  • Easiest Scuba Pony Bottle Setup! (XS Scuba Pony Mount)
    Previously we have brought you a series of videos on Solo Diving. Solo DIvers carry a redundant gas system with them, and on today's show Lyell will show you and easy way to attach a rear mounted pony bottle to your main cylinder. (NOTE: Several times Lyell refers to the size of the mount in "millimeters", he actually meant "inches"...oops!) See below for link to purchase the XS Scuba Pony Mount online.

    Well done! A great complement to your series of videos on solo diving. Like you, we also prefer to mount the bottle with the tank valve facing upwards. Looking forward to more episodes.

    For upside down mounting you could make a tether with loops on the ends that are only large enough to go over both tank valves without the regulators on them. To keep the line from tangling on something, run it down inside of the main tank straps.
    If you made the tether the correct length, it would also act to correctly position the redundant tank while it took all the slack out of the line. Anyway that is what I will try unless you can think of a safety hazard with it. About any sort of durable cordage would work.
    There shouldn't be a lot of stress on it. I would make it out of something that you could cut under water if you really wanted to for some reason. I would think even 1/8" cord should do, but larger would be easier to braid loops into the ends. Try it and if you like, pass it on.

    Great video, very likable presentation and informative as well. I've used this system a couple of times, resp the pony tank upside down but had the same concerns of slipping through. What I've done tho is to take a strap, like the one that's attached at the top of many bcds for the tank neck and use it the same way for the upside down pony tank. Just thread the strap through the main tank strap and around the pony tank neck with an easy twist and the pony tank can't slip through any more. Done. Works perfect for me.
    Cheers and save diving.

      Thanks for watching @Notechis! Sounds like your upside down method would work well. We have used other methods to attach our redundant tank. Check out this video: The Best Scuba Pony Bottle Mount! (Shark Manufacturing Pony Bottle Bracket): th-cam.com/video/jE_2cAcTEYU/w-d-xo.html

    So for my public safety diving I have a unique setup. I have a traditional regulator, spg/comp and QD hose. This QD ends up inflating the dry suit. I then mount a 13cu pony on my back like you. However this pony has another QD hose that is run up to my Octo/Inflator. This way in an out of air situation for my main tank I can swap to my octo/inflator and still have air for my bcd. It’s a pretty slick setup while still retaining all the redundancy.

  • @DiveMonster
    @DiveMonster 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    If the regulator can´t be adjusted to left side, a reg-swivel may do the trick.

  • @DiveMonster
    @DiveMonster 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Like mentioned before; i like the system.... actually ordered it via your link. Hope I get it here in the Failippines before march, though.
    Hope the small commission buys you a beer for your good work you put into your channel.
    I actually plan to have it on the other side like a second octopus. My primary octopus hose runs across my chest to my left upper D-Ring, I would attach the pony octopus to the right waist D-Ring. Other than personal preferences, would you see any issue with that?

    • @everythingscuba
      @everythingscuba  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      One concern might be that if you are attaching your octo to your right hip, the octo hose might dangle and become an issue for you. One other alternative would be to wear your octo on a necklace that way it's easily accessible. Some divers (my buddy Josh for example), has a long hose on his main regulator and wraps the extra length around his neck. He wears his octo on a necklace on a 32 inch hose. This way if he needs to donate to another diver he hands off his main regulator after unwrapping it from himself and then he uses the octo which had been on a necklace in front of him. (I know this is how some cave and tech divers utilize the main regulator and octo also).

    • @DiveMonster
      @DiveMonster 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@everythingscuba Thanks for your answer, good food for thoughts!
      I did some 32 inch hose/necklace experiments a few years back, I am just not a not a fan of it.
      I just checked, my primary second stage is just above that D-Ring, when I have it dangling over my shoulder and just like 5 cm (2 inch, I guess) below that D-ring on my low right of my halcyon, when I let it dangle down my back (can´t say hip, I don´t have any). I guess if I use the same hose length for the reg on the pony bottle, it may work out fine.
      Anyway, if the stuff one day arrives in the Failippines, I will know more, and make certainly a video about it.

    Isn’t it much easier to just dive doubles?

    • @everythingscuba
      @everythingscuba  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Erik, doubles is certainly an option but to dive doubles you need to be specifically certified in that specialty. Also more expensive setup than a small pony bottle.

    • @SDScuba
      @SDScuba ปีที่แล้ว

      What makes doubles easier? This setup looks lighter and cheaper. I've never tried it but curious what would make doubles easier?

    • @erikhoffmann1252
      @erikhoffmann1252 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SDScuba a set of doubles will give you the same level of redundancy and safety as the setup in this video (even more safety perhaps because you’re using 2 high end regs). On top of that a set of doubles will give you much more flexible gas management. Find a cool nudi at the end of your 60 min dive? No problem stay a little longer to get a great shot. With a set of doubles you can easily do a 120min rec dive and still have the same safety and redundancy. Also a set of doubles will grow with you. Getting into TEC diving, manifold doubles. Serious wreck penetration, manifold doubles. Cave diving, manifold doubles. Sure, it’s going to be a bit heavier and a bit more expensive but you get incredibly much more for the money.

    • @SDScuba
      @SDScuba ปีที่แล้ว

      @@erikhoffmann1252 So nice if you want longer dives and plan on working towards tec. Not really easier but a solution that you can grow with. Sounds like a great option.
      How do you like your doubles for shore diving and surface swims? Does it get to be too much or is it not too bad?

    19 cubic foot is 538.02L that can't be right 😀

      I see so its the amount of air under pressure when its full 538.02L / 203Bar about 2.6L ... in UK we only state the amount of volume at 1ATM 12L, 7L, 3L etc

    I cant handle gear "dangling" from my body. I dont like my pony behind me as I cant monitor gas levels or hand of pony if required to another diver and can be a pain switching tanks on a moving boat. I sidemount my 19cu pony on the left hand side and run a bungy from middle hole in my backplate, around the valve assembly and clip off to the upper d ring, This pulls the pony into my side where it is streamlined and no chance of dragging through the sand or coral when I take photos or otherwise distracted. When i am horizontal, the bungy keeps the pony snug to my side and in line with my body. This reduces drag, allows me to hand off the pony to another diver, a button SPG allows me to monitor gas remaining by simply looking down and also keeps the reg out of the sand/bottom so I know its clean and ready to go at a moments notice.

    • @everythingscuba
      @everythingscuba  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      All good points Damien. Typically I’m
      Diving solo while taking photos or video so don’t have to worry about handing my tank to someone else. But using 30 inch hose and mini spg I can still monitor my tank pressure. I still find it easier to maneuver and position myself with a back mounted pony. But that’s the great thing about diving, we each get to choose what works best for us individually. Thanks for your comments!
