Idaho goat herder rotates goats for alternative weed control

  • Tim Linquist grew up on a cattle ranch and expected to continue the family business. When his father was forced to sell the ranch, Linquist had to reinvent himself. Inspired by his experience during college using goats as weed eaters, he bought 25 does and began to rent them out for brush control (often for fire prevention or noxious weed removal).
Business took off fast among farmers, ranchers, public land managers, homeowners, and even golf club managers looking for an alternative to weed eaters, mowers, and chemicals. After only a year, Linquist bought 225 more does.
Today “We Rent Goats” is a family business. All summer, Tim, his wife Lynda, and their 2 sons, follow the goats from fields to farms to overgrown backyards. Their territory includes Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, and Nevada. “Most of the summer we spend out away from home. We travel in a fifth wheel and we’re never home.”
Linquist doesn’t mind the itinerant lifestyle and spending so much time with his herd. “I mean I could sit out here and look at these goats all day… I love it, that’s why I do it.”

This was a nice change of pace from your usual features on accommodations and shelters. I've seen a few other businesses renting goats to take car of lawns instead of using a lawnmower. It's a good route to go if you're not interested in a manicured look for your landscape.

Very good idea! Much easier on the land than poison. Camels are also great weed eaters. They chow down on weeds that are poisonous to cattle.

Funny enough, when I was a child and we had to cut our grass, I asked my parents: "why don't we just get a sheep for pet? It'll cut our grass AND we can cuddle with it", parents thought i twas a horrible idea, in hindsight, I think I might've been on to something.

Goats not sheep. You were close Shelby Shum. Well actually depends on if you have tall weeds types may need & benefit from both. Sheep are grazers; they ramble slowly eating short plants close to the ground. Goats are browsers; they look for leaves, twigs, vines, and shrubs.

Interesting video. Reminds me of a pilot project the state railway company here in Austria did last year, where they used goats on railway embankments to control some invasive weeds.

I have a nursery where I use chickens to weed the pots full of landscaping plants. They do not eat any of the trees I propagate, just 99% of the weeds. Between the greens they eat from the nursery and the compost piles they scratch through for worms and bugs I get free eggs and free labor. Videos like this show how you can turn a need for labor into healthy whole foods we can eat.

    • @groundhogx2941

Oh wow.. the kekistanians have advanced to their farming/gardening era, and of course the whole “free labor” thing (wink wink) is the focal point of their strategy.

There are many other good aspects in doing this:
1- the meet produced by grass-eating chickens can protect from cancer
2- the chickens are fed for free
3- You fertilize the land at the same time

  • @debraprince4511

I am guessing the constantly changing pastures (so to speak) really helps keep the worms at bay. Do you ever have to worm them? How about minerals? What do they eat in winter? Do you copper bolus them? Just curious. I had a lovely herd of cashmere and Kiko goats for years but had to sell my herd when my husband died. Broke my already broken heart. I sure miss them. Goats are wonderful and addictive even when they are driving you crazy. Kidding season was better than Christmas, you never knew what you were going to get.

I wish there was less bureaucracy regarding using goats to control weeds or grass. We have a flea market in the area with a huge solar panel farm - which is a pain to mow. The market wanted to hire a 'goat team' to maintain the area - but were denied the use by the local government (I can't remember what the fuss was). I can't imagine any reasonable excuse for not allowing it. Ugh...government.

    I have two questions.
How far from the Treasure Valley do you travel with your goats ?
The cemetery at Oakley is overrun with kosia, Russian thistle and puncture vine.
No one takes care of this historic place anymore.
My family has a plot there and i pulled weeds last week until my back gave out.
I got our plot cleared, but it bothered ne that the whole place is such an overgrown mess.
    2nd question.
Can goats eat mature puncture vine ?
Im commenting partly out of frustration because the city of Oakley has stopped caring about the resting place of the pioneers who built that valley.
    Thanks for listening.
I love what you do !

Goats can contribute so much to a yield operation, if you have a good Aussie or Border Collie I think you can make a good living from it. The hard part is not getting attached to any of them, if you do then it’s hard.

  • @BillSmith-ut5li

Appears to me that the goats should have been brought in a lot earlier in the season. Maybe with some sheep might not have that on the ground as bad. Maybe a week or two after the rain. Here in Phoenix Arizona we have spring and monsoon. In the week or two after it's raining the heavy fire growth Moves In. I'm sure there's a similar situation at that location. Come on bureaucrats better planning.
