With the 2024 reboot of You Bet just around the corner (albeit only 2 episodes), I thought this would be a great game show to take a look back at. What are your memories of this show? Any favourite challenges? Let us know in the comments below. Enjoy everyone - hard at work on the next video now 😁
I often mention this show to people and they can rarely remember it. Was a big part of my youth, and always used to enjoy the re-runs shown on Challenge. Great little documentary, thanks for the effort you put into these.
Excellent video - thanks so much for this. My childhood memories flooding back. I can’t believe the footballer missed that open goal after all his excellent skill in the build up!
Wow - Thank you for giving 'Wetten, dass...?' and the hosts Elstner/Gottschalk so much credit! I didn't know the show had international copies. Normally it's the German TV that copies US and UK shows. 'Wetten, dass..?' was THE show to watch growing up in the 80s and 90s. It was such a huge thing when absolute top of the tops world stars like Michael Jackson, Madonna or Take That visited the show. Since the show was produced by German, Austrian and Swiss national TV stations, the show was shown in all 3 countries simultaneously. Imagine having like 6 channels and 3 show the same show. But that's how it was and it was great.
Remember You Bet growing up and was a Saturday night staple for the family....Remember Matthew Kelly, Bruce Forsyth and Darren Day presenting it over the years and am so pleased it's back soon even if it's only for two episodes...Great video and insight into a British Saturday night favourite...👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
@@officialbackintheday absolutely spot on...Sat nite viewing now is almost embarrassing tbh...Gone are the days of shows like You Bet where all the families watching would get involved from their living rooms trying to guess who'd complete their challenges and whi wouldn't!!!...Sat night used to be a family TV 📺 night when I was growing up (Born in 1979) in the 80's and nineties but now it's non existent almost...Kudos to u on you're content my friend 👏🏻👏🏻
I still revisit the, "you bet" uploads on TH-cam every now and then. I loved that show as a kid. I'd watch it at my grandparents on a Saturday evening. Such a great show.
Childhood favourite, this one. :) A couple of standout challenges :- A Frisbee challenge that was deliberately sabotaged by the production crew. So they could stitch up an arachnophobic Pat Sharp with a Tarantula based forfeit. A helicopter based challenge that featured "Mikey" from Interceptor. Along with the chopper from that show with the running man logos covered up. An Army Drill Team that tried to complete a blinfolded routine while being judged by a Navy Drill Officer. The Army failed the challenge, with a wry grin from the Navy Officer and a grimace from the Army Sargeant. You just knew those poor sods got beasted to hell and back when they returned to barracks!
@@Sn0wc4t There's a couple of times the producers tinkered with things. The one that most comes to mind was a BMX half pipe challenge. He was breezing through it so they asked him to make it look a bit harder. Stop and take a couple of breaks. Have a drink. Just don't make the last challenge of the series look too easy.
You bet was definitely my favourite Saturday night show along with Noels hous party when i was growing up, great time for tv in that era nothing compares these days.
I genuinely only remember Matthew Kelly hosting this, although the years Matthew was hosting was probably the era I was actually watching TV at the time as I was in college/Uni
Yea same for me. My memories of this show have always been the Matthew Kelly era and a bit of the Darren Day era. The Bruce Forsyth episodes are great though - definitely check them out!
Same here. I was looking through some old TV listings the other day from about 1989 and was surprised to see it mention You Bet presented by Bruce Forsyth. Not only didn't I not know it was originally presented by Bruce Forsyth but I didn't know it started in the late 80s, I only seem to remember it from about 94 onwards.
another thing I liked was that the music at the end of the challenge was different depending on if they where successful or not. If they passed it would play as normal. If they failed the last note would be out of tune. It was a nice touch
I remember the Brucey You Bet Rap he did at the end of each episode. Do you wanna bet on it? You bet! Well you’d betta get on it? You bet! So don’t fret, get set are you ready? You bet! Classic Forsyth.
an iconic challenge i remember fondly was a firebreather who had to use his firebreathing to burst 200 balloons in 2:00. hopefully the renewed series would be great to have back.
I really liked You Bet! I must admit though that my timeline was off slightly as like you I regarded the Matthew Kelly era as the shows peak but I thought it finished a few years later than it did, I don't think I even watched the Darren Day version :/
2:53 and 15:00 Dominic O'Brien gets everywhere and his was one of a few challenges done on both Wetten Dass and You Bet. Dominic was also on Noels House Party once for the Big Pork Pie segment where he admitted despite being a memory champion, he once forgot to pick up a friend from the airport. The dinner table truck over a ramp, and I'm assuming the candle flickering in front of a speaker, is another example of challenges being done on international versions.
I'd forgotten all about this! I spent most of the time these kinds of things were on watching sci-fi like the various Star Treks so a lot of these programmes passed me by. Can't say as I've seen any of the Brucey ones, but I do remember some of the Mathew Kelly episodes as I was a big fan of his back then, having grown up with him doing children's TV. I don't think I'd watch it now, especially if the back-stabber-in-chief is involved, I've lots more Tokusatsu to watch! It does go to show that these companies have run out of ideas if they're re-hashing old gameshows. Just a note on the lad who was paralysed on Wetten Dass?. The car that he failed to clear was actually driven by his dad, who was absolutely devastated, as you would be. Thankfully there was no bad blood. Saw that on one of Nick Crowley's darkest TV videos, well worth a watch!
Is it me, or did the people doing the memory challenges nearly always pass on one part and come back to it to up the tension? And I never knew Bruce Forsyth hosted You Bet, always thought it was Kelly and Day.
I am not expecting much from the two episode reboot sadly. A combination of the host (who I don't think connects with a live audience very well compared to other ITV hosts currently available) and modern day health & safety rules, will make this feel like a shadow of earlier runs.
True story : I lived in Germany around the same time period this was on, and they had their own Saturday early evening version of Youbet. One old guy came out and said if they lined up 100 (I think, it mightve been less, memory fuzzy) topless women, he could tell their bra sizes blindfolded by feel alone. (Nudity not a problem on dinner time family tv in Germany), he absolutely sucked at it, maybe got about 3 or 4 right by random chance. But got to the end, with a massive smile on his face said "best night of his life".. And the audience erupted in laughter. Not the sort of thing which would happen today, or ever in the uk... EDIT: Maybe i should watch video before posting? lol.. Apparently the German show was first.. lol.. Maybe I was watching the French version on German tv? Again, memory is fuzzy especially when it comes to languages.
Saturday night tv 80s and 90s was quality on BBC 1 and ITV. With You Bet Bruce Forsyth was the best but Matthew like Bruce was good too in his own way. And both had experience of gameshows. Was keen on Darren Day but would rather him than whoever takes over now
You Bet! was basically the UK version of the German TV institution that was Wetten Dass?! minus the big name musical performances and the odd appearance of an international A or B lister.
Haha! I didn't watch every episode for these, but almost every episode of what is currently available to find online. But generally yes, I will try to watch as much as possible of whatever I'm covering before writing the script and starting the editing. Hence why it takes me a while to get videos out sometimes!

At least it's not going to be hosted by the Walshes...

Yea that was so heartbreaking :( Unbelievable talent!

I think Matthew Kelly's jackets deaerve a documentary of their own.

Nothing beats 90s Saturday night TV. You Bet was definitely a favourite from ITV with Big Break my favourite on BBC 1.
Big Break has one of the best theme songs of any game show! I'll definitely be covering that on the channel in the future :)
Gosh I remember You Bet with Matthew Kelly and it was an awesome Saturday night viewing. The 1990s were a great time for it.
Absolutely. What a time to be alive!
Literal memory unlocked, I forgot about this show completely until I saw this video pop up on my feed :D
me too! I used to love this so much
Place your bets now!!!
My uncle worked for itv as an engineer for 40 years with them, he actually designed the system that collected the votes
That's awesome. I bet he's got some great stories of working there for such a long time!
I really miss Saturday night game shows like this. We just don't get shows like this anymore
Couldn't agree more. Glad to see You Bet returning though even if it is just for two episodes!
Met Matthew a few times in my job. A very friendly guy!
He was a convicted pedo sex offender you utter melt!
Non ce
I loved this show as a kid. Fantastic trip down memory lane
Thanks for watching :)
What a great show this was. One of the most memorable challenges was the guy who served an egg breakfast with a JCB. Incredible precision and skill.
I still revisit the, "you bet" uploads on TH-cam every now and then.

You Bet! will return to ITV this year.
Oh I remember You Bet. I was born in 84. I loved growing up in the 90s. We had the best TV shows ever.
Great memories of a time that can never be repeated
This guy doesn't miss 👏🏽 Another huge staple of my childhood weekends relived in incredible detail. Thank you!
You bet was definitely my favourite Saturday night show along with Noels hous party when i was growing up, great time for tv in that era nothing compares these days.
I had completely forgotten about Don’t Try This At Home! Great video!
Thanks for watching, glad you enjoyed!
I just hope the 2024 You Bet does not flop
I loved You Bet. Fond memories of watching this show. I never knew Bruce Forsyth was a presenter, but I agree that Matthew Kelly was great.
I loved Matthew Kelly on this show! Brucie was always fantastic but his return to the BBC was best for everyone.
Loved this show as a kid
I genuinely only remember Matthew Kelly hosting this, although the years Matthew was hosting was probably the era I was actually watching TV at the time as I was in college/Uni

I remember seeing the Matthew Kelly version but it wasn’t something I was massively into.
I remember the boy who could guess every car by its rear lights.
another thing I liked was that the music at the end of the challenge was different depending on if they where successful or not. If they passed it would play as normal. If they failed the last note would be out of tune. It was a nice touch
This was peak Saturday night and it's a show I wish they would bring back
It's coming back for 2 special episodes at the end of this year apparently!
Such great content... enjoy these videos mate 👍
Thanks a lot, glad you're enjoying the videos :)
I used to love watching this when I was a kid!
I didn't even know Brucey hosted it, and I grew up on this on Saturday nights with MK!
Now you need to cover Channel 4's Banzai!
...which was the zany low-budget Gen-X version of You Bet. And is a show that could never be made today.
Who remembers Brucy's little you bet rap? Do you you wanna bet on it? well you bet etc! Brucy was an absolute lege of UK entertainment
I really liked You Bet! I must admit though that my timeline was off slightly as like you I regarded the Matthew Kelly era as the shows peak but I thought it finished a few years later than it did, I don't think I even watched the Darren Day version :/

A quality show it sums up the best of 90s Saturday night tele Kelly was the best host the thing I always liked was the size of the staging and studio.
I miss this kind of reality telly. Now it's mostly eating creepy crawlies and seeing who can waft fake tears from their face the fastest.
Loved you bet and still watch the reruns nowdays . I know its coming back but knowing itv nowdays they will sadly ruin it .
You bet they will.
I was on YouBet in the 90’s. Had a fantastic time. 2 nights in the Heathrow Hilton. And I raised the grand sum of £6 for charity.
Wow! What was the challenge that you were undertaking on the show?
God I remember watching the reruns on Challenge TV
I'd forgotten all about this! I spent most of the time these kinds of things were on watching sci-fi like the various Star Treks so a lot of these programmes passed me by. As Bruce is a legend, Matthew was the best on this show , shame how things went wrong for him
Is it me, or did the people doing the memory challenges nearly always pass on one part and come back to it to up the tension?
And I never knew Bruce Forsyth hosted You Bet, always thought it was Kelly and Day.
He used to pretend to add up the scores himself at the end.
I fooking loved this programme 😍
Two special episodes as a kinda backdoor pilot perhaps? Would be cool.

weird i have no recollection of this show......... odd.... did it not get like replayed over the 90s? it feels like a show i would have loved. :(
Noel's House Party should still be running today!
Definitely! Not sure if Noel would be up for hosting it again but it would be great to see a similar show return!
"Dont try this at home" felt a bit risky to me at the time, after all those "noel" problems on bbc.
Saturday night tv 80s and 90s was quality on BBC 1 and ITV. With You Bet Bruce Forsyth was the best but Matthew like Bruce was good too in his own way. And both had experience of gameshows. Was keen on Darren Day but would rather him than whoever takes over now

@12:09.. It's NOT Barry 'Mckewen"... it's Barry McGuigan!!
Haha, I knew I had probably pronounced that name wrong! Thanks for the correction :)
You Bet! was basically the UK version of the German TV institution that was Wetten Dass?! minus the big name musical performances and the odd appearance of an international A or B lister.
@back in the day how about doing a look back and do a video on wipeout
Great idea for a video - it's on the list!
Ok
@officialbackintheday
Do a video on fun house uk
And of course let's not forget the Forfits.
Matthew took over from bruce. I'm Trying to remember the lyrics to the chant bruce made up.
Do you wanna bet on it? You bet! Well you'd betta get on it? You bet! So don't fret, get set are you ready? You Bet!
Also can you do Stars in their eyes
With different hosts
Including matthew kelly era.
Matthew kelly is you bet.
And also Their gonna be a reboot
When is the reboot supposed to air
It was originally announced as November 2024, but I have a feeling they'll be airing it around Christmas time.
@officialbackintheday cool thank you
I wonder what happened to Mathew Kelly
Willoughby and Mulhern? It’ll never work.
Urgh, Mulhern, the pile of sick left after the death of childrens TV.
How about a adult parody show called ‘You Bet Your Ass’?
this whole video is darren day.....?
Are you an AI? You always pronounce words like someone who has never heard the word they are saying before
and sometimes sounds both american and scottish mad!!!!!!
2 white presenters in 2024, i'm shocked if that ends up being true.
Kelly convicted no nce!
Some of these clips could do with some gamma correction.
AI Confirmed😅😅
Do you go back and watch every episode for these?! If so, that's very impressive and you should go on the next You Bet
