One could write a whole book, several books even, about perceptions and misconceptions about wheelchair uses. I think I understand how you feel. Sadly, some people see the chair instead of the person in the chair. Some people don't realize that the chair is a tool, NOT your identity. You are pursuing many of the same hopes and aspirations everyone else is. You keep doing you!
Yep, fellow Brittley here. Its weird, plain and simple. Person means well, I suspect a bit overwhelmed that you actually travel. Its not a normal reaction to someone saying they've been to Vegas. Everything you say is right. Its wearing... I know... But basically, you're right.
Actually replying to my own comment, its not just about being a wheelchair user. If we Brittleys looked like muscular athletic paralympians, that person might not have reacted in same way (though some would) Its often about perception of severity of disability as well.
