IM508 (with XP400 Pro) has the same vehicle coverage as IM608 (or maybe like 99.99%). But has just basic diagnostics (built on a 808), where IM608 is more like a full diag-tool. Guess it is even bi-directional (but not in IM508). As we only do keys, I am so glad that this simpler diag exist. A real Autel bonus, in my eyes. Nice to see any troubles, and decide don't whant to make a key or customer says go. We are not an auto-repair shop. They can come back later with a fixed car, if we don't like the faults.
I need a full diagnostic tool with capability to programme keys and remove things such as the dpf filter or egr valve from the ecu. Can wither the im508 or 608 do all these things?
Thanks for the comment sir, and just to add to your answer, its works very well with EUROPEAN, ASIAN, LATAM, CHINESE and North American cars as well. You can check the AUTEL webpage on the SUPPORT section to see all the coverage list.
Autel recently released the XP400 Pro that supposed to add capability to read 60 more types of chips than the XP400 can (along with addition of some accessory kit) , but Autel seemed to have removed the IC chip induction area from the XP400 Pro so it no longer can read /write IC chips as far as I know. Do you know why this happened? If the hardware feature was removed, surely the software to support that former capability must have been removed awhile back for legal reasons

Only on new cars, sometimes you will need to have passthru access, most used is VAG group. But in 99% you dont need the Passthru connection to do key programming.
I bought an ultra from these guys. Its no better at diagnosing cars than ms906 and thats a fact. The intelligent diagnostics function is turd. The auto vin is turd and never works. The reg by picture function tried 3 times and always puts the wrong reg in box after analysing the pic taken. The topology is turd. The functions it offers are mostly bullshit. Like Mercedes A180 battery reset. Message firm and Autel reply. Dear friend. We no support that function. So then I ask why is it an option under that car? Lots of bullshit in fairness. All aimed at getting us to buy it and then we cant change it because China dont honour our laws. I wont be going Autel route next year. £5000 and the tool is TURD
everything you mentioned can all be done with a far less expensive autel.... this is a poor representation....the scope/wireless 4 channel scope is what you're paying for and the fact the you can scope your can hi and can low wirelessly through the old port is an insane unique feature on its own.... its a powerful tool when you know how to use it. so many people use a scanner and perform poke and hope diagnostics when to properly you usually need to use a scope and or dmm to get a 100% definitive diagnosis.

I wonder why those items come with free updates. Does it need to be updated to work? So, this unit is functional only through the time of update?

Coding is when you need to give the eletronic control unit some parameters.
The PINCODE is used when we need to program keys in some brands.
