  • Back out camping with the family, I head past the tree line to see how the gravel beds are looking since we last hounded here. However Benny couldn't make it this time and its a different feeling rockhounding and hunting chalcedony and agates on your own. I find a peaceful creek to wander up and relax as i find carnelian, agates, and on the road, a big rock I had to leave in place. All in all it was a great day out in nature in the always beautiful south east Queensland. I hope you find enjoyment in the rockhounding and relaxation, RnR haha!

    Heya!!! Just a little foot note, I left the last creek footage in there to show that yes, we do get skunked... haha! But it’s worth wetting the feet. Sometimes finding places you don’t find anything in, helps to cross them of your list. Happy and safe hounding times! Much much love!

      Yes that’s rad! If you ever come across dead pot plants, like woody established ones or even ones in the ground, the roots are amazing! The would make a great Gandalf style walking stick. You could probably even wedge rocks in there also. Keep an eye out if you haven’t yet. It’s pretty cool 🤓

    Awesome work! I could see your videos turned into a commercial TV show! It's not just the rocks that I love here it's all the kind, people who comment and encourage you and each other, I love reading through the comments. Now down to serious stuff. That big one, the really big one, apparently it also has metaphysical properties and should carry a general warning. Any who stumble across it will suffer anxiety, yearning and the dreaded insomnia until such time as the finder digs it up and drags it home! Once in the possession of the collector its aura swiftly changes and imbibes immediate contentment. The finder can easily be identified by their production of audible sighs of relief. p.s. I think it's time to organise a co-ordinated Rookie Rockhounding rain dance!

I did find a few small agates and jaspers, and a bit of serpentine. One piece had a HUGE Blue agate band in a cross shape in the host rock, going all the way through. I take a rock chisel with me out hunting. I would break a rock that size or sled it out. Pulled a few out that size and larger. I have a 250+ pound agate sitting on the porch we had to sled about 1/3 mile out of the creek. I smile every time I pass it 😊 and would happily do it again. 👊🏻 Happy Hunting

    Traitor, Traitor, Traitor.
    Left the rhyolite behind and that would have made a good specimen rock when cut and polished.
    Unfortunately you don't know what size the monster rock is, I would have taken it even if I spent the rest of the day getting it out, you can't leave rocks like that behind, often someone comes along with a hammer and takes some of the big pieces, leaving the rest wasted, broken and underground.
    Bad boy.

      @Rookie_Rockounding  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ah dammmmmmit! Back of the class again I’m guessing. One of these days I’m gonna make it back to the front row, one of these days...
      Man the rhyolite! 😖
      I started editing this one and when I saw the rhyolite I instantly regretted it! Just a beautiful beautiful piece. And the big guy, oh god the big guy! I had a family watching me and only a handful of tent pegs to use to dig around it. I couldn’t do it. Plus I thought people would be on my case for taking it from the road, but I guess some other rockhound would probably do it if they saw it. Damn, okay so I’m planning a camp trip just for those two pieces! Hahaha!
      I will retrieve them! Don’t you worry! One day Symon! One day!

      I'd bet my bottom dollar that was a chunk of stromatolite. The colour of it reminds me of Kambaba (but with more red, so better!). And I'm with you! I'd have dug that one out of the road too! My brother and I were just reminiscing yesterday about getting a stern talking to by a foreman on the highway expansion east of town. He was quite upset that we had dropped a couple multi-tonne boulders into their brand new ditch in pursuit of some amazing yellow fluorite. He said they were going to have to float an excavator in to clean up our mess! ahhhhh, the delinquency of youth...... But I can understand Jesse not wanting to get in trouble .... AGAIN.... so soon after the aboriginal artifact debachle.

    • @Rookie_Rockounding
      @Rookie_Rockounding  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Thirst Fast Hahahaha! Oh man, dude! Okay two things, I knew when I found that rhyolite, that you would be thinking stromatolites, and it very well could be, but I love that you called it!
      And secondly, yes! I was thinking straight after the artefact debacle, I didn’t want to ruffle any feathers haha!
      I am vowing now, as I live and breathe, if it is still there when we camp next, it is coming home. Home to papa! Hahaha!

      @symonsheppard5519 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rookie Rockhounding
      It would be very nice if you got the big boy home, I honestly don't think it is a stromatolite, just didn't look like any I've ever seen, I seriously hope I'm wrong but they are normally only found in Western Australia but there is nothing saying you can't find them anywhere else .
      You get that home and you are back at the front of the class.

    • @thirstfast1025
      @thirstfast1025 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@symonsheppard5519 Oh no, I didn't mean biggy chunk in the road, I meant that piece of "rhyolite" at about 3:00. They are quite frequently found near extensive extrusive basalts that were extruding into an ocean. Prior to the great oxegenation, these Hawai'i type formations would create habitable areas for cyanobacteria, creating what we now call 'oxygen oases'. Quite similar to how these types of features now facilitate coral reefs. So it makes sense to find stromatolites (fossil) associated with precambrian basalts. I wouldn't argue that it is more likely to find large stromatolite structures in Western Australia, as there is at least one if not several ophiolites out there. That is also where the currently living stromatolites occur (Shark Bay). The stratification of cherty material, the wavy pattern in it, and the phasic nature of deposition (which could not be varving, as this requires a freeze-thaw cycle) all suggest biosedimentation to me. One day he'll bring one to his new professor friends, and we'll know for sure!

    Glad you go slow and enjoy the nature. I am planning a trip to the west side of Lake Superior here in Minnesota USA to look for agates in the next few weeks, solo. I don’t film but I do sing and talk to myself too😁❤️

    Thank you. I've learned a lot about recognizing types of rocks. Can you share exactly what equipment you use for your video? The pictures are very clear. Thx for sharing your pretty mother nature world. I'm in Southern California by mines.

    • @Rookie_Rockounding
      @Rookie_Rockounding  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Cece! I was born in Southern California, in a place called Fullerton, but I don’t remember it really, we moved to Australia when I was 6. Thank you for your kind comment on the image quality! So as for the equipment I use for filming, and for editing, I’ll let you in on a little secret, but you can’t tell a soul haha! I use an IPhone 7... for filming and for editing. It takes some getting used to but for filming it’s pretty good, always make sure the camera lens is clean, try and make sure that where possible the video is not too shaky and nice light, and it does the tricks really. Also the wind, it can sometimes pick up the wind badly so it takes a bit of getting used to when talking. If it’s windy I usually just wait. Oh and always use it on landscape (on its side) mode. It makes for better viewing. 😁
      I hope that helps 👍👍👍

    Love watching you out exploring and seeing the area. So much better then here, 3 feet of snow, lows in the single farenheit digits at night. Yep can't wait for the Spring high waters to rearrange the gravel beds for rock hunting later in the Spring IF it ever gets here. Very nice treasures you found too. The very large one oh yeah so hard to leave one when it ends up being the size of a spare tire or larger and no way you move it!

      Oh man. Ughhhhh... what can I say brother. I’m just quietly thinking of you, your family and theirs. Man I’m so sorry. Loosing someone is so hard for our brains and hearts to understand. I hope you give yourself permission to mourn and feel and in time, although it never heals, I know from experience, the pain eases a bit. But neither should it heal completely, as that mate of yours deserves to be remembered and in remembering is acknowledging just how much greater your life is through having them enter it. I won’t say any more, other than I’m thinking of you mate.

      I have to give it to ya RR...taking/making videos is not as easy as it looks. You are good at what you do. Sounding clear, having clear footage, getting good angles and light into the agates, etc. AND, most of all, remembering to take video when you find something! It's not an easy task! I did take some video of my trip to Ocean Shores, WA but they did NOT turn out well. I did find me some carnelians tho! SCORE!!! Nothing huge...but nice😁 I will try and post a little something for ya when I can. Thanks for all you do. Makes me appreciate your videos even more. Till next Friday! 😉☀😎❤

    awesome video! Would you happen to know what just a basic smooth opaque white rock would be? the kind i could find just in my backyard, or just in the dirt pretty much anywhere, sometimes in rivers, i come across them all the time , they dont have a sparkly crystally look to them, and they have litle holes sometimes

    • @Rookie_Rockounding
      @Rookie_Rockounding  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you!!!!
      So I’m not too sure what it could be. You could search rough white minerals maybe and see if any of the images look like what you’re finding maybe. There’s really a lot of things it could be. Could be quartz in many of its different forms I’m thinking. But I hope you find what it is 😁 that’s how I got even more into the rock love. All the best and sorry I couldn’t help you better 😬

      Hi, if you can give a little more information I may be able too help.
      Pretty much everything is Quartz, it just depends how long it was cooked for and if it was cooked more than once.
      Milky Quartz ? that would be my first guess based upon heat you have said.

    • @TheDollPlace
      @TheDollPlace 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Symon Sheppard I found a lot of them out by a creek, they are all pretty much white, some a bit more translucent and others really opaque, I also notice a lot of them have hints of other colors like pink and yellows, they are ale very very smooth and rounded

    • @symonsheppard5519
      @symonsheppard5519 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TheDollPlace
      Really sounds like milky Quartz, they should show signs of little sparkles and they should be granular like sugar or flatter, not see through when held up against the sunlight , they will also be various shades of white often tinged with slight colour .
