8:28 Who knew that the right time would be 2 years later when gas is at $6-$7 per gallon. I'm so glad I got my 2020 ES this last month. I average 42MPG in the last month since getting it. Amazing car, indeed.
@@amoresalfredo where did you see that??? that's not true. you would need to be putting putting 200,000 + miles in 3 years for that to happen. Real world, the toyota hybrid batteries will last over 10 years easily for normal driving. Usually I see cars with close to 200k miles when the battery starts to degrade. Most owners will never even keep the car that long
@@amoresalfredo the warranty for the battery is 10 years/120k miles. So you definitely won’t be paying for it. But the nickel hydride battery lasts longer than the lithium ion packs so it’s much longer than 3-4 years. Not sure where you read that timeframe from.

A lot of the airport limousine companies in my area have adopted the ESh and RXh into their fleets. It's so much nicer to sit in a smooth and quiet Lexus after a long flight than a rattling beat up Lincoln MKT/MKZ

@@2006gtobob Used Lexus end up having rattles too... And A lincoln MKZ is built on the ford's european mondeo platform. Arguably stiffer than anything Toyota has ever put in that class. Its one of the best handling FWD chasis ever built. Rattles is more of an issue with interior plastic quality nowadays. Youll be hard pressed to find a premium brand with weak bodies.

The result was a car so solid that Wall Street Journal tester Dan Neil specifically called out that trait, speculating that Lexus probably overspent to over-engineer the car because of its pivotal role as the first ES marketed in the prestige-critical home market of Japan. Give one a drive over the rough stuff.

The most competent and objective review of a Lexus I've ever come across. The narration is at the same time informative and honestly passionate. The production is unbelievable near poetry. This channel is outstanding. 👏
For those that dont get it, you cant cross shop an ES with a BMW 3/4 series or Audi a3'a4 or even a5. It is a massive vehicle, bigger than a 5 series, smaller than a 7 series, and bigger than an audi a6. That is why the IS and the ES are similar in price, your choice is size/drive train. IS is smaller, rear wheel drive, and aims at the 3 series directly (although it isnt very competitive because its down on things like trunk space and power) but the ES is a front wheel drive giant ocean liner. Nothing in the german market can come close to it as far as size/$. 45 grand for a tiny almost toy like a3 vs a proper battle ship? its your preference, do you want to drop money on a small but fun car that has the luxury too, or drop it on the most refined cruiser in its price bracket. The hybrid vs regular, its up to you. I would take the regular v6 as it is very quick and still gets good gas mileage. If you are worried about toyotas hybrid system, my friend bought a 06 highlander hybrid in 2020...It runs like new.
Daniel G - If your solely basing your decision on pricing around $45-50k, than yes, you’re limiting yourself if you want a larger luxury cruiser. I was actually in the market for a new car last year since I crashed my 2013 Avalon Limited, and you are right the 19/20 ES is large. It actually uses same platform as the Avalon, so I know the size very well. And so when I needed a replacement, I wanted a larger car, so I looked at BMW 540i, Audi A6 Prestige, and the 2019 ES Ultra Luxury. (I cared more about comparable SIZE and not pricing). LOVED this ES for its quietness and refinement. Drove an ES with the optional noise-cancelling wheels, double-pane acoustics glass and sound deadening underbody. So if you’re into comfort, serenity, and complete reliability, you can’t go wrong with this car. And for the money, you get A LOT more with the Lexus. The Lexus was $49k fully loaded with all options, vs $67k for Audi and $75k for BMW. For my story, I really loved the ES but ended up with the Audi A6 only b/c *Audi had a much better overall safety technology package.* A few things which the Germans do A LOT better Lexus right now is their radar detection and autonomous drive modes. Lexus’ Lane Keep Assist and Dynamic Cruise Control is kind of a joke. The DCC is way too jerky in stop/go traffic and the distance kept is way too far. And Lexus Blind Spot Monitoring is okay but only works when cars are actually IN your blind spot, while Audi can even detect Fast approaching cars further away and actually will warn you based on your car’s speed _relative to the approaching car’s speed._ Now that’s much more advanced technology Lexus needs to catch up on. 3D camera on Lexus looks low res compared to the camera on the Audi. Of course with all the technology, it’s not surprising I spent nearly $20k more than the Lexus.

As a long time German luxury driver..I would also add that all those electronics you are raving about in your Audi..as well as in other German luxury cars..break down quite often and cost a massive amount of money to repair. Not so with Lexus who have the most reliable electronics of all luxury car brands. So there is also that to consider.
I agree with you but I,m not a big fan of speed. Mpg and the refinement of toyota,s hybrid system is what I,ll go for. So I,ll take the hybrid over the v6. The v6 is fast and has good mileage though, so if your,re someone that,s into speed, you can't go wrong with the v6. That,s just not my thing. The rumour is that the next Lexus IS and Lexus RC will come with the skyactiv x engine from mazda along with mazda,s own mazda 6. All with rear wheel drive. And german luxury vehicles have always had issues with their electronics. It,s well known. And they generally cost a lot maintain. But then again, german luxury brands seem to be for 2 kinds of people 1) rich people who don't mind burning money on maintenance costs 2) people who like the status of driving a german car brand Lexus as a whole on the other hand seem to be geared not towards the rich but towards the upper middle class with very little maintenance cost, they seem to not put all the technology in it to make it affordable because it will cost like 20,000 dollars more, although the upcoming lexus LQ will be a model geared towards the rich. Carl Eze I would like to agree with most your statements but can also add after working for the Europeans and currently working for Lexus and reviewing them that Europeans are special in how they drive. Meaning how they feel on the road for grip and performance and some people prefer that. The Lexus in reliability and overall build quality is superior definitely but the only thing is that sometimes misses the excitement and thrill of driving 👌👌.
When I had my Lexus I drove several 2018 and earlier ES models as loaners, and then I got a 2019 as a loaner. It is a night-and-day difference between this new one and the old ones. Lexus really hit a home run with the redesign. It's quieter, smoother, and has a far nicer interior - and the outside is better looking too. Overall I love it. It's not really my first choice if I could only have one car, but as a daily runner it'd be amazing.

By the way I like that the front doors on ES are large, I’m “tall” and have to push back the seat more than typical, in most cars the B pillar gets in my way of my left elbow, and I can’t rest my elbow in the door card. ES feels perfectly sized for someone +6’ tall.
This. I've sat in so many cars at auto shows where I go to get out and BAM, my left side slams into the B pillar. Never had that issue with a Toyota product.
Even the RX, whose main demographic is middle-aged 5'2 women has super long doors. The only downside is that you really have to hug the door when parking tightly between cars
I ended up buying the 2022 Luxury edition of this car based in no small part on this excellent review. Absolutely adore the car. The interior is so nice it feels like a weight comes off my shoulders as soon as I get in. Thanks to the sound isolation, amazing audio system, and driving assists like radar cruise control and lane keep my exhausting hour long stop-and-go commute has changed from a source of stress to a relaxing time. And while it's definitely not a sporty car, coming from an average economy car the acceleration and engine sound was a huge upgrade (even if it pales in comparison to more dedicated sports cars).
No doubt that the ES is one of the most reliable new cars on sale today but it's a shame that they shifted production for NA models to Kentucky in 2016, whereas they used to be made exclusively in Japan. The RX is made in Canada and has stood the test of time, but I'm skeptical about American manufacturing standards.
Audi and BMW is garbage compared to quality that is Lexus. I've worked on all of them and it seems that when it comes to the Germans everyone is playing the "how can we reinvent the wheel and make things less reliable" game, while the Toyota and Lexus brand in general stick tried and true engineering with bullet proof motors and quality electronics that the Japanese are known for.
@@papa_pt You're also paying substantially more for marginal performance with a German vehicle. The vast majority of people buying these vehicles can't tell the difference. Everyone feels their pockets though.
@@Jasonhb07 the difference used to be a lot larger than it is now. in terms of feeling the difference, that depends on the class and car. for luxury I think Lexus is with the best, but they aren't quite there for sport-oriented driving (yes the gs-f and is-f are good not great)
@@papa_pt I worked as a bellman at a fancy hotel in college. I drove a lot of luxury cars years 90s to present. It's amazing feeling how much progress manufactures have made. Lexus has come the furthest in my opinion. If you can get over the looks, I don't see why anybody would buy German as a long-term investment. The GS-F is a collector that'll run for decades, while AMGs and Ms will be sitting in the scrap yard in a few years. German automakers have no excuse for producing disposable vehicles, which is a shame considering how attractive some models are. If you can get over Lexus' design, I don't see why you would purchase elsewhere.
With the upgraded center console and carplay, other than that trackpad this is now a 10/10 interior. I am super excited for Lexus to finally be back with some really competitive offerings.

which models are u talking about anyway? im looking to get a GS F within the next couple years and those are at about 45K for a used one right now....wheres the value in a car that drops by 50% in 3 years?
Resale don't mean anything when you drive 40k miles a year, no matter the brand. They will break if you keep them long enough generally around 150-220k which for me is about 5-7 years. The only vehicle I will ever finance is a truck, resale and reliability. Not hating Toyota's have their place and make great cars, but they do depreciate quite badly. There are 2019 es with less than 15k miles in the 30k's already 10-15k below msrp.
I have this car, 2019 ultra luxury version. Only difference is the 2020 has android auto. The 2019 doesnt. It's very hard finding an ultra luxury. I had to fly to northern ca to get the ultra luxury in pearl white. I do love this car. I get 45 mpg as advertised. In awful traffic i get 50mpg because of the slower driving speeds allowing more ev mode use. The Mark Levinson sounds great. It doesnt distort. 2 features that i dont really use often are the HUD and electronic rear sunscreen, but they're cool to have. I also have the triple beam lights, an expensive upgrade but worth it. They have the added functionality of turning to illuminate the road ahead when you're making a left or right hand turn. I can say lots about this car, but dont want to write a super long comment.
@@MrKillerRC It might be different in 2021/2022, but on my 2019 model, the ultra luxury got you the semi aniline leather seats and the "lateral perfomance dampers". Plus it was a lot easier to find all the available upgrades in the ultra luxury models. Lexus tends to keep the higher end options out of their lower models. I didn't find any Luxury models with the Mark Levinson system at the time. I also didn't find any Luxury models with the Triple Beam headlights.
I'm on my 3rd RX, first Hybrid (450H). Every Lexus I have owned has been flawless. I love the hybrid for the cool tech, and the (slightly) improved gas mileage. It's fun driving around the neighborhood in all-electric mode virtually silent- the only drawback is that people sometimes step in from of the car because they can't hear it coming. I will always choose Lexus over European brands for their exceptional reliability, and high re-sale value. Thanks for the excellent review sir.
By the way, the bamboo trim on the dash is real wood, but it's glued on to stripe of plastic. I assume that is a quite common way (at least in this car price level) to do this in order to be able to snap the piece of trim on its place. Despite this "misleading comment" on the video, I like your videos a lot. Thanks again!

I DID test drive it... and I DID buy it...and I DO love it. And the best part is that hybrid pedestrian detection noise that he put at the very beginning. I describe it as the very best and nicest Honda Accord you can buy - no greater praise than that.
I've got a 2014 ES300H, I test drove a 2014 ES350 before I bought it and I prefer the hybrid. It's quieter, smoother due to no shifts and less nvh, no delay from waiting for a downshift and really has plenty of power and response from the electric torque. I put 300 miles a day on it and absolutely love it.
My family was given a 2019 ES300h as a loaner after taking my mom's 2016 ES 350 in for a normal servicing. I absolutely loved it. I find the sound that it makes when you're reversing so satisfying for some reason lol
At the 8min mark you made a great point. I did not buy my ES Hybrid for its performance or to take around bends fast or for it to be a "fun" car. I got it because it's comfortable, it's quiet, it's great on fuel and I feel at peace with myself when I drive it. That ladies and gentlemen is why you get an ES hybrid.
I currently drive a 2016 GS350 F-Sport & have driven both versions of the ES as loaner vehicles while my car was being serviced. First drove the ES350 which I didn't like since it had too much power for a 300 + HP FWD vehicle. Then I drove the ES300h which I like it more than I thought I would & much more than the 350. It was also the first hybrid I've ever driven. It had good power & showed it was averaging nearly 50 MPG. I'm sticking with my GS for now since I just bought the car two years ago, but my future vehicle will for sure be a hybrid or electric.
I’m looking for a daily driver commuter car replacement and this Lexus might be it. My lease term is over on my current vehicle in Q4 of this year. I have been considering an LS, but spending that much to justify it would mean paying it off in 4-5 years and driving it another 5 years to get my maximum return. Not sure I want to be married to a vehicle that long. On another note, I really enjoyed the high production quality on this (as usual with SG productions) as well as the car you reviewed. Production quality is low key, classy, presented well with and the shot to shot transitions make sense all with an artful aesthetic with your imaging and use of light. Aesthetically the way you framed the car in your opening shots with the cloud cover background. You also respect your viewers intelligence as well and don’t come off as snobbish or talking down to me. I do like your humorous references and occasional innuendo and perjorative. You should consider getting your work picked up by some airlines to include in their in-flight entertainment. I’ve seen this done with a couple TH-cam producers pertaining to fine wristwatches.
My friend’s dad has this car, the Lexus ES300h I rode in it a few times and I have to say it’s really nice he liked the car so much that he got another one after he finished his lease
After my wife's 250h was totalled by a hit-and-run driver earlier this year, we picked up an off-lease 2018 ES300h. This was before used prices became silly, so we were able to pick the car up for about half the price of a new one. I was thrilled that we were able to source one with the Mark Levinson sound system, because it is divine sounding. I was also pleased that the car has a nice iPod interface, so I can have all my music along with me on long road trips. Other than that, it is a super comfortable, super quiet luxurious sedan with unbelievable gas mileage that's perfect for long road trips. Me, personally, I prefer more sporty vehicles, so I'm sticking with my 6-Speed Manual Acura TSX, but my wife loves this car and it does make for very pleasant vacation road trips.
It's worth noting that the 2018 described here is materially different from the car in this video in numerous ways: chassis, ride and handling, dimensions, previous generation of the hybrid powertrain, different stereo, for starters.
I used to work for Lexus. One time a customer asked me if I would buy the ES myself, I told her my real response right away, nope. But I added I would buy this car for my mom. It's just not a driver's car but its such a good regular car.
I'm amazed at how many reviews are negative because it's not a sports car so this is a refreshing change. It's not a sports car but it is the best car I've ever owned and driven. This is a car for the real world. EV is more power assist and it keeps the fuel consumption down by running on electric at low speeds and take off. Put your foot down and the combined electric and petrol gets along. It makes you feel good and pampered.
Ugliest ever grille is the sole reason that prevents me from buying a Lexus. I have absolutely no doubt on their reliability & durability which really matters in the long run.
I've watched your other reviews with the V6 and you're selling the hybrid very well. I've reached the point in my life where I have other cars for the speed and fun, but for daily driving, surrounded by idiots, crappy roads and traffic, the things I want out of a daily are: 1. Silence 2. Isolation 3. Butter smooth ride 4. An excellent audio system to listen to Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Zeppelin, and Metallica, among others, very loudly and clearly. 5. And, 35+mpg sounds very good.
Follow up: I FINALLY test drove an ES and I came away very impressed. They didn't have the hybrid, unfortunately. The V6 came across as adequately powered and smoooooth. The ride is very refined, smooth, and silent. I love how Lexus kept it simple for reliability. The standard sound system sounds good, unfortunately they didn't have a Mark Levinson equipped car for comparison. They were fortunate to have ONE 2021 and ONE 2022 ES at the dealership. I drove what they had. The materials seem top notch. Solid, and top notch. There aren't many cars for twice the price that are as good as this, in my opinion. My only gripe is the GUI. It's not that good in my opinion. Give me buttons laid out logically and I'd be happier. As is, it's an excellent car.
@@2006gtobob Don't know if you drove the '21, the '22 or both. The '21 GUI is just awful with the trackpad. Although the '22 still has it, they made the screen a touchscreen so you never ever have to touch the damn thing as long as you live (he said as a very conscious '22 owner). If you'd prefer a fully updated system with better menus, faster action and no trackpad at all, that's reportedly coming, probably in '23 (see the current NX for a preview of what it's like).
@@tonysterbenc I drove both. The 23 looks more promising as far as the interface, cup holders, etc goes. I will miss the clock, unless Lexus realizes its mistake concerning that and it stays.
@@2006gtobob The funny thing is, there's both a digital clock above the gauges and that analog clock near the screen, and when I want to know what time it is, my eyes always go to the analog clock.

Hmm...I have 2019 Lexus ES350 Base model, and everyone who has it will tell you that there is a problem with the sound system. For some reason it's designed to be front bias (also the Mark Levinson). Which means most of the sound comes from the front speakers. When you try to adjust the front/rear balance there is a point where it cuts off and sound is muted. There is almost no sound coming off the rear door speakers. There are no speakers in the back of rear passengers, only sub-woofer. I have never seen that in any car the I have owned. If you still have access to the ES, go ahead and check it out. I have the V6 model, gas mileage is awesome.On an avg 60mile trip at 70mph with no traffic, I'm getting 38-40Mpg. The Dynamic cruise control is good, it works until you stop. Lane assist works almost perfect. So, yeah, pretty good car.

Fantastic review and totally agree. I recently took an Uber in a brand new ES and was blown away by the interior, comfort and quietness. Perfect for where I live, Los Angeles, where you spend most of your time crawling in traffic. Definitely giving this a hard look when my 5 series lease is up.
Test drove this. The seating comfort, the refinement and the relaxing demeanour will haunt me for a very long time. This is one of those cars which one could love given all its foibles (which can be counted on two fingers).

Had mine for 3000 miles now. Crawl through London North Circular peaceful. Love the audio. Seats fantastic. Matrix headlamps Good. (not for the state's) Euro Takumi spec avoids the bamboo trim opting for a glossy zebrano wood that isn't 80s mercedes looking. Electric recline on rear seats nice too. This will be a keeper. Rare sight in UK!
I bought a 2020 ES350 Ultra Luxury trim with all the options. Honestly, I considered the Hybrid but it came down to I wanted the extra power the V6 provided and the V6 is several hundred dollars cheaper without the need to ever change batteries. Honestly it comes down to personal preference and both are great cars!
The batteries don't have to be changed until about 300,000 miles. I promise the couple hundred you saved on the initial price doesn't outweigh the gas savings.

@@insayn7995 to be fair, a Tesla model 3 is a better vehicle in terms of technology, efficiency all while retaining driving performance. I agree the Lexus interior is much better and I actually also prefer its looks .
I have a 2013 es300h, and even though it’s the slowest car I’ve ever owned, I LOVE it. Comfortable and for long trips, still gets 35mpg combined on 10 year old batteries. 40mpg if in the low country like South Carolina. I love the wheel navigation it has for the UI. I’ve memorized where it needs to up down left or right to get to where I need to go without looking at the screen because it has tactile feed back when you’re moving the wheel.
I've never liked the ES line up of cars, ever! Now that I watched this quick video I am. As a daily all around car I could see myself enjoying one of these. (:
Lexus kills me because they make so much sense, but I can't get over the grill aside from the LC and LS implementations. Wish they had like a vanilla 2000-2005 grill option. BTW recent convert to this channel. Doug's reviews just seem mundane after seeing geese's videos. Great camerawork and through breakdowns. You don't even have to like cars to enjoy this.
Nobody ever comments about the unique intro music if each video which captures the essence of each car and is the summary of the whole review in about 10 seconds.
I think they fasten real bamboo to a plastic backing. That's how pretty much all automotive real-wood trim below the Rolls level is made. Not only lower in cost, but prevents splintering to meet crash safety standards.
I sat in this car at the autoshow in February 2020. I must say it was so nice and roomy inside for a tall person. It made me feel 'special' sitting inside it, like I finally arrived if I owned one. You know this car is a great car when airports are using it as limousine fleet cars in the hybrid version. A testament to its reliability and performance. It was easy to fall in love with this car. It stood out from everything else in the luxury sedan category by far and at an amazingly affordable price point fully loaded.
I have to say, I'm pretty sure I watch the majority of car reviews on TH-cam, and by far your intro for your car reviews are the best I've ever seen. I don't know how you found the perfect song to relate to the Lexus ES but you did. Also your photography skills are incredible. It literally looks like I'm watching an official Lexus commercial.
I’m a Lexus apprentice have gotten to test drive a lot of new Lexus’s, have to say the es remains my favorite. Quietest interior smooth ride and I agree about the interior, just fantastic.

I drove even a 2003 ES300 and I was blown away by how smooth it was. I couldn't believe that type of car could be picked up for $4k. The engine and transmission felt like they were in a different room.
Agree with 99% of the review, except maybe his take on the hybrid’s 4cyl engine noise level. I’ve driven the hybrid and V6 back to back, and it was clear to me that the V6 is quieter and smoother. Also, during similar styles of driving, the 4cyl seemed to downshift more frequently and remained at higher rpms than the V6, compounding to the noise and feel differences between two. The engine characteristics were pretty dominant in the overall luxury driving experience of this car. To me, the V6 felt like it added a level of refinement to this car that no other entry level luxury cars could, whereas the 4cyl actually took something away from this car’s overall excellence in execution, to a point I wouldn’t consider it. In the end, I ended up getting a ‘19 ES350. But this is just my anecdotal opinion, and I recommend potential buyers to test drive both back to back, and see it for themselves. Finally, while I’m still amazed at how comfortable and luxurious this car is at its price point every time I drive it, I just want to share a few negatives from my ownership. The transmission is just a little bit jerky, but it could just be my car, or maybe it could use a programming update - I’m not sure. The gas gauge is overly conservative. Manual says 16.x gal, but I always only fill 12-13 gal when it says it’s empty. The reserve tank may be several gal, but it still reduces the range I can drive comfortably. I’m not an audio expert, and by no means I’m challenging the Goose’s technical analysis, but to my untrained ears, the ML audio sounds just-better-than-average. I would definitely not do without ML, but it’s not one of the highlights of this car, as the B&O system was in my previous’17 A4. Take a look at these in your test drives.
The hybrid drivetrain is more refined, especially in pure EV mode or cruising flat highway than the v6. The only reason to go V6 is if you live in hilly terrain and want more power. I disagree, B&O are terrible overall sonically and are put in a bargin bin Ford. Keyword is untrained ears as you stated.
Valid comments, walking; thank you for sharing them. You're not the only one with that opinion about the sound of the hybrid version. As for the ML stereo, owner forums and review sites were lit up with bitter complaints from owners that the '19 ES stereos (base worse than ML) minimized the sound from the rear speakers to the point of nonexistence. Some owners who complained got a replacement rear amplifier that reportedly helped considerably, although others who complained were denied, and I think there was a running change on this during the 2020 model year. Meanwhile, try adjusting your fader 2 notches to the rear and setting Surround to Off. (Note that each medium - radio, USB, CD, etc. - needs all these settings changed separately.) Oddly, turning Surround off makes it sound more like surround. Why, I have no idea.
Anyone who is trying to bash this ES350 either version bcs is slow or not a performance car go and get performance one if thats what u want from a car. ES350 was never meant to be build for race tracks, it was designed for superior ride quality and luxury ride and Lexus did outstanding job with this car!

Real world, the toyota hybrid batteries will last over 10 years easily for normal driving. Usually I see cars with close to 200k miles when the battery starts to degrade. Most owners will never even keep the car that long
@@amoresalfredo the warranty for the battery is 10 years/120k miles. So you definitely won’t be paying for it. But the nickel hydride battery lasts longer than the lithium ion packs so it’s much longer than 3-4 years. Not sure where you read that timeframe from.

A lot of the airport limousine companies in my area have adopted the ESh and RXh into their fleets. It's so much nicer to sit in a smooth and quiet Lexus after a long flight than a rattling beat up Lincoln MKT/MKZ

@@2006gtobob Used Lexus end up having rattles too... And A lincoln MKZ is built on the ford's european mondeo platform. Arguably stiffer than anything Toyota has ever put in that class. Its one of the best handling FWD chasis ever built. Rattles is more of an issue with interior plastic quality nowadays. Youll be hard pressed to find a premium brand with weak bodies.

I have a 2019 Lexus 300 h. I am 77 and LOVE THIS CAR. It easily gets 46+ mpg on the highway. Everyone has an SUV which is why I wanted the sedan.

The most competent and objective review of a Lexus I've ever come across. The narration is at the same time informative and honestly passionate. The production is unbelievable near poetry. This channel is outstanding. 👏
For those that dont get it, you cant cross shop an ES with a BMW 3/4 series or Audi a3'a4 or even a5. It is a massive vehicle, bigger than a 5 series, smaller than a 7 series, and bigger than an audi a6. That is why the IS and the ES are similar in price, your choice is size/drive train. IS is smaller, rear wheel drive, and aims at the 3 series directly (although it isnt very competitive because its down on things like trunk space and power) but the ES is a front wheel drive giant ocean liner. Nothing in the german market can come close to it as far as size/$. 45 grand for a tiny almost toy like a3 vs a proper battle ship? its your preference, do you want to drop money on a small but fun car that has the luxury too, or drop it on the most refined cruiser in its price bracket.
The hybrid vs regular, its up to you. I would take the regular v6 as it is very quick and still gets good gas mileage.
If you are worried about toyotas hybrid system, my friend bought a 06 highlander hybrid in 2020...It runs like new.

I was actually in the market for a new car last year since I crashed my 2013 Avalon Limited, and you are right the 19/20 ES is large. It actually uses same platform as the Avalon, so I know the size very well. And so when I needed a replacement, I wanted a larger car, so I looked at BMW 540i, Audi A6 Prestige, and the 2019 ES Ultra Luxury. (I cared more about comparable SIZE and not pricing).
LOVED this ES for its quietness and refinement. Drove an ES with the optional noise-cancelling wheels, double-pane acoustics glass and sound deadening underbody. So if you’re into comfort, serenity, and complete reliability, you can’t go wrong with this car. And for the money, you get A LOT more with the Lexus. The Lexus was $49k fully loaded with all options, vs $67k for Audi and $75k for BMW.
For my story, I really loved the ES but ended up with the Audi A6 only b/c *Audi had a much better overall safety technology package.* A few things which the Germans do A LOT better Lexus right now is their radar detection and autonomous drive modes. Lexus’ Lane Keep Assist and Dynamic Cruise Control is kind of a joke. The DCC is way too jerky in stop/go traffic and the distance kept is way too far. And Lexus Blind Spot Monitoring is okay but only works when cars are actually IN your blind spot, while Audi can even detect Fast approaching cars further away and actually will warn you based on your car’s speed _relative to the approaching car’s speed._ Now that’s much more advanced technology Lexus needs to catch up on. 3D camera on Lexus looks low res compared to the camera on the Audi. Of course with all the technology, it’s not surprising I spent nearly $20k more than the Lexus.

As a long time German luxury driver..I would also add that all those electronics you are raving about in your Audi..as well as in other German luxury cars..break down quite often and cost a massive amount of money to repair. Not so with Lexus who have the most reliable electronics of all luxury car brands. So there is also that to consider.
I agree with you but I,m not a big fan of speed. Mpg and the refinement of toyota,s hybrid system is what I,ll go for. So I,ll take the hybrid over the v6. The v6 is fast and has good mileage though, so if your,re someone that,s into speed, you can't go wrong with the v6. That,s just not my thing.
The rumour is that the next Lexus IS and Lexus RC will come with the skyactiv x engine from mazda along with mazda,s own mazda 6. All with rear wheel drive.
And german luxury vehicles have always had issues with their electronics. It,s well known. And they generally cost a lot maintain.
But then again, german luxury brands seem to be for 2 kinds of people
1) rich people who don't mind burning money on maintenance costs
2) people who like the status of driving a german car brand
Lexus as a whole on the other hand seem to be geared not towards the rich but towards the upper middle class with very little maintenance cost, they seem to not put all the technology in it to make it affordable because it will cost like 20,000 dollars more, although the upcoming lexus LQ will be a model geared towards the rich.

Carl Eze I would like to agree with most your statements but can also add after working for the Europeans and currently working for Lexus and reviewing them that Europeans are special in how they drive. Meaning how they feel on the road for grip and performance and some people prefer that. The Lexus in reliability and overall build quality is superior definitely but the only thing is that sometimes misses the excitement and thrill of driving 👌👌.
When I had my Lexus I drove several 2018 and earlier ES models as loaners, and then I got a 2019 as a loaner. It is a night-and-day difference between this new one and the old ones. Lexus really hit a home run with the redesign. It's quieter, smoother, and has a far nicer interior - and the outside is better looking too. Overall I love it. It's not really my first choice if I could only have one car, but as a daily runner it'd be amazing.

By the way I like that the front doors on ES are large, I’m “tall” and have to push back the seat more than typical, in most cars the B pillar gets in my way of my left elbow, and I can’t rest my elbow in the door card. ES feels perfectly sized for someone +6’ tall.
This. I've sat in so many cars at auto shows where I go to get out and BAM, my left side slams into the B pillar. Never had that issue with a Toyota product.
Even the RX, whose main demographic is middle-aged 5'2 women has super long doors. The only downside is that you really have to hug the door when parking tightly between cars
The only problem is if you have a bad back then you will have a hard time leaning forward to reach the door handle.

I ended up buying the 2022 Luxury edition of this car based in no small part on this excellent review. Absolutely adore the car. The interior is so nice it feels like a weight comes off my shoulders as soon as I get in.
Thanks to the sound isolation, amazing audio system, and driving assists like radar cruise control and lane keep my exhausting hour long stop-and-go commute has changed from a source of stress to a relaxing time.
And while it's definitely not a sporty car, coming from an average economy car the acceleration and engine sound was a huge upgrade (even if it pales in comparison to more dedicated sports cars).
Quality production.
No doubt that the ES is one of the most reliable new cars on sale today but it's a shame that they shifted production for NA models to Kentucky in 2016, whereas they used to be made exclusively in Japan. The RX is made in Canada and has stood the test of time, but I'm skeptical about American manufacturing standards.
Audi and BMW is garbage compared to quality that is Lexus. I've worked on all of them and it seems that when it comes to the Germans everyone is playing the "how can we reinvent the wheel and make things less reliable" game, while the Toyota and Lexus brand in general stick tried and true engineering with bullet proof motors and quality electronics that the Japanese are known for.
Quality and reliability no doubt. Trade off is that the equivalent German nearly always quicker and drives better

@@papa_pt I worked as a bellman at a fancy hotel in college. I drove a lot of luxury cars years 90s to present. It's amazing feeling how much progress manufactures have made. Lexus has come the furthest in my opinion. If you can get over the looks, I don't see why anybody would buy German as a long-term investment. The GS-F is a collector that'll run for decades, while AMGs and Ms will be sitting in the scrap yard in a few years. German automakers have no excuse for producing disposable vehicles, which is a shame considering how attractive some models are. If you can get over Lexus' design, I don't see why you would purchase elsewhere.

Resale don't mean anything when you drive 40k miles a year, no matter the brand. They will break if you keep them long enough generally around 150-220k which for me is about 5-7 years. The only vehicle I will ever finance is a truck, resale and reliability. Not hating Toyota's have their place and make great cars, but they do depreciate quite badly. There are 2019 es with less than 15k miles in the 30k's already 10-15k below msrp.

I have this car, 2019 ultra luxury version. Only difference is the 2020 has android auto. The 2019 doesnt. It's very hard finding an ultra luxury. I had to fly to northern ca to get the ultra luxury in pearl white. I do love this car. I get 45 mpg as advertised. In awful traffic i get 50mpg because of the slower driving speeds allowing more ev mode use. The Mark Levinson sounds great. It doesnt distort. 2 features that i dont really use often are the HUD and electronic rear sunscreen, but they're cool to have. I also have the triple beam lights, an expensive upgrade but worth it. They have the added functionality of turning to illuminate the road ahead when you're making a left or right hand turn. I can say lots about this car, but dont want to write a super long comment.
What’s the difference between Luxury and Ultra Luxury? I’ve seen Luxury with and without thigh extension, and Mark Levinson.
@@MrKillerRC It might be different in 2021/2022, but on my 2019 model, the ultra luxury got you the semi aniline leather seats and the "lateral perfomance dampers". Plus it was a lot easier to find all the available upgrades in the ultra luxury models. Lexus tends to keep the higher end options out of their lower models. I didn't find any Luxury models with the Mark Levinson system at the time. I also didn't find any Luxury models with the Triple Beam headlights.

I'm on my 3rd RX, first Hybrid (450H). Every Lexus I have owned has been flawless. I love the hybrid for the cool tech, and the (slightly) improved gas mileage. It's fun driving around the neighborhood in all-electric mode virtually silent- the only drawback is that people sometimes step in from of the car because they can't hear it coming. I will always choose Lexus over European brands for their exceptional reliability, and high re-sale value. Thanks for the excellent review sir.
By the way, the bamboo trim on the dash is real wood, but it's glued on to stripe of plastic. I assume that is a quite common way (at least in this car price level) to do this in order to be able to snap the piece of trim on its place. I DID test drive it... and I DID buy it...and I DO love it. And the best part is that hybrid pedestrian detection noise that he put at the very beginning. I describe it as the very best and nicest Honda Accord you can buy - no greater praise than that.
I've got a 2014 ES300H, I test drove a 2014 ES350 before I bought it and I prefer the hybrid. It's quieter, smoother due to no shifts and less nvh, no delay from waiting for a downshift and really has plenty of power and response from the electric torque. I put 300 miles a day on it and absolutely love it.

My family was given a 2019 ES300h as a loaner after taking my mom's 2016 ES 350 in for a normal servicing. I absolutely loved it. I find the sound that it makes when you're reversing so satisfying for some reason lol
At the 8min mark you made a great point. I did not buy my ES Hybrid for its performance or to take around bends fast or for it to be a "fun" car. I got it because it's comfortable, it's quiet, it's great on fuel and I feel at peace with myself when I drive it. That ladies and gentlemen is why you get an ES hybrid.
I currently drive a 2016 GS350 F-Sport & have driven both versions of the ES as loaner vehicles while my car was being serviced. First drove the ES350 which I didn't like since it had too much power for a 300 + HP FWD vehicle. Then I drove the ES300h which I like it more than I thought I would & much more than the 350. It was also the first hybrid I've ever driven. It had good power & showed it was averaging nearly 50 MPG. I'm sticking with my GS for now since I just bought the car two years ago, but my future vehicle will for sure be a hybrid or electric.

I’m looking for a daily driver commuter car replacement and this Lexus might be it. My lease term is over on my current vehicle in Q4 of this year. I have been considering an LS, but spending that much to justify it would mean paying it off in 4-5 years and driving it another 5 years to get my maximum return. Not sure I want to be married to a vehicle that long. On another note, I really enjoyed the high production quality on this (as usual with SG productions) as well as the car you reviewed. Production quality is low key, classy, presented well with and the shot to shot transitions make sense all with an artful aesthetic with your imaging and use of light. Aesthetically the way you framed the car in your opening shots with the cloud cover background. You also respect your viewers intelligence as well and don’t come off as snobbish or talking down to me. I do like your humorous references and occasional innuendo and perjorative. You should consider getting your work picked up by some airlines to include in their in-flight entertainment. I’ve seen this done with a couple TH-cam producers pertaining to fine wristwatches.

After my wife's 250h was totalled by a hit-and-run driver earlier this year, we picked up an off-lease 2018 ES300h. This was before used prices became silly, so we were able to pick the car up for about half the price of a new one. I was thrilled that we were able to source one with the Mark Levinson sound system, because it is divine sounding. I was also pleased that the car has a nice iPod interface, so I can have all my music along with me on long road trips. Other than that, it is a super comfortable, super quiet luxurious sedan with unbelievable gas mileage that's perfect for long road trips. Me, personally, I prefer more sporty vehicles, so I'm sticking with my 6-Speed Manual Acura TSX, but my wife loves this car and it does make for very pleasant vacation road trips.
It's worth noting that the 2018 described here is materially different from the car in this video in numerous ways: chassis, ride and handling, dimensions, previous generation of the hybrid powertrain, different stereo, for starters.
I used to work for Lexus. One time a customer asked me if I would buy the ES myself, I told her my real response right away, nope. But I added I would buy this car for my mom. It's just not a driver's car but its such a good regular car.

I'm amazed at how many reviews are negative because it's not a sports car so this is a refreshing change. It's not a sports car but it is the best car I've ever owned and driven. This is a car for the real world. EV is more power assist and it keeps the fuel consumption down by running on electric at low speeds and take off. Put your foot down and the combined electric and petrol gets along. It makes you feel good and pampered.

Ugliest ever grille is the sole reason that prevents me from buying a Lexus. I have absolutely no doubt on their reliability & durability which really matters in the long run.

I've watched your other reviews with the V6 and you're selling the hybrid very well. I've reached the point in my life where I have other cars for the speed and fun, but for daily driving, surrounded by idiots, crappy roads and traffic, the things I want out of a daily are: 1. Silence 2. Isolation 3. Butter smooth ride 4. An excellent audio system to listen to Mozart, Beethoven, Chopin, Tchaikovsky, Zeppelin, and Metallica, among others, very loudly and clearly. 5. And, 35+mpg sounds very good.
Follow up: I FINALLY test drove an ES and I came away very impressed. They didn't have the hybrid, unfortunately. The V6 came across as adequately powered and smoooooth. The ride is very refined, smooth, and silent. I love how Lexus kept it simple for reliability. The standard sound system sounds good, unfortunately they didn't have a Mark Levinson equipped car for comparison. They were fortunate to have ONE 2021 and ONE 2022 ES at the dealership. I drove what they had. The materials seem top notch. Solid, and top notch. There aren't many cars for twice the price that are as good as this, in my opinion. My only gripe is the GUI. It's not that good in my opinion. Give me buttons laid out logically and I'd be happier. As is, it's an excellent car.
@@2006gtobob Don't know if you drove the '21, the '22 or both. The '21 GUI is just awful with the trackpad. Although the '22 still has it, they made the screen a touchscreen so you never ever have to touch the damn thing as long as you live (he said as a very conscious '22 owner). If you'd prefer a fully updated system with better menus, faster action and no trackpad at all, that's reportedly coming, probably in '23 (see the current NX for a preview of what it's like).
@@tonysterbenc I drove both. The 23 looks more promising as far as the interface, cup holders, etc goes. I will miss the clock, unless Lexus realizes its mistake concerning that and it stays.
@@2006gtobob The funny thing is, there's both a digital clock above the gauges and that analog clock near the screen, and when I want to know what time it is, my eyes always go to the analog clock.

Hmm...I have 2019 Lexus ES350 Base model, and everyone who has it will tell you that there is a problem with the sound system. For some reason it's designed to be front bias (also the Mark Levinson). Which means most of the sound comes from the front speakers. When you try to adjust the front/rear balance there is a point where it cuts off and sound is muted. There is almost no sound coming off the rear door speakers. There are no speakers in the back of rear passengers, only sub-woofer. I have never seen that in any car the I have owned.
If you still have access to the ES, go ahead and check it out.
I have the V6 model, gas mileage is awesome.On an avg 60mile trip at 70mph with no traffic, I'm getting 38-40Mpg.
The Dynamic cruise control is good, it works until you stop.
Lane assist works almost perfect.
So, yeah, pretty good car.
You do realise that is how its supposed to be? High end audio never has rear speakers or almost muted.

Those are incredible miles! Have you had to chnage the batteries yet? I just made a review on the 2015 ES300h comparing to the 2021 ES300h and the improvements are sublime 👌👌

Now 254k miles. Apart from replacing tires, brakes and rotors, no expensive repairs so far

Fantastic review and totally agree. I recently took an Uber in a brand new ES and was blown away by the interior, comfort and quietness. Perfect for where I live, Los Angeles, where you spend most of your time crawling in traffic. Definitely giving this a hard look when my 5 series lease is up.

Fully loaded Avalon quite comparable.Doesn't even need to be a Hybrid, but must be accompanied with both Apple & Android car play.
Had mine for 3000 miles now. Crawl through London North Circular peaceful. Love the audio. Seats fantastic. Matrix headlamps Good. (not for the state's) Euro Takumi spec avoids the bamboo trim opting for a glossy zebrano wood that isn't 80s mercedes looking. Electric recline on rear seats nice too. This will be a keeper. Rare sight in UK!
I bought a 2020 ES350 Ultra Luxury trim with all the options. Honestly, I considered the Hybrid but it came down to I wanted the extra power the V6 provided and the V6 is several hundred dollars cheaper without the need to ever change batteries. Honestly it comes down to personal preference and both are great cars!
The batteries don't have to be changed until about 300,000 miles. I promise the couple hundred you saved on the initial price doesn't outweigh the gas savings.

I have a 2013 es300h, and even though it’s the slowest car I’ve ever owned, I LOVE it. Comfortable and for long trips, still gets 35mpg combined on 10 year old batteries. 40mpg if in the low country like South Carolina. I love the wheel navigation it has for the UI. I’ve memorized where it needs to up down left or right to get to where I need to go without looking at the screen because it has tactile feed back when you’re moving the wheel.
I've never liked the ES line up of cars, ever! Now that I watched this quick video I am. As a daily all around car I could see myself enjoying one of these. (:

Lexus kills me because they make so much sense, but I can't get over the grill aside from the LC and LS implementations. Wish they had like a vanilla 2000-2005 grill option.
BTW recent convert to this channel. Doug's reviews just seem mundane after seeing geese's videos. Great camerawork and through breakdowns. You don't even have to like cars to enjoy this.
I think there's an aftermarket potential for replacing Toyota/Lexus grills with something that doesn't resemble a manta ray.
Nobody ever comments about the unique intro music if each video which captures the essence of each car and is the summary of the whole review in about 10 seconds.

At 9:50, counter your point, Lexus has came out and stated those are real bamboo, not plastic. They just polished the bamboo to that smoothness.
I think they fasten real bamboo to a plastic backing. That's how pretty much all automotive real-wood trim below the Rolls level is made. Not only lower in cost, but prevents splintering to meet crash safety standards.

I sat in this car at the autoshow in February 2020. I must say it was so nice and roomy inside for a tall person. It made me feel 'special' sitting inside it, like I finally arrived if I owned one.
You know this car is a great car when airports are using it as limousine fleet cars in the hybrid version. A testament to its reliability and performance. It was easy to fall in love with this car. It stood out from everything else in the luxury sedan category by far and at an amazingly affordable price point fully loaded.

I’m a Lexus apprentice have gotten to test drive a lot of new Lexus’s, have to say the es remains my favorite. Quietest interior smooth ride and I agree about the interior, just fantastic.
Still enjoying my 2010 ES. Starts every day and quietly gets me where I’m going. This looks like a nice upgrade...when they fix the electronics.
That happened for '22. Touchscreen.
The next gen lexus products like this ES will be next level. Can't wait for the redesigned NX and RX.

I drove even a 2003 ES300 and I was blown away by how smooth it was. I couldn't believe that type of car could be picked up for $4k. The engine and transmission felt like they were in a different room.
Agree with 99% of the review, except maybe his take on the hybrid’s 4cyl engine noise level. I’ve driven the hybrid and V6 back to back, and it was clear to me that the V6 is quieter and smoother. Also, during similar styles of driving, the 4cyl seemed to downshift more frequently and remained at higher rpms than the V6, compounding to the noise and feel differences between two. The engine characteristics were pretty dominant in the overall luxury driving experience of this car. To me, the V6 felt like it added a level of refinement to this car that no other entry level luxury cars could, whereas the 4cyl actually took something away from this car’s overall excellence in execution, to a point I wouldn’t consider it. In the end, I ended up getting a ‘19 ES350. But this is just my anecdotal opinion, and I recommend potential buyers to test drive both back to back, and see it for themselves. Finally, while I’m still amazed at how comfortable and luxurious this car is at its price point every time I drive it, I just want to share a few negatives from my ownership. The transmission is just a little bit jerky, but it could just be my car, or maybe it could use a programming update - I’m not sure. The gas gauge is overly conservative. Manual says 16.x gal, but I always only fill 12-13 gal when it says it’s empty. The reserve tank may be several gal, but it still reduces the range I can drive comfortably. I’m not an audio expert, and by no means I’m challenging the Goose’s technical analysis, but to my untrained ears, the ML audio sounds just-better-than-average. I would definitely not do without ML, but it’s not one of the highlights of this car, as the B&O system was in my previous’17 A4. Take a look at these in your test drives.
The hybrid drivetrain is more refined, especially in pure EV mode or cruising flat highway than the v6. The only reason to go V6 is if you live in hilly terrain and want more power.
I disagree, B&O are terrible overall sonically and are put in a bargin bin Ford. Keyword is untrained ears as you stated.
Valid comments, walking; thank you for sharing them. You're not the only one with that opinion about the sound of the hybrid version. As for the ML stereo, owner forums and review sites were lit up with bitter complaints from owners that the '19 ES stereos (base worse than ML) minimized the sound from the rear speakers to the point of nonexistence. Some owners who complained got a replacement rear amplifier that reportedly helped considerably, although others who complained were denied, and I think there was a running change on this during the 2020 model year. Meanwhile, try adjusting your fader 2 notches to the rear and setting Surround to Off. (Note that each medium - radio, USB, CD, etc. - needs all these settings changed separately.) Oddly, turning Surround off makes it sound more like surround. Why, I have no idea.

Anyone who is trying to bash this ES350 either version bcs is slow or not a performance car go and get performance one if thats what u want from a car. ES350 was never meant to be build for race tracks, it was designed for superior ride quality and luxury ride and Lexus did outstanding job with this car!
