  • Roothy, AKA John Rooth explains procedures to protect a 4x4 against corrosion. The key ingredient is lanolin.
Received from Scott Elms, owner of Rainbow Beach Under-body Car Wash: We do not use recycled water to wash vehicles. Roothy is welcome to see inside our operation at any time. (Roothy does not specify which car wash he is referring to in his statement.)

100% FRESH WATER CARWASH. Rainbow Beach Under-body Car Wash DOES NOT use recycled water to wash vehicles. At the end of your video, Roothy suggests NOT to use Underbody Car Washes such as the one at Rainbow Beach. While this is true of some less reputable car washes, this is absolutely not true of our carwash. In fact, because of the circulation of this type of falsehood, we offer a Fresh Water Guarantee (10 times your money back). I have contacted Roothy and offered for him to come and see inside our operation at any time without notice to set the record straight.
Thanks for the chance to clarify this Andrew.

@Thomas Sleigh with the exception of Andrew. He’s South African. Don’t get me wrong. He’s a pro. He’s probably forgotten more than I could ever learn about 4x4ing and over-landing. I just find his commentary a little repetitive sometimes for example the dual battery one. He’s got a very different style to others. Ronny Dahl on the other hand. He somehow brings you into the story. You feel he’s talking directly to you. And you feel you’re on the trip with him. Andrew... he’s got a reporter style. ✌🏻👍🏻

Lanolin is the best. When i worked in Darwin for the army at Robertson Barracks as a mechanical fitter, all the components that i rebuilt i had to coat with....you guessed it....Lanolin. Every single Australian army vehicle is coated with Lanolin underneath. Makes them last a lot longer in the bush. Great video Andrew! And good to see Roothy on your channel! Cheers boys!

Great to see Roothy sharing his expertise / experience with you Andrew. Lanolin is awesome and chainsaw bar oil can also be brushed on, under the vehicle. Quite tacky which is good. Recently saw this posted by a guy on the East coast of the USA where salt is used on snow covered roads. Just gotta make sure that surface is dry before applying lanolin or any other coating, otherwise you'll seal - in the moisture.

Lanolin has been catching on here in the USA quite a bit the last few years. Many years for those in the “know”. I have Fluid Filmed my Toyota FJ every spring and fall (bought new in 2011) and 8 years later (8 New England winters, always outside) looked almost new. Started the routine now with my 2018 4Runner.
I love that hand pump applicator, I’m going to have to try one of those as opposed to the cans or air hose compressor sprayer. Great video 👍🏻

His was the only one of 6 trucks which had no rust on the outside of the body so, his trucks were not replaced as frequently as those of the other drivers.

As a driveline corrosion preventative on mine sites vehicles, the utilization of chemically fortified lanoline, blended within penetrating oils with dense suspension properties, has been standard implementation for over 20 years, and constantly monitored to conforming standards. Very few corrosion issues when reapplied every 12 months. Applied using pressure system to ensure deep penetration within internal crevices, and Australian produced product. 👍👍🇦🇺

I've been using Lanotec for a few months now and it's fantastic stuff. It's been especially good for interior detailing. My 30yo Landcruiser's interior was badly faded and the cleaning products I was using weren't working, but a wipe over with lanolin brought out the original colours and it's stayed that way. The only downside to lanolin is the residue attracts dirt, so you have to be mindful of that.

There's a new product called xcp xpro rust inhibitor. I sprayed the underside of my rx with it and it kept it rust free through the last winter where here in the uk our loads are plastered in salt. Its a highly corrosive environment that eats older cars. This stuff works. There's also acf50 which I liberally spray over my bmw adventure bike. Its still pristine 4 years later as I treat it every two months. This will inhibit rust and even treat lightky rusted areas to restore them. Worth every penny. I have lannolin but xcp pro is better...it stays effective for months.
Lannolin is good for your skin too! As shooter I use it to lube my brass cartridge cases before resizing them. Its great stuff but the xcp is the dogs danglies bits for doing the underside of your truck.

Simple fact is that the manufacturers should galvanise the chassis to start with, Land Rover did it with the Perentie chassis and bulkhead and while it's a sacrificial coating that will eventually break down it does take a long time. Nothing to stop axle casings, swivels, hubs and all the small brackets receiving the same treatment, what would it add to the cost of a new vehicle to have a 25yr chassis warranty?

I ended up tackling rust too late in my vehicles life so I had to go a different route and use POR-15 with some major repairs to fix rot, the method shown here is much simpler and I wish I had known about it years ago. There is one problem though, I live in a very rural area and the unibody frame rails on my Jeep XJ were filled with mouse nesting material and debris which stayed wet and caused the rust to accelerate rapidly and cause rot. This method would not solve that problem, as the small rodents and debris would still have easy access to the holes in the frame rails and body. I ended up shooting every hollow crevice in the body and under body frame rails with expandable foam to fully seal those areas off from moisture and debris. For the climate I live in and the conditions I face it was the best option I feel. In warmer areas like the Southwest US and Australia the method in the video looks like it works well.

Years of UK struggle with Finigan's gloopy Waxoyl, useless self-clogging aerosol cans, self- destructing pump applicators and futile efforts to make it flow despite diluting with white spirits and heating the cans in hot water. It certainly didn't help on BL products in the 80's. Revelation however in finding another product used for preserving jet engine components "OCS 100" or similar that remained liquid and seemed to creep into gaps like the rather heavily eulogised Lanotec here (which I'd never heard of until today, but looks interesting) , but I`ve lost the details, as it worked so well in 1999 on the underside of a rust-free 1978 Range Rover I still have and a G Wagen kept for 12 years with no hint of rust.

Oh, sorry, my fault. I'm actually not familiar with australian wildlife here in Germany. Beside that, very good video! We have plenty of salt during the winter here on the roads and corrosion is quite an issue. For long term conservation TimeMAX is very common here. Most dealerships which are importing the Land Cruisers from the UAE prepare their vehiclese with that before delivering to their customers. I think for our purposes the Lanolin won't stick long enough to every part of the chassis.

On the 6th April a guy [ Uncle Fjester] uploads a video from MOAB showing Two Land Rovers one a new range rover sport and the other the short wheel base New Model Defender with various close up photos and videos showing the vehicle with an independent rear suspension and with airbags - so that confirms your previous comments from another video of yours that this will not bode well with individuals trying to modify their NEW Land Rover Defender vehicles for overland use

With the car polish bit, isn’t polish designed to strip a small layer of clear coat off to reveal a new fresh layer? Wouldn’t wax be a better alternative as its effectively like adding a temporary layer of protection?
