gives a really nice belly throughout the cut which does very well. This is one of those knives that I can appreciate for more than just looks. Performance and comfort are also very good. And it's fun to play with :) Which is really what I use it 70% of the time! :)

    i really like your reviews on knifes in general because your so dam honest about the important things like what the EDC should be and what to look for,i have some other spyderco folders but none i would pack as a ECD all the time,so i had a look at the sage #1 and also think it would fit the bill as my ECD folder,should be hear this week,and i am really looking forward to owning this little knife,i think you had something to do with this ! thanks for that and your other videos are also vary helpful to,take care .

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the nice comment.
      I am always trying to touch on points that would interest me if I did not own the knife.
      Like many others, I like knives that can handle all the tasks you can throw at them but if we are honest, most of us, in everyday use, will mainly cut a few pieces of cardboard, open some mail, and maybe prepare lunch with our edc folders.
      The Sage is really good for that. Of course it can also tackle some bigger tasks but not as well as others.
      I still carry it off and on and I still like it.

      The Sage 2 is the one with the framelock if I am not mistaking. I always favored the linerlock to the framelock but I have to admit that the Sage 2 looks better than the Sage 1.

    It’s a great knife. It’s smooth because the blade pivot area also has a pin which rides in a groove to keep it strong and stable. My Sage 5 has the Spyderco compression lock.

    Thanks, I've been looking at the Sage-3 Bolt Action CF for a while now & I like your reviews because you don't just cut phone books & printer paper! I also like how they put the CF on both sides even if it is a laminate.

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dano Martinez I like the bolt action locking system. Keeps the knife symmetrical. One thing that I really like. That is why I like backlocks. the only downside with most backlocks is that the knife scan sometimes feel unstable in hand. The axis locks I have from benchmade do not have that problem and the bolt action locking systems I have held in hand from spyderco felt really good

    • @danofiremano
      @danofiremano 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      SpartanJohns I have a few BM's with the Axis Lock and like them a lot. I like my Spyderco's just as much, but that Axis Lock is great for single handed operation. I'm hoping the Bolt Lock is the same!

    Fantastic video Denis! I really miss Bluntruth4u and wish he would return because he had a great way to show so many aspects of the knives he showcased.

      traderjoes Steve was one of those guys... One of the original knife nuts here on youtube and I really liked his reviews and tests. Bravo 1, Military, Para2, Sage 1, RAT 1, ESEE 3...all knives that I was interested in thanks to his reviews. I have to agree...a compression lock Sage would be cool. The framelock Sage does look great! I realy like how they thought things out with this model:something for everyone!

    Der Anfang war großartig,Denis....toll in Szene gesetzt,das Sage.
    Das Sage ist genau wie das Para2 ein großer Wurf von Spyderco....an diesem Modell ist einfach nichts schlecht.
    Mir fehlt der letzte Zentimeter am Griff,ansonsten hätte ich ein Sage schon längst wieder in meiner Sammlung.
    Beste Grüße

      @SpartanJohns  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      stephan123321 Hallo Stephan, Zum glueck habe ich kleinere Haende wie du.Das Para2 gefaaellt mir immer noch und ich wuerde es vor das Sage fuer haertere arbeiten immer vorziehen. Als edc, obwohl das Sage ein nicht so angenehmen griff hat wie das Para 2, wuerde ich es dennoch nehmen. Weil es eben nicht so taktisch ausschaut. Wie gesagt, beim Karton schneiden hat es wirklich klasse arbeit geleistet.VGDenis

    Moin!
    The Sage is a great looking knife. Definitely one of my favourite Spyderco knives beside the Domino or the Dice.
    I would like to buy AND use more Spyderco knives like the Sage. But due to German laws, I'm not allowed to carry them in public. So they would become more or less useless for me, because I don't want to buy knives only for showcase them.
    Cheers,
    Claus

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Claus-L. Müller I understand how that feels like. I sometimes make time in my weekend to go out and play with a particular fixed blade.
      Whenever I go to Germany I always take a Vic. But I do enjoy Spyderco knives. Few companies have such a great diversity!

    i love my paramilitary 2 ,but you are correct my friend the sage is a great edc and the native 5 in g10 s35vn is great to they are my most carry knife as in spyderco line ,always great to watch your review simply but very good ,all the best my friend

      VITO LAGINESTRA Thank you
      Blunttruth4u also presented the Native 4 I think(S30V blade and frn handle) and that one also got my attention.
      The Native and the Sage are very similar and I think that they are both meant for the same kind of job. The Native 5 looks to be a bit more comfortable than the sage

    • @PotenzaVito
      @PotenzaVito 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      SpartanJohns the native 5 in g10 s35vn is about the same as the sage ,just small difference in blade shape ,but very comfortable ,if you like the way the sage feel in your hand you will not be disappointed with the native 5 do not go for the frn handle model ,the n5 is much better fit and finish superb ,you want regret ,all the best my friend ,

    Great review! I've never been a fan of how Spyderco's look, but I must admit, most of the models I have handled I start to like... a lot!!! They don't "look" like a traditional knife, but it seems the designers do have "use" over "looks" in the equation at least in the ones Ive handled. I think I might pick up a Sage. Thanks again
    !!!

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      in the beginning I said the same thing.
      but as time went by I really started to like their models.
      being honest, I think that there is a reason why Spyderco is such a well known brand. They make decent quality knives and they don't go overboard putting steep edge angles on them.
      I think that is an important point.
      Even if there are a few knives from them I do not like there are much more Spyderco's that I really like and want to try out
      I still think that for edc tasks the Sage 1 is a really good pick
      Thanks

      LandBender If you are only thinking about edc tasks I can only recommend the Sage. If you want a tactical knife with a longer blade...go with the Para2
      The Sage looks less threatening also...

      As a common man who spends only one day a week in the woods and the other time with my family a wife and 3 kids.I think a spyderco sage1 plus a mora No.2 I also have a heavy axe I wa wondering if could you recommended a large straight blade for under 100$ US that I can use since my play budget is limited to 100 a month

    • @SpartanJohns
      @SpartanJohns  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thorin dyer for heavy duty tasks I can really recommend ESEE. Their warranty is hard to beat especially if you live in the States. If you break it, they replace it. Easy.
      I do not know exactly what you mean by "large" straight blade. I own the ESEE Junglas. 10 inch blade and I really like it for playing around. But as you have an axe that might not be needed. If you mean something around 6 inches.....I have been thinking of getting an ESEE 6. I do not know how htey are but that would be my next ESEE purchase.
      A good bushcraft knife is the Enzo Trapper. But that has a blade of only 4 inches.
      A great survival/camping knife with a blade of 4 inches is the ESEE 4. You would need to reduce the edge angle a bit for finer works as it does have a thin handle but once you do that it will also be a knife for finer tasks.
      Hope this helps a bit.
      These are knives, or brands that are around the 100 dollar mark and of which I have videos on. Except the Esee 6. That is still on my wish list.

    • @newhuskytwenty
      @newhuskytwenty 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +thorin dyer Change the axe (specially if it is not light) for a Bahco Laplander folding saw, you won't regret, believe me! Faster cuts, easier, less effort means less calories wasted which is something critical in a real survival scenario, no risk to cut yourself badly far from medical care... and many other reasons.
      On the other hand I love Spydercos and I have a lot of them but for practical tasks a cheap Opinel #10 beats the crap out of any sophisticated expensive folder, no carbon fiber needed. Why? For the same reason you use a Mora fixed instead a Esse 3, if you broke it you won't regret it.

    which do you suggest the sage 1 or the sage 2 titanium frame lock or sage 3. which do you think would show wear and hold up the best... I already have the pm2 and was trying to decide on a sage. but I worry about the wear on the titanium lockup

    Hey Denis,
    ich weiss nicht genau ob es das Video selbst war oder etwas anderes, aber es war ein klein wenig leise. Ansonsten wie gewohnt ein sehr schönes Video. Ich finde wenn du sagst ein Messer ist sehr gut, ist das noch ein bisschen mehr wert als bei vielen anderen. Warum? Naja weil du deine Messer intensiver benutzt als die meisten. Die haben ein Messer 1-2 Wochen getragen, 3 Fäden geschnitten und meinen sie wüssten was Sache ist. Du testest die Messer und das unter Bedingungen für die sie oft nicht gemacht sind, also EDC Folder im Wald.
    Gruss,

      +Jeremy Madsen Taiwan is not The Republic of China. And in my opinion both make excellent knives. I like the Sage. To this day I carry it sometimes. As a small edc blade it is near perfection.

      +SpartanJohns They do make good knives. Taiwan is actually the Republic of China (not to be confused with People's Republic of China), unless Wikipedia is lying, which they do sometimes: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taiwan

      +Jeremy Madsen I always looked at the knife, not where it was made. BLUNTTRUTH4U's review of this knife convinced me to buy it. I care little for the stamps on the blade...be it steel or country. it it feels right and holds an edge...i might try it
      If it would have been made in the USA it would have cost much more...
      I have the Native4....and I must say....the Tenacious I had was on par for fit and finish

      +SpartanJohns Well said. I mean, I have some of those Ganzos and they're built tough. Love those knives. And, the Taiwanese knives I have are pretty much perfection. Thanks for sharing your viewpoints, love your vids.

      shannonandsheila1 My US knives so far have been about equal to the Taiwanese fit and finish. I've never had an issue out of either country. I prefer to carry US knives for pride of ownership reasons. I guess I did get one Taiwanese made knife that had a dull edge from the factory, but it was AUS-8, so it sharpened easily.

      dseed Thanks! I watched your video where you presented the ZT350.
      I also have a Manix. Mine is an older version that I got from Cliffstamp.
      Really a beast! :)

    Great review, I also have a few other Spyderco's and some higher end knives, but this it the one I find myself reach for for the most. Perfect size for EDC. My only wish, is that Spyderco would put a ball bearing in this one like the Manix 2. Nice, honest review, thank you..

      I am not quite sure what you mean. ball bearing washers? If that is what you mean then I must say: I know exactly what you mean. Lately I had to clean it at least once a month because it got really scratchy.
