I'm so sad about all the mall closures. It was such a fun place to go with friends and a big part of the 90s-00s culture. So depressing 😞
Right? I remember this was one of my favorite places to go as a child back in the mid 2000's. The water fountain and the smell of Cinnabon by the entrance. I even remember there was an arcade at some point with an indoor go cart where bj's is located.
this Mall was the place to go during the 80's as a teenager, friday and saturday nights back then was so cool to go and hang out at.
I have fond 90’s memories of this place as well as Northgate and Forest Fair Mall. Tri county was awesome and had a great arcade. Eat at the food court and go upstairs to the arcade for Mortal Kombat 😎
Shillitos is pronounced Shill-eh-toes, not Shi-leet-ohs, so says me, a life long resident of Cincinnati
I figured I was pronouncing it wrong 😂
I was going to make this same comment. :)
And across the street, Swallens and behind that, Princeton Bowl. On the other side of Kemper, you had Cassenelli Square. Inside that was the BEST corn dog shop.
Back then, little old Springdale had 3 Cinemas.
Took me a moment to translate that name.
Malls are closing, yet they insist that turning them into outdoor malls will solve the problem. If people didn't want to come out in the winter to shop inside, why in the world would they come to shop outside?
Energy costs are much lower. This solution seems to be working in Edgewood, KY.
I really like this mall. It’s sad that malls are failing and closing up. I grew up in the 80’s-90’s and the mall was the place to be! I brought my sons to the mall in 05 and 07. Honestly with the economy, I can’t afford to shop at malls anymore.
I grew around near Kenwood Mall in Cincinnati. My grandma would drive us out to Tri County on Saturday mornings in the 90’s. It always felt like we were going out of town, I used to love it. The drive felt so long. We would shop all day at sears and Lazarus. She would let me pick out Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger outfits. Tri-County mall had a different selection than Kenwood mall. Not necessarily better but different and I enjoyed having clothes from “out of town” 😂 I used to like the Spencer store too. Great memories
i loved going into Gameswap, Suncoast, and FYE
This was my favorite mall back in the day, to bad its over
I was a kid when this mall first opened, the anchor stores were "SHILLITO'S, POGUES. and SEARS". I think what helped drive this fist mall into the ground was the fact that CINCINNATI went too far on mall construction. there was just too many malls in the area!!!!!
Kenwood mall seems to be the only old one that survived and prospered. Ultimately I think it has to do with aging neighborhoods and an outflux of wealth from the area. I mean, Mason/Liberty Township basically stole Costco from Tri-County leaving only Sams Club for residents around the Princeton school district.
UNICOMM Productions created an interesting series about the overmalling of Cincinnati. Many of the malls were not sustainable over the long haul.
I grew up in walking distance of this mall. Worked at Johnny Rockets when it opened back in '96. So many memories.
Such a shame when this happens. It looks to be in excellent condition. Thank you for the memories, GRM - good job👍🏼
Lots of memories of good times here with my family. Truly breaks my heart.
Yes Tri county Springdale was home to some cool stores in the 70's 80's 90's People from the area remember this once great mall and also neighboring stores across and up the street, Names like Steinbergs, Swallens, Circuit City, Rinks and others are now gone gone gone, RIP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Swallens was awesome! Owner sold it to someone, and they screwed all the employees, took their pensions and took off.
Finally, someone who confirms that life on earth didn't start in the 90's.
So many memories at this mall 90s and early 00s
We need the community and socialization malls brought. Badly.
That Shillito’s pronunciation. In talking about the Sears expansion, I don’t think most of the tenants you mentioned came along until well after the expansion. I don’t recall Circuit City, CompUSA, Borders Books, or Value City ever being in the mall. I’m pretty sure there was a Circuit City across the street, to the south. There was definitely a CompUSA across the street, to the West, when they left Forest Fair Mall. Borders was also across the street, to the West. Value City was, and still is, to the West of the mall, down Kemper.
your 2010 comment on curfew is a polite way of saying tri county and cincinnati mills mall suffered from "diversity" shift of urban wanting to enjoy suburban areas
I was there maybe once a week with my buddy once we were out of high school, like 2002. Game swap and Suncoast were where we were always at.
I remember when it was just a single story building.
i worked at comp-usa when in forest fair mall, then it moved to princeton pike, across from the tri county mall. it was never in or connected to tri county mall, just for the correction!
Gotcha! I’m not from the area, and I’m reliant on others info/history, thanks for the information!
I remember that Comp-USA. It went into the old Swallen’s building, and I remember Swallen’s as well. That was such a unique store. I would always go down to the lowest floor where they had a great speed shop.
I love the food at Mi Cozumel and hope they are able to stick around. Edit to add that I once got my tires replaced at Sears Auto there, so it must have been at least 20 years ago.
I used to work pretty close to this mall and would go on my lunch break just to get out of the office and stretch my legs. Within a year it went from pretty busy to completely dead. I used to go to the food court with coworkers for lunch and we had a ton of options to pick from. Those all went away. I quit going when the gamestop shut down.
I would go there in the 80s and 90s
Forest fair mall only mall truly miss
I used to love shopping at stores physically. Then they went to strip malls. Now online shopping takes over. Are people just becoming unsociable or lazy?
Yeah, unfortunately a lot of folks are.
I was last there a few years back and it looked like it was still doing alright(better than Northgate at least), so seeing this is a shock! I guess the effects of covid finally caught up to it. This has happened to basically all the malls around here. There is 1 that's still going strong though. It was one of the better malls around here so this is sad.
Shillito’s was pronounced “Shill’ a toes” but still great history, thanks ❤
Thank you! Was driving me crazy lol
The narrator's pronunciation is how my grandpa said Shillito's when he saw it on my grandma's credit card statement. They lived in St. Louis. I have such good memories of her visits.
😢 sad close it’s down difficult times
back in my middle school days we would go up to tri county and northgate and play hide n seek lol
Had my first heroin overdose near JCPenney In 2002!! Man I really loved shopping here
Crazy 6years ago my aunt and brother were working there now it’s nothing
We were originally there back in 2012 when we first moved here the mall was empty. There were reviews and people talking about how it was starting to become a bad area was why people don’t go there anymore liberty Center in my area opened up in 2015 put all the balls in the area out of business, unfortunately Amazon is now putting everybody out of business. When you look back at the malls were like back in the 80s, such as fast times at Ridgemont high people used to go to the mall all the time and it was a place to meet new people have a quick meal and go shopping fast-forward today. That’s not a thing anymore. Malls are a dying breed
Just like Cincinnati Mills 😕
My question is what happened? Why close after all these years?
Can you still go Inside? I'm surprised it's not locked up.
Doubt it. From what I’ve seen they put a big fence around the whole building.
I seriously doubt the proposed plans for this mall will ever come about. My guess it’ll be bulldozed and warehouses will go in.
This is such a shame. My & my boys favorite hang out spot.....just gone😢
I would always go here to go to macy's. 😢 i hope they never close Florence mall
Is Game Swap still in there? I remember going in there all the time and getting bags and bags of video games. I had no idea this mall died but I also haven't been in there for a few years
Surprisingly it still looks just as good as Kenwood. Kenwood has Apple and a few other high end retailers. I do think however the rich people who live near don’t really shop at Kenwood. Kenwood feels small and cramped compared to this mall. Just too many places to shop and they all can’t survive. This area also lost Costco. Just a bad part of town really and no money to support a place like this…
Good video. Quick question how do you find all these infomation??
Usually, it’s a mix of sources depending on the location. Normally there are historical websites, and archives for the city in which the mall is located in. But if that doesn’t help, they usually have a decently sized Wikipedia page, along with a list local and national news stations that report on certain things pertaining to the subject.
All of these malls are closing because retail has moved online. These companies should turn them into retirement communities. Plenty of apartments and shopping plus entertainment.
i knew i went to a mall with a rollercoaster in it im not crazy lmao nobody i ask even my parents who are the ones who took me remember that this must have been it and thats why no one else remembers because it wasn't there very long lmao
My mom used to bring me to Krazy City to play every once in a while, but it was gone so quickly. I also remember that SEARS, and how utterly huge it was, especially being a child at the time. The Ruby Tuesdays on the side was one of my favorite places to eat back then. For the longest time, the place has been limping along with Spirit Halloween and the couple restaurants that still hung around. Shame to see it closed, but not a suprise in the slightest. I hope we see a little bit of interest from urban explorers once it's really shuttered.
They’re still watering the plants though, so thats nice.
Damn this is insane
Tell me why they closing this one but bringing back eastgate💀
What about Kenwood Shopping mall would that be next.
Little better area there. Last time I was there, it was doing ok. You’ve got Madeira, Montgomery, kenwood, Indian hill and blue ash around there. Lot more snooty nickle millionaires in those areas.
Covid not only took away lives. It brought about the end for this place.. 😢. Trump baka baka baka.. lost our 24 walmarts too
Hmm are the analyst sure the curfew contributed to the downfall? Not the incidents that caused a curfew to be put into place?
I miss the good old days 15 years old getting stoned and eating a bunch of triple cs
The mall was not enclosed till the 1980s
Raise your hand if the first place you stopped was Spencer Gifts
Borders Books was across the street, not in the mall.
Shillitos pronounced shill-a-toes
Good by history
just an "FYI" LAZURUS was MR. SHILLITOE'S fist name. my dad's parents knew MR/MRS SHILLITO personally. my dads brother would always get a ride in MRS SHILLOTO'S electric car!!!!.
Haitians will be living in there soon.
Stuff cost to much !! Shop there you being robbed
