  • More people have been to the moon than to the ocean’s Twilight Zone. Why is it so hard to get there, and why do these scientists want to go?
    Experience intense, unique, and sometimes dangerous moments with scientists working in the field, as they explain first-hand the kinds of risks they take to find answers. There's so much more to being a scientist than being stuck in a lab. Watch every Friday for new episodes of Science in the Extremes.

    "There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man's fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call the Twilight Zone."
    *cue Twilight Zone theme*

    I wonder if the fish they capture 400 feet below the surface need to be given some type of special treatment when they are brought into the labs on the ship, if they want the fish to survive?

    • @lukealdridge2541
      @lukealdridge2541 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The diver's will have to bring containers down as the the fish are always being pressed together in those depths and their bodies have adapted to survive the immense pressure but their bodies hadn't adapted to the shallow depths so if they swam close to the surface they would turn to smoosh.

    • @lukealdridge2541
      @lukealdridge2541 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      the containers are pressurized every three meters so that the fish can get use to the decompression the of their bodies.

    • @keithdurant4570
      @keithdurant4570 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The container is full of water to it's sealed lid when the fish is captured in it. The pressure within the vessel should remain pretty close to the same all the way to the surface. If it is a plastic there will be a certain amount of stretching but so long as the lid remains sealed the water can't expand, however the amount of oxygen in that small a space of water can't be that high.
      If they have a hyperbaric chamber on board they could be opened in there to oxidize the water...just a thought.

      Woopa Geeks attract geeks, all these sciencey channels (seeker, vsauce, scishow, kurzgesagt etc.) have pretty much the same subscribers and commenters across the board. Not to mention the formula for having a highly liked (i.e. top of the list) comment is pretty much standard (the punny joke, etc.) It's understood and perfected by those same people through practice, so naturally you'll see them more often.

    Can't they just use underwater drones to go that deep? I'm sure I'm missing something but tasks observing terrain, collecting samples or even catching species could be carried out by robots, right?

  • @federicopulpito2988
    @federicopulpito2988 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    is it possible to send drones at those depths? if possible, why don't they just send drones to serch there?

      Wireless signals e.g. radio don't travel well underwater.

    • @CortezEspartaco2
      @CortezEspartaco2 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      bobbyofbrunei That's easy to circumvent by simply not making the drone wireless.

    • @bobbyofbrunei
      @bobbyofbrunei 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      James Rae then there is the issue of the wires, the longer the wire, the heavier it becomes, and then there is the issue of snagging it on rocks or other things in the water.

    • @CortezEspartaco2
      @CortezEspartaco2 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      bobbyofbrunei Research submarines almost all use wire for power and tubes for circulation, and those go much deeper than 400 ft.

    This refresh of the channel makes me long for the discovery channel, my entire life I have watched the discovery channel and though I gave up cable 10+ years ago it is one of, if not the only draw I have to getting a package again. I just have no desire for cable otherwise. I'm happy to rediscover this channel as the name change passed me by and I didn't like the name seeker so I haven't watched any content. Shout out to Amy, she is a peach and it looks like she has done some voice training. It's nothing compared to her getting excited while regaling encounters with astronaut's, but her voice is perfect for this.

    The narrator said the twilight zone is less visited than the moon? Do they mean less explored? Only a dozen people have walked on the moon and this video alone shows at least five divers including the camera person visiting the twilight zone in one dive. Maybe they're talking about time on the seabed vs time on the moon surface? Either way, I think maybe they mean the hadal zone or the abyssal zone. That's more believable.

    I have a question, do you need to decompress going down? Or can you go down decently fast to how long it takes to go up? I free dive and have to deal with pressure but I don’t understand it at such insane depths 🤯

    • @deangeorgopoulos4261
      @deangeorgopoulos4261 ปีที่แล้ว

      would it not be compressing as you go down? static pressure increases as you descend so you would want higher pressure in your air system so you could breathe in with ease as the hydrostatic pressure from the surrounding water would be pushing in on yourself, also super cool that you free dive, I want to try that one day
