Thank you so much for taking the time and effort to make such a detailed video. I am in the process of rebuilding my old 028AV after the saw shop told me it wasn't worth fixing. I have ran the video back many times to see and understand what you were doing/referring to. I am at the cleaning process now after the tear down and should start putting back together today. Thank you again for making the video so not so mechanically inclined folks like me can save a ton of money and keep our saws running.

Great video! VERY well done. Doing it this way with access to the rubber manifold going from the carb to the cylinder is MUCH easier and a good time to replace it AND the impulse line....they harden and crack with age.

I changed my piston and cylinder on my 028AV super, and didn’t have to remove all of those components, tear down the whole saw, and split the case. I guess you had to, because pieces of the piston had fallen into the crankcase. If the piston is intact, you don’t have to remove much. A couple of covers, the handle, the carb, and the cylinder, I also had to replace the rubber intake boot. Good job.

Herve" is there a place ( Ebay, amazon) or specific seller on that place you trust to buy parts for an Stihl 028 Super Av ? I see many, but also peoples comments scare me, about getting sub par parts. I have one in excellent shape, except it has scoring on the cylinder. I have taken out the plug, and am soaking it in oil to be sure it is well lubed before I try to crank it. a Local mechanic told me to do that, pour oil in the spark plug hole and leave it 2 or 3 days then pour it out and put the plug back in and crank it. It was my uncles, and he died, and left it to me. It had sat for quite awhile in his shop unused. So, I am doing that, and intend to try and get it running. it looks almost new, but still, I know it was used extensively before he got to the age he could not use it. Thanks for any help you can give.
That machine has now some time. Of course I recommend buying original parts from the dealer but sometimes, these parts are not available anymore and we have no choice than to buy "Chinese"
do all new clylinder head do we have to put treads in to faster to blocks?

Yes it will be very similar
what grease do you use when greasing after cleaning? Also I have the exact same chainsaw I am rebuilding, what do you use for cleaning? Thanks!
To clean any parts I always use diesel. To grease, I have used copper grease.

I had purchased this saw at a garage sale for 5$. So I don’t know the history of it or what had been done to it.
So after watching your video which I thought was really well done and to the point, I went out and tore the saw down, spent several hours cleaning all the muck off.
Saw had a scored piston and cylinder.
The reassembly went smooth but the new Cylinder and piston still didn’t solve the problem of fuel spitting back thru the carb causing it to run rough. Originally I had done a carb kit but that didn’t solve it. Then I saw the scored piston and thought that might fix it. So now I’m wondering what is left. Did someone maybe assemble the flywheel and forget the timing key?
What would be your best guess what is causing the spitting of fuel?
Before I tore it down I sprayed some brake fluid at the seal on the clutch side and it didn’t seem to cause the saw to stall but couldn’t get in to the flywheel side due to the starter cover.
I would appreciate any ideas you may have about what to check for.

If the chainsaw does not start, can be a piston, fuel or electric problem. If it start and dies it is a fuel problem. No problem with timing as the flywheel has only 1 position
The fuel spitting is a scarred cylinder. Pull it , and replace it and the piston. Your problem will be solved.

What happened that you nedded to replace the piston and cylinder just normal wear?
Not a normal wear. That machine does not belong to me. It have repaired it and this has been caused by not placing the air filter, resulting in a lot of dirt coming in.
