I remember watching a live concert of music from NieR. There was a giant screen with footage from the game, and there were all the musicians and the singers, and Emi Evans of course. And then there was that funny little guy, the conferencier. Hosting the show, saying a couple words about each song. A short chubby guy, very charming, but very unobtrusive. Very softspoken and humble. Subservient, even. Kept bowing and thanking the audience all the time. And it was never a simple arigatou. It was always a full-fledged "hontou ni arigatou gozaimashita", you know. Every single time. With a bow. I bought the CD collection. Sometimes at night I would sit at the piano and play Shadowlord by ear. Grandma. Kainé. Emil. Snow in Summer. Occasionally I would arrange them for two violins to play in duet with my violin teacher. Then NieR:Automata came out and I bought a PS4 just to play it. Just the one game. I paid almost 400 Euro to play just one game. I wish I had paid more. The game that broke my heart and crushed my soul. And then and only then, after all that, months later even, one fine day it finally occurred to me to google the composer's name. As in, I knew what the name was. I long knew it by heart, needless to say. But I had never actually looked him up. What else he had worked on, where he was from, what he looked like. So I googled "Keiichi Okabe". And my jaw dropped. Smiling at me from the screen was that funny little guy. That humble conferencier who at the concert had acted like a complete nobody and kept apologizing to the audience for wasting their time with his presence. It had been him all along. The composer himself. What understatement. What a gentleman. What a mensch. I am at a loss for words even still now. Mr Okabe, I know you will never read this, but I love you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for everything.
Man your words are unique, and yeah Nier Automata gave us something that no body will get it tell they try it, and it remain to our hearts yet the music is something, Because of the wonderful Composer. 😍. You didn't waste your money on PS4 try Death stranding and some unique games you won't regret it. ☺️
Key ingredient: Platinum games and Square Enix money. Drakengard through Nier:Gestaltlicant were not masterpieces. It took all the back-end skill at Platinum and the financial clout of SE to truly weaponize Taro/Okabetism.
Even to this day i still believe videogames music is heavily underrated but more than anything Japanese composers, they've been killing it through the years yet it feels like they don't get the appreciation they truly deserve. I think what makes the Toco toco series captivating is not only the people being interview in it, but also the subtle and non-intrusive editing.
@Bara Tulska That's classic Yoko Taro bait and switch. He hooks you with something and stabs you in the heart with another. Drakengard: Classic fantasy with badass and heroic dragon riders that fight for justice ? Nope ! Meet a bunch of psychopatic murderers as they mow their ennemies with glee using justice as a pretense. NieR: A dad/brother goes on a quest to save his sickly daughter/sister while teaming up with a skimpy lady in revealing underwear ? Nope ! Meet a desperate dad going through madness as he goes on a quest that will ultimately destroy the human race while teaming up with a hermaphrodite girl that wears sexy underwear as clothes to show that she accepts her body as it is. Automata: An android with a sexy body and her cute sidekick will save the human race from extinction by defeating the evil aliens ? Nope ! Turns out the aliens are dead. The humans are dead. So you follow androids on a tragic quest for purpose in life. One finds love. One finds hate. One finds redemption. All the while teaching you through sidequests that letting other people or abstract concepts dictate what your purpose in life is will only lead to your own destruction as an individual. EDIT: I nearly didn't buy NieR:Automata because of the sexualisation. I was anti-baited. This would have been one of the biggest mistakes of my life as this game changed me.
English and French subtitles are available under the “CC” menu. Portuguese, Russian and Spanish subtitles have also been made available through Community Contributions, which are also open for additional language submissions. Thank you for following Archipel!
Brilliant composers don't get enough credit when they're 70% responsible of the magic. Keiichi Okabe, Yoko Kanno, Masashi Hamauzu, Joe Hisaishi, Hans Zimmer and countless others make gaming and watching movies an experience worth remembering for centuries and beyond. Thank you for showcasing such remarkable artists through your channel
Exactly the same feelings i've had about this! This man is a wonderful creator AND artist and definetely deserves the most appreciation for what he's done in musical medium.
Humble and beautiful person. He doesn't consider himself an artist and I agree. Mr. Okabe, you are a GREAT artist for giving us the best videogame soundtrack ever.
Really sad to hear that this will be the final episode of toco toco. It was quite a journey and some of my favorite artists and developers were shown so i'm very thankful. You guys showed the way of how to make documentaries with the proper respect to both the creators you documented as well as your viewers. Your cinematography and editing skills are unparalled in youtube yet they were always applied with moderation and subtlety. I wish the best to you in whatever you do next. :)
NieR:Automata had a big impact on me. It sparked a chain of events that not only led to irl changes, but also to changes in myself. Okabe's work on the soundtrack played a big role in this. The soundtracks from both NieRs will forever be etched in my being, and I am thankfull for that.
Yeah it really is one of the best soundtracks ever. My other favorites are probably Dragon Age: Inquisition’s soundtrack, Detroit: Become Human, Assassin’s Creed 2 and Final Fantasy VII Remake. Go video game music!
This was very informative, thank you ! The fact that the Automata OST was only composed of layers that needed to be re-assembled in order to make real tracks for the CD release speaks a lot of those people's dedication to making video game music, and not music that happens to be in a video game. It reminds me of what Mick Gordon did with the DOOM (2016) soundtrack. That's why listening to those tracks without playing the game feels weird to me. They are good on their own, but its truly how they are used in the medium they were created for that elevates them to greatness.
Keiichi Okabe, if there's the slightest chance of you or someone from Monaca or even Emi Evans reading this, know that I dream, every single day, of having the privilege to work alongside you and your crew for creating masterful compositions for my stories. Keep up doing what you do best, because somewhere in the opposite side of the globe, there's someone who roots and thinks dearly of your work. NieR:Automata has the best videogame soundtrack I've listened in my entire life. I can't thank you enough for this. (I even figure you and Ryuichi Sakamoto working together [with me, who knows], since I also know you're a huge fan of him, as much as I am hahahahaha)
What a beautiful channel you've got here. No ads, wonderful content, so elegantly done and with a lot of passion. I loved this channel from the first time. Thanks for all your incredible effort. 💜💜💜
Unlike for a lot of other professions, life is meaningful for a composer because their masterpiece will be alive for generations. Nier automata’s music is such an example, and Okabe achieved the ultimate award - the meaning of life that transcends everything.
Thank you for all the passion and love you all have shared with us over the years. Another splendid video as always and a wonderful finale. Looking forward to what's next!
Thank you so much for this insightful look into his creative process. I played Nier over 5 years ago but it's story and music has affected me in a way no other game has.
THANK YOU! Amazing episode, I'm always very grateful to see these interviews. I would love to see Shoji Meguro or someone from the Atlus Sound team on the show as well someday! Edit: I guess this is the last episode of Toco Toco, but I fully support the content you all have been sharing with us
Thank you Archipel for your hard work and your involvement in creating videos on behalf of various artistic fields in these new media. It was really interesting to hear their doubts and waverings as well as your focus on form and editing. A real pleasure to follow all your artsy interviews/documentaries. Glory.
That was a fantastic way to end the series and on such a high note, ive really enjoyed them all an i appreciate all the hard work that gone into creating it, thank you!
Keiichi "B.K.O." Okabe, before known for the Nier series, he played a pivotal part to the Namco Sound Team in the mid to late 90s. Ace Driver Victory Lap, Air Combat 22, Tekken 3 (both Arcade and PlayStation versions), Tekken Tag Tournament (both Arcade and PlayStation 2 versions), Xevious 3D/G+ (PlayStation version), Alpine Surfer, Dancing Eyes, just to name a few what he did.
This was beautiful. Okabe-san is such an amazing individual, even though he feels that his music complements an existing body I feel like he doesn't understand how his work was so important for all of the series he's worked with. Now I understand why Yoko Taro loves him so much, because he definetely understands
This was really in depth and beautiful to see the process and hear about how he entered the industry. It's always humbling listening to people's beginnings. Btw Yusuke Nakamura who's an illustrator and drew a lot of Asian Kung fu Generation's album would make a great video! His art is also very unique.
This was bittersweet. I really related to this episode of toco toco since I'm an up-and-coming game music composer myself but I'm also sad that this is the finale of the series. Thank you for this incredibly well-produced series and good luck for your next venture.
Thank you so much for this and all of the other interviews. It shares so many essentials aspects not only of a specific work craft, but to life as a whole. Never have I ever seen a series, as dedicated as toco toco, to give this emphasis to the, well deserved, great Japanese creators/artists. Well done, Archipel!
It must have felt like a journey coming to an end for you, guys. It sure seemed like this was a conclusion, but nevertheless a satisfying one. Thank you for introducing us to the amazing view you gave to japanese culture to all of us fans of the channel. I will continue to support in any way I can the content you provide us i nthe future to come. Thank you! Muito Obrigado!
It is the end of a journey indeed, but Archipel continues. As always we're very thankful for all your contributions, thank you again for your support! Obrigado!
I didn't know that this was the final episode until the very end, and it hit me hard! These videos have been beautiful, the best in their class, and I can't wait to see what Archipel does next.
I knew Keichii Okabe first from anime called "Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero" and i really love his song and then i knew Nier from Keichii Okabe too And then i know the awesome people who work with him like Keigo Hoashi and Emi Evans especially Emi's chaos Language I can't wait to see the Nier Replicant come out and the next series of Yuuki Yuuna "Nogi Wakaba is a Hero" animated
Really loved the toco toco series for showing us hidden parts of people, their work and the cities they live in. So intimate and interesting, never intrusive. Can't wait to see what's next from Archipel.
Thanks for this!!!! A lot!! My dear friend is so dissapointed, she dont pass a very important music exam... But i hope this can motivate her in her next try. Thanks!! My. Okabe made my favourite gaming OST of all time
Thank you so much!! It's fascinating to listen to their interviews. To know the inside of the industry, and the mind of the creators and artists. And the atmosphere of the documentary is so calm and beautiful!!
Thank you for that video. You did not only interview Yoko Taro, but also Keiichi Okabe, what means a lot to me. There are many interesting people in the world, but you're channel helps us to not only get interviews, but also an closer look at the people themselfs. I always wonder, how the people are, that made the works I get inspired by and touched by the most. It's a bit sad, that this series ends, but I am looking forward to next next content of this channel!
This was a truly fascinating and touching interview (or monologue). One thing that hit me is that during this whole 38 minutes Keiichi Okabe did not mention that he actually loves/likes what he is currently doing or that he is proud/happy of the reception that his music got. Thinking how beautiful his music is to me, it makes me a bit sad that the creator himself doesn't share the same feeling for his own creations.
Le dernier toco toco... Je suis la série depuis Nolife. Bonne route Anne.
I'm so happy I got to see Toco toco unfold throughout all those years. What a beautiful series and a beautiful conclusion. I'm sad to see it end, but I'm excited for what's to come. Toco toco will always hold a special place in my heart.
Thank you, Archipel! Thank you all very much for the toco toco series! Amazing videos, excellent production and editing! I think that every viewer can see that these videos come straight from the heart. I truly look forward to what comes next, please keep doing what you are doing and don't give up!

God protect Keiichi he is legend with his team. 🙏🙏 Can't wait for the announced Nier.

Yoko Taro + Keiichi Okabe = Epic masterpiece
Key ingredient: Platinum games and Square Enix money. Drakengard through Nier:Gestaltlicant were not masterpieces. It took all the back-end skill at Platinum and the financial clout of SE to truly weaponize Taro/Okabetism.
Taro and Okabe are just like Yoshi. P and Soken to me!
Epic win
Absolutely
Keiichi Okabe to Yoko Taro was what John Williams was to Steven Spielberg

@@arenkai how's Automata changed you man? And don't talk about the other games i'm trying to evading the spoilers hehe.
Between Nier soundtracks and Persona soundtracks, I could go my entire life just listening to those alone.
Lmao I love your desc of Drakengard.
English and French subtitles are available under the “CC” menu. Portuguese, Russian and Spanish subtitles have also been made available through Community Contributions, which are also open for additional language submissions. Thank you for following Archipel!
Archipel please interview with takahiro oba mangaka
spanish pleeaseeeeeee
Thank you for the french subtitles !
This was an amazing series!, Kinda sad to see it end, but thank you for bringing this gorgeous documentaries
Thank you very much for the French subtitles, you're awesome!
Yoko Taro: "The tracks not made by Okabe are usually good."
Okabe: "Shut up"
I love these 2
and yet they still work together :D
i love them relationship
"However, the ones made by him are incredible"
Reminds me of Weiss and Kaine
Taro is such a troll you can't help but love him 😅
Brilliant composers don't get enough credit when they're 70% responsible of the magic. Keiichi Okabe, Yoko Kanno, Masashi Hamauzu, Joe Hisaishi, Hans Zimmer and countless others make gaming and watching movies an experience worth remembering for centuries and beyond.

Exactly the same feelings i've had about this! This man is a wonderful creator AND artist and definetely deserves the most appreciation for what he's done in musical medium.
You forgot about poor Hoashi Keigo who composed like half of Automata OST ^^
Im glad you mentioned Masashi Hamauzu~
You need to add in yuki kajiura san also
Keiichi Okabe and Hiroyuki Sawano are legends for me
38 minutes.. Thank you , thank you so much for the toco toco series as well. It was amazing!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the finale.
Humble and beautiful person.
He doesn't consider himself an artist and I agree.
Mr. Okabe, you are a GREAT artist for giving us the best videogame soundtrack ever.
OH MY GOD the composer of Drakengard 3 and the NieR games I'm in heaven! Thank you so much for your hard work! This made my day.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed.

This was the first toco toco video I watched :(
NieR:Automata had a big impact on me. It sparked a chain of events that not only led to irl changes, but also to changes in myself. Okabe's work on the soundtrack played a big role in this. The soundtracks from both NieRs will forever be etched in my being, and I am thankfull for that.
I would be interested to hear how it changed you.
Me too
@@Chapperino Same here.
The friendship between Okabe and Taro reminds me of ONE and Yusuke Murata.
They're just bros making great things!
Keiichi Okabe‘s works are the greatest achievements in game soundtracks next to Otani‘s Score for Shadow of the Colossus ❤️
I agree
I like the music in destiny.
Yeah it really is one of the best soundtracks ever. My other favorites are probably Dragon Age: Inquisition’s soundtrack, Detroit: Become Human, Assassin’s Creed 2 and Final Fantasy VII Remake. Go video game music!

Nier automata is one of the few games where i dont listen to my spotify playlist while playing because its sooo beautiful
the best music composer since 100+ years
He is a GENIUS、天才。
Ah yes, Keichi Okabe, guy that made me play piano and start dreaming about becoming composer myself
Thank you. He is a very wise and peaceful man, I hope to listen to more of his works for the many years to come...
Thanks for watching!

The best sountrack of this videogames gen.
Amazing documentary! My favorite game music composer by far. I really loved this video
Thank you!
Nier:Automata is such a master class in audio design being part of a cohesive aesthetic.
I'm going to miss toco toco. Thank you for the series.
Thanks for following the series!
One of the greatest OST ever written for an outstanding game. Thank you for bringing it to life for us.
Thank you, Keiichi Okabe and Yoko Taro.
26:26 this really is the best view/scene in Nier Automata
Merci beaucoup.

Thanks for the french subtitles. If it's about Nier, I have to watch it.

This one brings out a smile to my face and a tear to my eyes for how amazing it is, just like Keiichi Okabe's works.
Thanks for the kind word!
I wish to create amazing tracks like Mr. Okabe one day, know that you are one of my main inspirations for composition ;-;
How did it go?
This was bittersweet. I really related to this episode of toco toco since I'm an up-and-coming game music composer myself but I'm also sad that this is the finale of the series. Thank you for this incredibly well-produced series and good luck for your next venture.

You've done an amazing job with this series ! Thank you !

Superb documentary. The creator of two of the best BSO ever made.
Thank you.

Thanks for this!!!! A lot!!
My dear friend is so dissapointed, she dont pass a very important music exam... But i hope this can motivate her in her next try. Thanks!! My. Okabe made my favourite gaming OST of all time
Thanks & we wish the best of luck to your friend!
Ahh I'm going to miss Toco Toco, this was an absolutely delightful show! Thank you so much for making all these great videos!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the series!
Thank you so much!! It's fascinating to listen to their interviews. To know the inside of the industry, and the mind of the creators and artists. And the atmosphere of the documentary is so calm and beautiful!!
Thank you!
Merci!
I'm grateful this exists. Thank you
Thank you for that video.
Thanks for the kind word!
Thank you for this entire series. Sad that it has come to an end but I'm very glad I got to experience it. Wish you luck moving forward.
Thanks for the support!
Excellent documentary! This was such a joy to watch. Looking forward to what 's coming next ☺
Thanks for the support!
Really happy you guys got interview him, and yoko taro.
Well to be truly honest, we are really happy we got to interview them too :)
Brilliant documentary. I absolutely adore this guy's music.
Thank you, glad you liked it!
This was really wonderful to watch. I enjoy the Nier OSTs even today. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed!
I really love fortress of lies - the ambience is so otherworldly
Merci beaucoup!
Okabe's music is what sold me Automata when I've heard it in a trailer
We have this man to thank for the eye shattering amounts of tears the game induced with its tone and weight
Saw the title..

I'm so happy I got to see Toco toco unfold throughout all those years. What a beautiful series and a beautiful conclusion. I'm sad to see it end, but I'm excited for what's to come.
Toco toco will always hold a special place in my heart.
Thank you!
only one comment... you made an ART of MASTERPIECE Thank you
i know this will probably never happen but imagine kentaro miura as a guest in this series
Well, it will never happen as part of toco toco, but maybe someday in another format...
@@ArchipelDocumentaries i hope so,toco toco was a great series, thanks for the great content
A imersão desse jogo é incrível.
Thank you, Archipel! Thank you all very much for the toco toco series! Amazing videos, excellent production and editing! I think that every viewer can see that these videos come straight from the heart. I truly look forward to what comes next, please keep doing what you are doing and don't give up!
Thank you for the kind word and for the support!
