I recall the commercial back in the 80s showing the original Speak & Spell with the ET module. The original machine had a "Module Select" key where the new machine has the Volume key. You would plug in one of several modules, such as the ET one, and when you pressed the "Module Select" key, the machine would switch to the module from which it would start using words instead of the built-in word list. I never got any modules when I had a Speak & Spell, but I played with one that had a module in it that my cousin had. I recall it having the words "edit" and "edited," so it must have been a module that covered verbs.
