    Two things you said that i agree with :
    Handle it long enough to get used to it. A couple minutes isn't enough.
    Wear gloves! I've never heard ANYBODY say that. I completely agree. Nothing cuts the session short faster than shock, pain, and blood. The snake just learned that biting works. Continuing the session minus the pain and blood is always better, and the snake learns that biting does not work.
    Way to go.

    0:45 I think she nailed getting the snake out. I've tamed up multiple jungle carpet pythons and helped others do the same, and grabbing them quickly out of their enclosure is what I recommend, so they don't have time to get stressed in the enclosure. Then handling them regularly, daily, teaches them that they aren't food and you aren't food either

    I don't use a hook for my 14months and 2 weeks young dude. It's like you said. I have him( my cal king )since he was 7 weeks. And they're pretty smart (as long as you don't smell like food) He never bit me or musked on me. I also scoop him up so I never come from above. And I handle him a lot, and he's just so chill and curious (good long tongflicks, and just crawls onto my glasses and on my arm and so on, also I pet him gently under his chin) no tention, he's very relaxed. In the Terra when he sees me comes to the glass. Not always for food, because I slide the door open and he just crawls onto my arm. And when he's not in the mood for handling he pushes with his body to say not now please. Snakes are so awesome. Now that he's in his adult enclosure and has UVB, he hangs out everywhere (in the plants, branche, burrows him in the reptibark, just explores). It's a mansion for him.. But he deserves it, Afther all its him that cured my depression, and bad habits. Also when I feed him it's only the tongues with the mouse that get in the Terra, never my hands. So when he sees the tongues he already knows he's getting fed.
    And also Clinr gives only a 3 for handling a cal king. That's too low. They're great if you put in the time and effort. They're gentle snakes. And imo better, or as good as a cornsnake. Mine deserves 5/5 for handling. I hand him to my grandma and he also doesn't bite or musk there. But he's a more relaxed with me because I'm the one that's always busy with him. And he never had a negative experience (that helped too)
    Actually reading snakes (like my friend theres too that have all kind off snakes) is my only talent I have weirdly enough. They're getting bit by there own snake and I'm not. And I see almost immediately what they did wrong.

      I agree I’ve had 3 different cal kings and all were awesome. Especially since it was 40+ years ago and all that were available were ones I caught myself 👍👍 Also had San Diego gopher snakes (total of 2) from age 10 in ‘64 and 1 in the 70s and they, while also very sweet, weren’t as enjoyable as my kings. The kings are so interactive and fun.

      I completely agree, I have used the information in this video with my female Kayuadi retic and she's gone from being a jumpy and nervous snake who hated being handled to a quiet, slow moving girl who is a joy to interact with. I made a video demonstrating this to show that it works.

    This was pretty helpful I'm a new snake owner because I got mine as a rescue she's sweet she doesn't mind being picked up but she doesn't love being handled but she's new n I'm still working with her so we're both getting use to each other. She's the first snake I handled. I did hear if your confident in picking up the snake it helps in how the snake reacts to you. I tried it n I don't think it made that much difference with mine personally. She still tried to snap at me n the first time I jumped but didn't pull away n she tried bout 3 more times n it became funny because she's tiny n she tried to fit my wrist in her mouth. Mind you her head is bout the size of a dime. The last time I held her she wrapped around my wrist n laid in my hand while I pet her so it was cool. Thnx for the info very helpful! Pretty cool experience.

    • @spoiledwitch82
      @spoiledwitch82 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ReachOutReptiles she's very tiny I don't think I can handle her with a hook. She's about 12 inches. The first time I used gloves but I had trouble grasping her n I didn't like it because my fingers are small n it was hard for me to grasp her. The second time I just scooped her up with bare hands because she got into striking position but once I went for it she kind of just chilled out n was looking at me like ok we're doing this lol. She's never struck me while getting her so I think that's a good sign. When she gets longer I probably will use a hook but right now she still fits in one palm. I did learn about the hook method but I feel in my case I'll have to wait a lil longer to use it. I really enjoyed your vid because everyone else says to look at the snakes language n you'll know and every snake is different but not many explain much about it. It usually only boils down to if your snake strikes or doesn't like it's ok to hold or are they defensive n that's it. This was pretty good.

    Hi Garrett, I have to say I think it's amazing what you're doing by preserving bloodlines and locales of dwarf and super dwarf retics. I hope to maybe emulate what you're doing in the uk some day. Anyway, I recently bought my first retic and I absolutely love the species, she was sold as a 62.5% superdwarf and I found out later that she has both jampea, Kalatoa and mainland genetics. The percentage isn't certain nor if I'm honest is the locales because it came to light that the person I bought her from wasn't the breeder, he wasn't able to tell me the exact date she was born either so beyond being a cb 19 dwarf retic I really don't know. She has the markings that are typical of the dwarf localities and she is still quite small for her age. She's grown approximately 30 to 40 cm since February and has practically doubled in weight. She was only being fed once every 10-14 days. I since put her feeds up to once a week but after seeing your video about feeding schedules I dropped it to 9 days. I recently put her back up to 7 daily feeds as she seemed to be extra hungry everytime I went near her viv. She's not remotely aggressive and I can get her out without a hook. But she still seems flighty and if she hasn't got a good grip with her tail she tends to panic. Will this pass with regular handling?
    Great video by the way, I never actually realized the purpose of hook training before watching this video. I am definitely going to invest in one.

She's only about 3 feet/1 lb so she's not huge and we're working with her, with some days no strikes no issues and other days she's rapid fire and she goes for the face/whoever is holding her.
    Currently I'm using a snake hook, looking to get her moving in her enclosure to get the brain thinking before we take her out of the enclosure, and some days I skip that step because she seems super calm and will snake hook scoop her up (coming out of a front load enclosure) and shell get me. Definitely try not to react if she bites but I will have to in some cases to avoid getting bit in the face since her strike zone is longer than my hand to face distance.

      My thought is maybe the enclosure is too big. The snake sees you coming from so far away you MUST be a predator. This automatically sets up a bad situation, which it must react to.

    • @elguapoalso6886
      @elguapoalso6886 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah my guess is it doesn't feel secure. A 8'x6' enclosure for a 6ft green anaconda is way too big imo. That size is more suitable for a very large more active snake like a 12ft + retic. I would maybe put up a divider and give it half that space. Either that or put hides in it, but if you don't put a big enough water bowl in the hide it will never use it. Husbandry is a bit more complicated than for a Burm or Retic as I'm sure you know. I used to own a green anaconda and to say it was sedentary would be an understatement. That thing sat in it's water dish almost 24/7 and would usually only come out to grab a rat. Very tame as well. I housed it in a 100 gal glass tank (back in the 90s nobody knew any better :D) and it was a total waste of money. I could've saved a lot of money and kept it in a 37 qt sterilite bin with a large water dish and it would've been fine for the first year. They seem to be slow growers compared to Retics and Burms in captivity. At present I have a 1 yr old female burm and she's already 6ft. My Anaconda was over a year old and quite a bit smaller when I sold it.
