    Also, in most movies the zombies have visual/audio clues, even the fresh ones: cloudy eyes, yellow teeth, moaning, limping, etc. What if they just look the same (at the start), are silent and move normally, just slower than usual?

    When you start talking about guns and ammo, keep in mind that 1/3 of households in the U.S. have at least one gun. It isn't uncommon for gun owners to stock up on ammo when it goes on sale, as well. Police only account for a tiny percentage of the people in the U.S. who would have rapid and easy access to guns.

    I think a lot of things are overlooked when analyzing zombie situations.
    Armor would greatly decrease the infection rate just like thick clothing. Train to Busan had a scene where the protagonists wrapped newspapers around their arms to reduce the chances of being bitten. On the higher end, it could be like a suit of plate armor with modern materials like polycarbonate for the visor, a gas mask filter to protect from airborne virus, better steels, etc. In between, people could bend sheet metal to cover most of their body, but with exposed joints to reduce complexity and cost.
    The military also has a lot of things that would heavily sway it into their favor. Zombies can do basically nothing to a helicopter and a helicopter could get somewhat low altitude then fire at a horde with plenty of horizontal distance and right at head height, which would mean a slight downwards angle and lots of headshots. Armored vehicles are also pretty much immune to zombies and likely have rapid fire weapons in fixed mounts. For example, some MBTs have roof machine guns remotely controlled by the commander, which means you could get a similar downwards angle as the helicopter and recoil control is done by the mount. Even if the vehicle runs out of ammo, it could just go and run over the zombies just fine. Airburst explosives would be very effective on hordes because it sends thousands of fragments downwards at their heads.

      I recall in a zombie apocalypse MMO that it was mentioned under normal circumstances, biking armor to protect from abrasions and scratches would be enough, it’s just, well. Tanks, and spitter boys, and super strength and all that.

    • @brianwyters2150
      @brianwyters2150 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@kielbasamage Acid is actually a lot weaker than most people think. It'd really be quite simple to have bases to neutralize the acid (baking soda/ powder is most available to average people) or simply blast it off with something like a fire truck. Then there's the challenge of actually having the spit hit the target. I doubt zombies would be able to hit a helicopter that is several hundred feet up, while the helicopter could be very effective at that distance.
      Large tough zombies with super strength still don't sound particularly dangerous. Plenty of people hunt elephants with rifles just fine. Something like a mounted heavy machine gun firing rounds like .50 BMG or 12.7mm for the Russians should kill the tanky zombie just fine from a safe distance. If that fails somehow, then just throw explosives at it. Planes and helicopters can have dozens of explosive rockets in just a few rocket pods, each would kill the zombie, or damage it's limbs enough to neutralize it.
      It's very silly that in most depictions of zombies that the military gets rolled over when some ragtag survivors are able to fight their way through loads of zombies. If the zombies are as weak as they're typically depicted, where survivors can kill them, the military would have no problem. If the zombies were dangerous enough to wipe out the military, then the survivors wouldn't last long. It's just plot armor for the sake of the story.

    • @neurofiedyamato8763
      @neurofiedyamato8763 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@brianwyters2150 It should also be mentioned that even the most potent acids take several minutes to melt a chicken's drumstick. Chemical burns are pretty bad and even worse if it gets in your eyes. But I agree that acid's lethality gets overplayed way too much.
      In reality, patient 0 would easily be subdued before any zombie outbreak occurs. Police and paramedics have dealt with some crazy drug induced cannibalism before just fine. Usually the argument is when there is a hoard of zombies but how does it even get to that point? If it did, the civilian population and police would struggle to contain the outbreak BUT a lockdown would basically halt the outbreak. But I guess COVID is a perfect example of how most countries fail to enforce a lockdown.
      If we get the military involved, the situation resolves itself instantly.

    What plot hole I find hard to ignore in the classic Zombie movies is, that when a Zombie attacks a human, there only every are three outcomes:
    1. Zombie fails, gets killed, doesn't bite anyone
    2. Zombie bites, but gets killed. The bitten dumdum hides his infection until he himself is a zombie.
    3. Zombie totally wins and devours its victim.
    The point is, in case 1 we have zero remaining Zombies and in case 2 and 3 we have one remaining zombie. There is no way for the Zombie population to increase. A Zombie does not just bite a dude and then move on, unless it sees more survivors, that it attacks, in which case it will then be killed (I guess in theory it could run around, biting multiple people and then dying but I've never seen this happening in any movie).

      This assumes zombies feel a desire to consume. Most organisms that require a host only focus solely on "reproduction" aka spreading as much as possible. In both viruses and the real world creepy fungus scenario, there would be no reason for zombies to do anything EXCEPT infect as many other hosts as possible.

    • @tarille1043
      @tarille1043 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This would only be the case if the only transmission of the "Zombieness" is via bites. If it has alternate vectors (Which it would require to exist in the first place. It has to come from SOMEWHERE before there exists a zombie to bite someone) then it can continue to spread, with the general existence of zombies being this at best 1v1 exchange.
      Though, you can't disregard the potential for a dead zombie to be feasted upon by animals, thus infecting the animals (Depending on how the zombiness works, if animals can carry/become zombies)

    That whole thing about crossfit: While it IS true that someone doing crossfit is prolly in better shape than someone doing nothing: 1. It's very easy to become a crossfit trainer and doesn't require NEAR the training that becoming a certified personal trainer does and because of that combined with crossfit WOD's not being designed for the beginner, many people have been injured in the process of wanting to get healthier and a few have even died from rabdomialysis, when is when you break down your muscles so much they tear open releasing the proteins within into bloodstream (something that is extremely toxic and sometimes fatal). 2. On top of the chance of injury, it's been proven that those that try to work on everything at once like crossfit does (strength, muscle size, endurance and cardio) don't get results NEARLY as fast as those that just do one type of workup at a time and switch focuses everything 3 months or so.

    I'd say that the chrysillid from the XCOM games would be a somewhat "plausible" way of getting, but I think that Minecraft's would be easier to deal with. The difference is quite easy to see.
    XCOM: Enemy Unknown / Within - If a chrysillid (I'm probably butchering the name of this thing) kills a target directly, then the corpse will turn into a zombie, which will then hatch into a new chrysillid three turns after it rises, allowing exponential growth. Ironically enough, if a survivor of a chrysilid gets killed by any means other then the claws directly (poison, plasma rifle, sectopod, etc), then it won't turn into a zombie.
    Minecraft - If a zombie kills you, then you turn into a zombie. Thankfully, the zombies (barring a variant, the husk) burn in the daylight, making avoiding them a matter of surviving the night.
    If you decide to use the Counter:Side interpretation, then a corrupted object (CS's version of zombies) will kill you, but won't spread an infection. Living in an area that's under the Counterside effect though, is a different story. Treat it like you would radiation. In other words, stay away entirely.

    Something I like about the Left 4 Dead universe is the varying effects the rapid mutation of the Green Flu has on its hosts.
    The most dangerous mutation is not the one that makes Special Infected such as the Tank, Spitter, Boomer, or Witch; but it's the one that makes silent killers: the Carriers, which the original four Survivors happen to be.
    Outside of any injuries sustained during their escape, Carriers appear to be just normal, healthy people. No rabid behaviors, no drastic transformations, no detectable symptoms, but they asymptomatically carry the Green Flu like Mary Mallon carried typhoid. This makes Carriers the most dangerous vector for the virus, because while the other Infected expire before getting too far into a sparsely-populated rural area (seriously, wait around a bit and watch the zombies, they die after a while if you don't disturb them. Really nice attention to detail by Valve), a few Carriers could be the doom of any dense survivor camp they visit. This condition is especially insidious during first aid, in which if either party is a Carrier, then they will more than likely end up infecting the other.

    Another problem is that some zombies suddenly have improved hearing and smell,
    it's not like a virus could just "unlock magic secret powers", we don't have the physical structure to do such things, we can't just smell things from 100m or hear any small noise from far away, we don't have the proper ear or nose to do such things,
    and even if they weren't already dead, they still could die or become immobile by acting like they do, they would break their legs and tendons in the first week, and wouldn't be able to get as much energy as us by eating trash and blood, by the second week they would be lying on the ground in a perpetual agony

    The last of us infection would be the worst. Infection via spores in the air, and it doesn’t kill the host. The host loses control but the fungus keeps the bodies power, allowing for full power attacks and sprinting (not running, full out sprinting). Given time, they grow hard fungal armor that is resistant to bullets and even Evolve bile sacs and such that they can use/throw as weapons to spread infection. And to top it off, its based off of a real life fungus. The cordyceps fungus which basically does exactly what I described but to bugs.

    There is of course the aspect of one of the infected being in base camp. Even if stringent inspection efforts are mandatory in regards to bite and scratches there is still the possibility of it being airborne local to zombie population in zone then it's a matter of air filtration vs viral particles per volume of air vs maintenance of said filters for survival.

  • @nooneofimportance2110
    @nooneofimportance2110 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    To be honest I think the worst-case scenario would be the Trioxin zombies from Return of the Living Dead.
    It starts out an air born infection via chemical transmission, the transformation length varies depending on whether you're living or dead at the time of contact. Living creatures (NOTE: IT IS NOT LIMITED TO HUMANS!! It infects any and all animals, maybe even plants too) will take a few hours (2-8 hours, time is hard to judge in a movie) while the dead are almost instantly revived.
    After the initial airborne phase, the infection becomes transmissible through contact, a bite will turn a person within the hour while having a zombie grab your arm for a minute will cause you to turn over the course of several hours. Literally just touching one of the infected for long enough will infect you. Death of course causes reanimation within minutes.
    Here's the kicker, depending on how degraded the zombie is determines how fast it moves. They can be fast or slow, depending basically on how much of the zombie is still there.
    Here's the worst part though. They are virtually impossible to kill. Literally, head shots don't work, decapitation only blinds them, even total dismemberment only means that you have animated pieces of a zombie instead of a whole zombie. The only way to kill them is through total destruction of the body at the molecular level. What's worse is that burning them resets the infection to the airborne stage again, unless you burn them in an enclosed system, with no escape for the exhaust. So literally nukes would actually exacerbate the situation.
    Another hiccup is that trioxin zombies retain their intelligence, even after death.
    So, with all this in mind, the fact that the zombies are fast, can infect without needing to wound, are ridiculously hard to kill, and the most efficient ways to kill them can make the situation worse, on top of the fact that the transformation can be fast AND infection can be stealthy, I gotta say this would have to be the worst scenario.

    Skallagrim, while you have points with Firearms etc. It seems we are taking into account following rules from Geneva and Hague Conventions. I'm sure survivors hell even the government would start to use tactics that are banned in war. Anything to maximize destruction and eliminate transmission methods. Napalm etc. Also depending on the time of year and location, I don't know how much heat a zombie's body can produce, but if it isn't producing enough heat it can freeze over night and they may or may not stop zombification alone. I don't know if when they defrost if they come back or not.

  • @lordblack998

    I think the best way for dealing with zombies goes as follows:
    1: At all times, evade rather than engage unless completely necessary, drawing zombies away from you also counts as evading. Going around the threat lowers the chances of getting injured and potentially drawing more to your location and also saves precious time and resources.
    2: Wear relatively light but tough to tear clothing, motorcycle equipment and denim fabrics are ideal. With light clothing, you won't get fatigued as quickly, you'll be able to move faster and more quietly (important) and if zombies can't actually break the skin and exchange bodily fluids, you're pretty much safe.
    3: If you are going to engage zombies, use a blunt weapon with a reasonable amount of reach and weight. Forget aiming for the centre of mass, aim for the head and destroy the brain. Also blunt weapons will be easier to maintain and last longer than sharp ones. Forget using firearms, they're loud, require maintenance and ammunition and unless you have atleast professional training, you're unlikely to hit anything that matters.
    4: If you have a fortified area with a stockpile of necessary supplies, only go out if you need to get something and keep all entrances closed tight even if you're leaving for just a few minutes. The whole point of having somewhere safe to stay is keeping the threat out. Also if you're going to burn the bodies of zombies you have killed (also important, rotting flesh can cause various diseases and is generally unpleasant to be around), make sure you do it somewhere away from your base but still easy enough to get to if you know the area.

    I’d love to see a modern movie use the magical undeath trope, we see it allot in dnd. But I’d love to see a movie use the idea, some ancient curse, a lich, or something else magical causing the undeath. It would be interesting to see how that would be depicted in film, last time I remember a movie using magical undead was from Evil Dead, but think about how terrifying magical undead are. They never get tired, always move, some are intelligent enough to hunt humans down like pack animals. It would make the spread of undeath allot more terrifying if the undead were capable of somewhat intelligent thought to use to kill more humans

    Believe it or not there's a "zombie" military training exercise that's only use for an actual outbreak is the rage type. A couple of things that weren't mentioned in the video that could have an effect if the zombie outbreak occurred are things like the group of people with weapon training including armed gangs/other criminals, retired military/police, hunters, and gun enthusiasts. All are people that have a slightly better chance than average citizen using improvised weapons and or limited to no training. The next thing to affect an outbreak is mostly restricted to a blood/bodily fluid transmission and that is even at range blood splatter can land on you or an ally with melee much more likely to lead to infection not even from an open wound or bite. The last bit is how a zombie can be dangerous after it is killed by simply causing a survivor to fall/stumble (if the blood transmission counts toward infection then it would be difficult to avoid something from getting to your mouth because of automatic reflex beyond a hazmat suit)

    I think the Rage virus in 28 days Later might not be as bad in reality compared to the movie because if the infected have an uncontrollable urge to kill anything that moves, they would most likely attack each other as much as the uninfected & only infected injured would turn, a dead person wouldn't. Also they would be out in the open rather than hiding or trying to escape, so after the initial outbreak, they would mostly be targeting each other, which would bring the overall number of zombies down quite rapidly.

    on the topic of police in the video, Law Enforcement is not trained to aim for the head, they are taught to go center of mass and take down by volley fire until a dangerous target is neutralized, so in a situation where head shots are mandatory for putting down the undead, that percentage within law enforcement would be more on a person to person basis. the true saviors in a zombie apocalypse are the Competition handgun shooters, even amatures at it who compete will have a larger advantage over most in dealing with shooting a target the size of a melon at several feet. Remember folks guns aren't like in video games, the small subtle shakes of your hand mean a world of difference between hitting your target and hitting a unintended target hundreds of yards behind it.

    I've never understood why people feel the need to specify the 'type' of zombies, runners or not, etc. No matter if they're infected or undead, you would think they would be able to do what ever the host human could at first and that ability would deteriorate over time. A fresh zombie could probably run and its senses should be pretty much in tact - leave him out in the sun for a few days and the corneas get scratched and the limbs broken, sinuses dry up and tendons shorten?
    It makes the most sense that most would start as rage zombies and deteriorate to Romero type.

    I work for a LEO agency. I would not count on cops are being very useful, even if their accuracy was significantly higher. I once walked in on a bunch of them talking about their plan for a zombie outbreak. They decided to hole up in the jail. A defensible position, but without a food supply, an armory, and only two ways out that were easily blockaded from the outside...
    I though of a base decision tree some time ago for a zombie outbreak:
    Is the outbreak very recent? No -> Suicide.
    Are the zombies fast? Yes -> Suicide
    Do animals get zombified? Yes -> Suicide
    Are the zombies semi-intelligent? Yes -> Suicide
    If It's a recent outbreak of slow, stupid, human-only zombies, then gather your friends with low-tech survival skills and head for the hills to wait it out, while Nature eats all the mobile carrion.
