These cars are simply outstanding. My last 3 cars have all been the ES. The first two were not hybrid. I put 200,000 miles on each of them before selling to a friend and a relative. The one I drive now is the hybrid. It is now 5 years old, and has 84,000 miles on it. Since buying the car I have averaged 34.6 MPG. Have never done anything to any of my 3 ESs, except routine maintenance, tires, and 1 brake job on each of the first 2. Am still on the original brakes on my hybrid model. These cars are very comfortable....Moreover, these cars are RELIABLE.
Michael Romines I’m on my first ES, a 2013 ES350. Bought last April at 30,009 miles. It was a trade in to a local Volvo dealership as part of a 2 car trade in deal. (Why anyone would trade in a Lexus IS beyond me). I don’t drive more than 6-8 k miles/yr and sure enough I just turned 36k miles. This is car is flawless, solid like a tank and quiet like a vault. I have done nothing to it yet except rotate the tires and replace 1 tire Pressure sensor. My only complaint is the rear seats don’t fold down. I have 4 1/2 years left on my used car loan, this baby will last me 10+ years! In ECO mode and highway cruising I can easily hit 40 mpg (my dash graph shows it).
Alex does such a great job of reviewing vehicles - the best in my opinion. Its just too bad he doesn't consider reliability of the brand or model because there is NO way you can compare a Kia Cadenza to a Lexus ES. After all, when all is said and done the vehicle's primary purpose is transportation and if it isn't reliable that defeats the whole purpose.
Hybrid fan here, stretched for this car a yer ago, after 9000 miles great decision! Top off my tank for accurate mileage, low to mid 30's around town, high 30's to low 40's EZ freeway driving (60-65 MPH). I like not having to go to the pump as often, even with Lexus sneaking in a smaller gas tank (13 vs 16 gallons) for hybrid vs gas only, get another 100 miles/tank range, high 400 vs high 300.
@@normt5463 Depends. I got 47 MPG on my 2016 camry hybrid going from NYC to Long island driving on the parkway last night (has epa rating of 40 highway). And I was going 75-80mph on the parkway. If i had the new 2018 camry (supposedly gets EPA 50mpg highway), Id expect to be getting 60MPG going so fast.
Norm T idk why you're complaining for. All hybrids have different packages for different climates. You think if I live in Arizona I'm gonna care about heated seats?? Hell noooooo.
Wow this thing is beautiful, I always loved Big sedans, owned a 2011 Chrysler 300, 2014 Cadillac XTS, 2017 Toyota Avalon, man this thing is next on my list especially with that gas mileage!
Test drove this tonight. Current CMax Hybrid owner averaging 46mpg mixed driving Uber/Lyft. Seriously was impressed although I don't consider myself a large sedan guy. The Lexus rode very nice and was surprisingly peppy in sport mode. I was impressed .Great review.
I have the 2016 ES300H. Love the car. Looked at trading up to the same model 2019. Saw the weird dash with those funky knobs sticking out of the dash. My first impression was that they built the car and forgot to integrate the buttons so they attached them as an afterthought. Walked out of the dealership with my 2016.
What a lame reason to pull out. Reminds if a guy who wanted an IS but the no sunglass holder was a "deal breaker". And to think you both have the same vote as I do.
The fact that Lexus makes their Safety 2.0 standard is really valuable to me; it tells me they have confidence that it will work and that the safety system is not an afterthought.
KOLT They do it as a marketing strategy. Safety is a top concern for most new car buyers at all price ranges, and buyers like not having to buy top trim levels in order to get all available safety components. There’s no reason to think that safety systems from manufacturers that choose to make them optional would work any less well because they don’t offer them on all trims. For example, the 3rd gen EyeSight system from Subaru is the same last year as it is this year, even though that for this year, Subaru makes it standard on all trims.
Great Job Alex, thank you for talking about the advantages of Nimh batteries, most other reviewers don't know anything about things like that. You should also mention the advantages of port injection / combined injection (both port and direct combined) vs direct injection, that's another huge advantage of the Lexus. Direct injection engines (all competitors use them) suffer from internal carbon build up due to their design and when they get older that causes extremely expensive problems. Their injectors are fragile and expensive too. Plus their emissions are much more harmful to humans.
I'm probably hypercritical when it comes to reviews. Alex is slowly becoming my favorite reviewer. Factual, even keeled, and devoid of none sense! Well done sir!
Fantastic fuel economy for such a large, comfortable automobile, even better than my 2014 Toyota Avalon Hybrid Limited, which averages 43 mpg in mixed driving. As always, awesome review Alex, nobody else provides the same level of detail and accuracy.
Great review! I have a 2013 300h and I find it has everything I need, including power when you need it, you don't compromise on anything when buying this Gen 6/ Gen7 ES. If you want a hybrid or just great gas mileage and don't want to compromise, this is it, which includes the LEXUS reliability and drive. Yes, its a relaxed drive, but yes its a fantastic drive.
We have one, even at $80k it is the most luxerious car to buy at this pricepoint. No bmw/audi/mercedes at this level has these kind of backseat controls. Add the reliability and laid back image of Lexus and you have one perfect daily car.
As exorbitant as the price might seem to US residentens, the car prices in Europe are insanely high. For example, a RC-F is $171k here. The LS 600 $223k
In Sweden we have 10 years warranty on the car. It's the only car you can drive in the north. It is extremely cheap to own and run. That you get a luxury car too, they do absolutely nothing! I love it!
Another stellar review, Alex! After owning a Lexus ES-300 for 20 years of comfortable, trouble-free driving, I ordered its cousin: a 2019 Toyota Avalon Limited Hybrid. In my opinion, compared to the 2019 ES 300, the 2019 Avalon has a more luxurious interior (the available Cognac leather trim is absolutely stunning,) a more logical and easier to navigate infotainment system, and fold-down rear seats, to name a few differences. And the Avalon’s hybrid versions are only $1,000 more than their non-hybrid counterparts. However, most would argue (as does Alex) that the Avalon's grill is rather polarizing than the Lexus's. But beyond that, I believe the Avalon is a solid alternative to the ES 399 for those seeking a luxury sedan without a luxury logo.
Jerry M, Thanks for the report. I also view the new hybrids as very logical successors to the older generation of V6 Avalon, Camry and ES. Today's hybrids have comparable performance and nearly double the mpg. Please get back to us in 20 years to let us know how your new Avalon worked out. Happy trails ;)
You should check the Crown which is the Avalon version in Japan they got the improved grill. I drive an Avalon Hybrid that I bought used awesome car I get 40 mpg and it is quiet I wish it had the new info system but the car is great. Hopefully it will never die I do get a lot of bumpy roads out here in Dallas tho.
I have Lexus ES 350 and I love that car! Mine is a 2010, and I am the second owner. I will buy the 2019 in 2021 or 2022, when the initial price hit is mostly done on it. Did the same with my current car and meant to trade it by 2015 - but nothing ever goes wrong with it! Nothing! It is just making itself really hard to trade in....
Lol. Same with my then 2006 Toyota Sienna. 330k and was really hard to sell it. Like you I didn't replace a single light bulb. Lol. Aside from the usual maintenance 160k water pump only because I insisted, spark plugs, etc it was bullet proof.
Very nice and informative review on that +Lexus ES. I was hesitant on whether to buy a +LexusIS300h or considering this ES300h. Now +AlexOnAuto made me see clear and I am definitely set my sights on that Lexus ES300h.
imo this and the Avalon are the true inheritors of the oldschool luxury crown. big, soft and comfortable, but now with 40+ mpg instead of the 4 you got from the 70s boats.
Holy smokes 44mpg is great but what's that paint color called? It is a stunning color. This is a great job on the ES. The huge grille, which I really don't like, looks good on this ES.
I wonder if the stiff ride has to do with the lateral performance dampers and skinny 45 tire sidewalls? I wonder if the Avalon on 17" wheels and softer tuned suspension rides better?
The tires, maybe. The lateral performance dampers, no. They're not suspension stiffeners, they're actually shock absorbers bolted to the front and back of the frame. They only make the car quieter and smoother.
Unpopular opinion Lexus’ interior design language that started on the IS and RC and moved into the NX and LS500 and now the ES is by far my favourite interior design language on any car The new one they started with the 2022 NX disappointed me because it didn’t have the layered dash which I love so much
I actually drove Lexus ES Hybrid from Bellevue to Gig Harbor round trip in Washington State. And got average of not 44 MPG, but 49.3 MPG. This trip included heavy traffic jam of Tacoma area both ways.
Did you calculate the MPG yourself or just look at what the car calculated. The MPG the car shows is just an estimate. The actual MPG is less. If it said 49.3 it's probably more like 47-47.5mpg which is still great I hope I get that when mine is delivered in February.
Does it have Android auto and I wish they have Garmin navigation intergated and wireless charging and auto windows roll up when close the car with alarm system.
My father is businessman. He like good fuel economy van. I like fast car, suv or van because it is thrilling to drive. Now i like more good fuel economy vehicle when gas prices are higher and higher.
The analog clock in the car appears to be out of place with the interior design. The clock is in other locations and just appears to be extraneous. I think I'd remove it and integrate that space into the screen design. Thoughts?
Thank you for the great content. I have a 2019 ES 300h (my first Lexus Hybrid - coming from a Honda Hybrid). There is a loud noise coming from the brake booster pump every time I open the drivers seat or occasionally while driving and pressing the brakes. I have wrapped it with sound deadening (heat proof) material since sometimes it is extremely loud. Maybe that's the way it's supposed to function? Funny how I didn't notice that during the test drive and what might be loud for me might not be noticeable to others. Perhaps it's because the car is so quiet that you hear everything (kinda ironic). Thank you!
I just bought one of these used and it is truly remarkable vehicle. I plan to take care of it well, but the build quality is outstanding and I know it will stand the test of time. Also, if you're considering a new Camry Hybrid or Prius, you might consider a used ES300h. They are WAY more comfortable and the quality is truly next level compared to Toyota.
With the battery under the rear seat, I don't understand why Lexus doesn't design the seat backs to fold down. My best friend owns an ES and he's always needing to borrow my truck to pick up stuff at Lowe's!
12:55 that's what she said... Keep up the great reviews, Alex. Can't wait to make my own review when we get these on the lot late this summer. I noticed it has the same door handles as the LC and the LS...ballin'
I like this grill better than the 2019 Avalon Hybrid. No one can top your through reviews. I’m neutral on the interior knobs. I wonder if this is worth the extra money vs the 2019 Avalon Hybrid?
I have a supercharged mustang GT as my daily but I’m looking for a good comfortable daily and I think I’m going to go with a Lexus. What are the best Lexus cars between $30,000 -$50,000????
Great review as usual. I agree the 'bolts' are odd looking. I drive the current ES hybrid and it has been absolutely stellar with no issues. I average around 40-41 mpg in mixed driving which always amazes me for a vehicle this size. While I would consider this newer version when I go to replace it in a few years, it seems I'd give up very little by simply going with the Avalon Hybrid.
Such a shame about the lack of rear head room - I'm a limo driver, so this is important. Unfortunately we're *only* getting the hybrid here in Australia. ☹️
Looking at the Avalon head room specs on Edmunds.com (ES not available yet), it's interesting to note that the base model hybrid has exactly the same rear head room as the base model petrol - 37.9". However, the higher spec hybrid models do lose more rear head room than the petrol counterparts - 37.1 and 37.5" respectively. I suspect that it's the seat heating & ventilation that causes the loss of head room (i.e - the seats are simply thicker), but why does the hybrid lose 0.4" more space, when the base model is identical? Put another away - I wonder why they were able to make the base models have identical rear head room, but not the upper spec models? Seems strange.
Lexus seems to be going backwards on headroom. In my wife's Lexus IS350 convertible I can fit comfortably in the back seat without touching my head. I'm 5.10. Recently I tried with much effort to wedge myself in the back of the 2018 RC two door sports coupe and managed to get back there. It was an exercise in yoga to get in and especially get out. Hopped into the NX and while roofline directly over my head was fine if I moved my head just a quarter of an inch to the side it would touch the curve of the roofline. Not good over bumps. To me Lexus seems to have different design departments and there is no cohesive single entity that signs off on all the Lexus vehicles. Who ok'd the second row entrance into the huge Lexus GX 460? That's a joke. The "third row" seats in the RX350L. Also those second row seat don't lay down flat but they DO in the regular RX350. The side bolsters in the driver seat dug into my thigh nearest the driver door. I had to literally sit with my knees together tight. There will not be relaxed legs sitting in the front. Single cup holders in a $100,000 LC vehicle. A touring car that's meant to go up & down the coast. The list goes on. It seems like an erratic company that doesn't build on last year's better innovations.
People buy Lexus for quality and reliability. Unlike owners of German brands, they don't worry about 0 - 60 times, or how much power is under the bonnet (hood),
I just purchased an es350 I wear a ponytail, it hits the headrest and if headrest is risen it hits the roof when the seat moves back and forward. Very annoying.also I was told that it was going to be compatible with android soon but you said it might not be able to upgrade. Not happy since I have android.I had an Es 350 2008 I believe I liked it a lot better.
Damn you talked more in this video than I have in the last decade 😂 Excellent review. I think this colour might be Glacial Ecru, it looks like it anyway.
Looks great but I would always see the FrankKnobs on this auto, from A Lexus owner. I miss the heated steering wheel the most on my RX350...About the only thing I miss from my last BMW 3X, don’t miss the expensive repairs. I have replaced the hood lifts and break pads hay it’s a 2012. Only Lexus from now on.
Why on Earth would they not put Android Auto in the infotainment system but have Apple? Not to mention they may not update the system when they eventually do. My brother's Avalon has it.
I've owned a 2018 Mustang GT, 4 LS1 trans ams, a 05 LS2 GTO and a 10 grand sport vett and now I drive a 13 Lexus gs350 luxury package and I'm not going back. The overall build quality of any modern Lexus makes every American car you will touch feel like trash. I drove a brand new F150 yesterday and everything from the quality of the "leather" if you really want to call it that, to all the materials on the inside just did not seem like it would hold up at all. Its almost like the newer the car/truck in the American segment the cheaper they get over time now.
The Lexus looks better than the Avalon but not having the practicality of fold down heated back seats may be a deal breaker. I saw interior on the Avalon Limited in person and it is really nice as well. I will wait until I see the pricing on a upgraded 300h to make a final decision. Mileage is amazing for both vehicles at 43 to 45 mph. In heavy city driving it makes a difference, we have a Prius and it gets around 47-48 mph but much smaller car.
Was really looking forward to getting this car but will end up with another luxury car or category (SUV, crossover) that will have rear heated folded seats and panoramic moonroof. The frankenknobs placement is distracting and gimmicky. So disappointing with its lack of options.
Lexus recommends premium fuel because it's a *premium* product, but almost all of them have historically run just fine *with no power or efficiency penalty* on regular unleaded. What's the story with this hybrid?
There was no power or efficiency penalty directly noticeable by the user, but that was because the engine was detuned at the factory to run smoothly on the lower octane fuel. Raising the ante to premium frees the engineers to advance the timing and/or raise the compression to deliver a greater combination of power and economy. Now, some cars' electronics let you run regular or get more power by running premium, like current Mazda turbos. I don't know whether Lexus "recommends" or "requires" premium-- big difference.

Alex your videos are fantastic. Super helpful. Kudos.
The LC uses a Lithium-ion bttery. 20kg lighter 20% smaller. Did the voice commands work for you? Track pad is handy if no voice command available.
If it said 49.3 it's probably more like 47-47.5mpg which is still great
I hope I get that when mine is delivered in February.
when will you do the official scores for the ES300h?
Does it have Android auto and I wish they have Garmin navigation intergated and wireless charging and auto windows roll up when close the car with alarm system.
My father is businessman. He like good fuel economy van. I like fast car, suv or van because it is thrilling to drive. Now i like more good fuel economy vehicle when gas prices are higher and higher.
The analog clock in the car appears to be out of place with the interior design. The clock is in other locations and just appears to be extraneous. I think I'd remove it and integrate that space into the screen design. Thoughts?
How do you get the display of the mpg efficiency on the dashboard?
Thank you for the great content. I have a
2019 ES 300h (my first Lexus Hybrid - coming from a Honda Hybrid).
Thank you!
Absolutely excellent cars no European for me, thanks for this great review.
Drive way better too.
How do you compare the A/C with the HYBRID and the ES 350 ??? Please reply. Thanks!!!!!
Best car I have ever owned.
Is that the right rear door having a faulty shut line or just the camera playing tricks??
Great video Alex thank you!! Fast becoming a Lexus fan over here but still considering the MKZ for lower entry level price 👍
Alex is there a place to hold two drinks in front area? Do you know what the price for hybrid will be and when they will become available?
With the battery under the rear seat, I don't understand why Lexus doesn't design the seat backs to fold down. My best friend owns an ES and he's always needing to borrow my truck to pick up stuff at Lowe's!
I know wagons are out of style nowadays but I would love to see an ES Wagon.
Thanks for a great review Alex. Does anyone know if this model offers Lane centering similar to Honda sensing and Nissan pro-pilot??
Yes. Its new and called Lane Tracing Assist. Impossible to find much reviews on it but it seems to work something similar to propilot.
That clock near the infotainment screen seems so out of place.
12:55 that's what she said... Keep up the great reviews, Alex. Can't wait to make my own review when we get these on the lot late this summer. I noticed it has the same door handles as the LC and the LS...ballin'
Wish the rear seat can fold down! Alas
This guy is one the best reviewers in my opinion. But I am wandering why he does not have many viewers.
Keep up the good work.
Great review… quick question..does the es 300h have an awd option? Or is it just a fwd car? Thanks
Only es 250 is awd
GREAT Review. Lovely car.
Thank you so much for your efforts..
I like this grill better than the 2019 Avalon Hybrid. No one can top your through reviews. I’m neutral on the interior knobs. I wonder if this is worth the extra money vs the 2019 Avalon Hybrid?
The monitor controlled AC on/off is not convenient at all.
Has there been a newer video made on the 2020 or 2021 version of the ES300h with grading?
Overall styling for 2019 is better than before.
I have a supercharged mustang GT as my daily but I’m looking for a good comfortable daily and I think I’m going to go with a Lexus. What are the best Lexus cars between $30,000 -$50,000????
2019 Lexus ES 350 Ultra Luxury/ & or es 300h ultra luxury or if you can find a 2018-2019 Lexus LS
Extremely detailed review i love it
Where are the ratings?
Wow great review! And the car is very nice
I am currently leasing The Es 300h 2018, but I recently got it in just a month and a half ago. I should've waited :/ dang it.
u r an iddiot
Great review as usual. I agree the 'bolts' are odd looking. I drive the current ES hybrid and it has been absolutely stellar with no issues. I average around 40-41 mpg in mixed driving which always amazes me for a vehicle this size. While I would consider this newer version when I go to replace it in a few years, it seems I'd give up very little by simply going with the Avalon Hybrid.

Any maintenance issue on the electrical and motors ? Batteries ?
Always great reviews! Thanks Alex.
Nice review, I love to watch your reviews, very detailed. Is there any difference between 2018 Camry hybrid and this 2019 ES 300h apart from Luxury?
go back and watch his review again. He specifically mentions things like stronger construction and insulation.
Unlike owners of German brands, they don't worry about 0 - 60 times,
or how much power is under the bonnet (hood),
I just purchased an es350 I wear a ponytail, it hits the headrest and if headrest is risen it hits the roof when the seat moves back and forward. Very annoying.also I was told that it was going to be compatible with android soon but you said it might not be able to upgrade. Not happy since I have android.I had an Es 350 2008 I believe I liked it a lot better.
You've raised your standards. The 2008 didn't work with Android at all.
I’m digging the Frankenstein touch
in the same money of this car i can buey 2 years old mercedes E300E. who is better pleas your suggestion.
Depends on what you want. Performance, Mercedes all day. Reliability and durability, Lexus forever.
Dude. Seriously. You are amazing.
Looks like a large car. Surprised that they didn't make Lithium-ion for Lexus Brand ES 350. Only if they had a GS with better gas mileage and power.
Why on Earth would they not put Android Auto in the infotainment system but have Apple? Not to mention they may not update the system when they eventually do. My brother's Avalon has it.
could you add scale to your sedan length comparison chart? the 2019 ES on your chart looks twice the length of my audi A4.
It is, in fact, much much longer. Roomier too, especially behind the front seats.
great looking car
Front wheel drive is a no go. Lexus needed to change that considering the GS is going to be scrapped.
Awesome but I like ES Gen 6th 's COOL and Heating seat controls
Too bad the rear seats don't fold down. They do on the new Avalon.
Mamo No heated rear seats either.
Norm T lol but the Avalon has rear heated seats!!.... how stupid can Lexus be....
Was really looking forward to getting this car but will end up with another luxury car or category (SUV, crossover) that will have rear heated folded seats and panoramic moonroof. The frankenknobs placement is distracting and gimmicky. So disappointing with its lack of options.
Norm T WHO NEED,S HEATED Seats anyway you Will heat your Ass off
Always nice REVIEW ! THanks SIR
Excellent Excellent review Alex, thank you.
This car will sell. That grille is excellent and should come in all black for the F Sport.
Hi Alex is there a spare tire?
