Uterine Fibroid Embolisation v Myomectomy - Differences

  • In this video, I'm going to explain the differences between uterine fibroid embolisation (UFE) and myomectomy. UFE is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a catheter to remove the fibroid. Myomectomy is a more invasive procedure that involves removing the myometrium ( the layer of tissue that covers the uterus). I hope this video has helped you to make a better decision about which procedure to choose.

But, there are studies that show long-term risk of developing uterine cancer or sarcoma after undergoing UFE.
And how can that material not travel to the uterine body?

My apologies originally posted in the wrong place but the latter still applies.
I’m happy there is more information out on fibroids now and we have gone past somewhat , hysterectomy being the option. I still find that things are still one track because now it’s Myomectomy.
I have been researching Uterine fibroid embolization but I will like to have a child and I am in my late 30’s so fertility will play a big part in the decision making process.
So Myomectomy seems to be the best option.
Thanks for being one of the few who provides information on the different options available. It is greatly appreciated.

      Thanks for your kind wishes.
Yes, myomectomy does seem to be the most effective to date. It's important to start trying for a baby as soon as you recover from the myomectomy so you can get pregnant quickly (as fibroids may come back after a while).

My doctor was pushing surgery and at the end of the appointment barely mentioned embolization as an option, when i was worried and asking if it might be cancerous they didn't seem worried and said it was rare and not a big concern, they also never brought up testing it after surgery if that was the option I chose. But when I called them back and said I would like to explore embolization they are now very suddenly worried about me having the embolization because suddenly it might be cancer? I feel like I'm getting mixed signals and no one is really helping me understand anything and I'm so tired of it. Now I'm scared of doing an embolization

I’ve had embolization and myomectomy, get a myomectomy, embolization can destroy your uterine lining because of scar tissue and a lack of blood flow

@melangelozza, thank you. Which one did you do first, myomectomy or embolization? And was it laparscopic or abdominal myomectomy?

@@meaghans4591hi how are you feeling today. I was thinking about embolization instead of abdominal myomectomy but I'm hesitant because I want preserve my fertility and don't know the long term risks with ufe.

Good morning ma. I like your video. I really like this method of UFE, but my problem is I don't know if Nigeria has gotten this method. Can you recommend me of what I will do, because I want to remove this fibroid that's in me. Help me ma

Thank you for your comment and for watching my video. I'm sorry to hear about your fibroids, and I would recommend consulting with a medical professional to find out what options are available to you in Nigeria. The teaching hospital in your state would be the first place to start or nearby states.
