Bruce Hornsby is a great pianist and an even better person. Met him once at the soup kitchen my grandmother volunteered at and he couldn’t have been nicer and more down to earth
Hornsby is one of the great all-time pianists. He’s got such an identifiable style. He had a great solo career, and also played on hits by others, such as I Cant Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt.
Most people don't know that Bruce is a straight up virtuoso on piano and his live concerts are filled with improvisation and all sorts of twists and turns. He also toured with the Grateful Dead and has recorded with many jazz legends...incredible musician!
When Bruce stepped in to the Grateful Dead while they found a new keyboardist Jerry said the dude was hands down one of the most talented players he’d ever played with.
I love how everybody recognizes that Tupac sampled this. I knew this song first, so when Tupac sampled it, it was the opposite for me, I was like, hey I know this song, lol.
Hornsby is a mad talented improviser & scat singer. He was a touring member of the Grateful Dead after their 3rd key player (Brent Mydland died). The key line in his song, (imho), comes after (people say) 'That's just the way it is'... BUT DON"T YOU BELIEVE THEM!! We can change if we keep trying.
Bruce is one of the greatest pianists and songwriters of our time. He played over a hundred shows with the Grateful Dead in the late eighties and early nineties.
I never get tired of watching young people react to this song and realizing where it came from. I've read that when Bruce plays this song in concert, he introduces it as "a song by Tupac."
Bob Dylan said “Talent borrows, but genius steals.” God bless Tupac. It breaks my heart to think of all his unheard music. And Bruce has expressed his love and thanks… he appreciates the new audiences and also the royalty checks… Thank you so much for posting this, bro. Best wishes for your success! 🙏
This song was HUGE when it came out; it was everywhere, and it still sounds wonderful. You picked up on Tupac using this right away, Teez!!!! So often the case in Hip Hop; Tupac's song is an example of it working really really well.
This Bruce is THE MAN. He is as good of a person as he is a musician. You can tell by his lyrics. He really cares about other people. He has had an amazing career, that continues, fortunately, always on the edge. His short stint with the Grateful Dead brought him to a whole new audience, but of course WE (the heads) were already aware of him, thanks for sharing. Hey Marley, welcome.
I first heard this song as a little Canadian kid back in the 1980’s and really liked it, but wouldn’t have guessed at that time that several years later 2Pac would use it to make perhaps the greatest and most sobering rap song of all time. Really nice to hear this again!
This was #1 and it's about racial injustice , 1964 passed a law about discrimination . Bruce was a great piano player and changes was a great song too . Bruce got paid twice for one song
Check out Huey Lewis and the News, "If this is it" 'I want a new drug" "Heart and soul" "Do you believe in love?" "HIp to be square" "Stuck with you" "Jacob's ladder" "I know what i like" he was a friend of Bruce Hornsby and produced a song on that album "The long long race"
More than that. Huey played harmonica on Every Little Kiss, and sang background vocals on Down the Road Tonight, all of which were on this album. To thank Huey, Bruce wrote him a song, Jacob’s Ladder, which ended up on Huey’s third album, Fore. It ended up #1, just like The Way It Is did.
Loved the look on your face when you heard the first few chords and knew right away Tupac had sampled this. Both songs are great-but your reaction was terrific. Bruce can really light that piano up. A classic by both him and Tupac.
Just love this song by Bruce Hornsby! It was everywhere when it first came out. Now you’ve got me wanting to find all the TH-cam clips of him playing his wonderful piano!
Tupac, Changes. This is the original. All 88 keys. This is one of two songs of Bruce Hornsby & the Range Tupac sampled. Another guy who is a crazy piano virtuoso is basketball player/Coach Rick Carlisle! Both he and Bruce are Virginia guys, 6'5", who played basketball.
And the thing about both songs, The Way it Is and Changes is both of them have very deep meaning to their lyrics. Both are Excellent in their own right in their own genres.
I’ve loved this song since it was first released. I was just starting to discover music, and develop my own preferences in different musical genres. Still jealous that my older siblings had walkmans & stereos, and I had a hand-me-down beat up radio, that I’d pretty much have to put my ear right up against to hear anything. Yet it was one of the first songs that we all loved equally. Your puppy is adorable! 😍
Local guy to me! Good DUDE!!! Always been nice, always been supportive of the local scene! #757 I've bought him a beer, he's bought me a beer, and he couldn't tell you my name if his life depended on it. Thats just what good people do!
This is a masterpiece. I spent my whole first pregnancy listening to this album and it's stood the test of time. And the message is Awesome. Hi from Australia Marley ❤
Everything about this song is incredible. Love to see others enjoy a song familiar to them and see where the song they know originated from. This is cool because both tracks are legendary. Kudos my man.
I love that this song is an honest look at how some terrible things never change, but tupac took it and encouraged us to start making changes. Both songs are great. and got damnnn Bruce murders those keys
Jerry Garcia of The Grateful Dead discovered Bruce, and Bruce was actually playing keys for The Grateful Dead the final tour when Jerry passed away. Great talent!
You should check out some of Bruce Hornsby's live version of this song. Actually him and Ricky Skaggs have a bluegrass version that is awesome (blazing fast with all strings and Bruce on the piano)
I've been really into this song lately and now you reacted to it. I always loved Changes by 2Pac too. The jam band called Goose who you reacted to before covered this during their Peach fest concert thats what got me into this song
I saw Bruce in concert 🎵 at the Saratoga Mountain Winery venue in California. Wow 🤩 he blew me away with his improvisations on the keyboard. Marley is so cute 🥰. Your little princess has a new friend. Congrats 🎉🎈🍾 on the new place. 😎🙌🔥🔥🔥🎧🎶🎵-Patricia
This song is badass!! Some people dont realize that this song is about the Economic Opportunity Act and the Civil Rights Act of 1964!! While bruce will sings "Some things will Never Change.. Thats just the way it is".... Tupac said "We need to make some changes".... This song was also sampled by E-40 on the track titled "Things'll Never Change".... which is on his Hall of Game album!!
Knowing ‘music history’…. exactly my brotha! Kinda hilarious for me a musician, & o.g. @ this point. This came out in the heavy video era, after MJ, Prince, Whitney, Madonna & a ton of rock & r&b bands had lit that whole scene up. Video had become a big tool in sellin the music. Then here comes this cat, with a clear strong, yet simple voice, & simple setup of his band jammin on the tune in a room, & Bruce tearin up on the piano, sounding like a rock McCoy Tyner, the jazz legend who played wit John Coltrane & had an incredible career as a headline artist. (Check his record, Fly With The Wind). Bruce has even spoken of McCoy’s influence in interviews. Jazz sax player & Sting collaborator, Branford Marsalis has even featured Bruce on one of his records. So the song stood on its own, & got plenty mileage. I actually had not heard PAC’s Changes cause I wasn’t dialed into hip hop on that level. What I grabbed onto was mainly from videos. But as a musician, I can usually tell if a rap production song was sampled, because of the level of composition & musicianship. Example: Eminem’s Stan, which sampled British artist Dido. It was cool that he used her in his video. You might wanna check her original called, Thank You. which I heard from a soundtrack to a movie called Sliding Doors. There’s a whole other hook in hers because the portion for Em is just a loop of the verse. Anyway, cool reaction, good points. 👍🏾
This is why I love music. I am a 57 year old white male. I walked away from my career as a law enforcement officer in 2020. I could no longer stand with a profession that choose to remain silent while our country was in a state of unrest. We can all find common ground in music. Music bridges the gaps between generations. It spans the divides between races. There is something universal about it. Thank you for your channel. May I suggest Grass is Greener by St. Paul & The Broken Bones from the OurVinyl Sessions. Keep the music playing. We need it.

Some people think the message of this song is that things are just the way it is. But it’s really the opposite, some miss the “but don’t you believe them”. The song acknowledges several examples of bigotry, in a negative light, being unemployed, children not allowed access, racial discrimination for jobs, and being poor. Bruce was speaking the truth 4 decades ago-we still have so far to go.
Bruce Hornsby is a great pianist and an even better person. Met him once at the soup kitchen my grandmother volunteered at and he couldn’t have been nicer and more down to earth
❤❤❤❤❤
Lmao, everyone who only heard Tupac sample it has the same reaction in the first 10 seconds, it's golden.

This tune NEVER gets old.. incredible lyrics great song and his piano playing is just next level
They passed a law in 64 to give those who ain't got a little more.
But it only goes so far.
Tru dat.
Bruce Hornsby is actually talented and can make his own music.
written, sung and orchestrated by Bruce Hornsby 1986, a man of great talent!
When Bruce stepped in to the Grateful Dead while they found a new keyboardist Jerry said the dude was hands down one of the most talented players he’d ever played with.
And they wouldn't pur him on yhe permanentl payroll because they didn't want to kill him 😉
@@janna2245Nice one. You have to know the history of Grateful Dead pianists to appreciate that comment.

Oh... Trey Anastasio from Phish had well known pup named Marley. haha
Bruce is one of the greatest pianists and songwriters of our time. He played over a hundred shows with the Grateful Dead in the late eighties and early nineties.
One of the greatest songs of all time. He was doing some very technical piano work throughout a pop song. You don't usually see that.
So great and mandolin rain is another favorite 🥰
It sure is!!!
Glad you caught the lyric "ah but don't you believe them" most miss it and it's key
I never get tired of watching young people react to this song and realizing where it came from. I've read that when Bruce plays this song in concert, he introduces it as "a song by Tupac."
That's legit the fastest I've seen someone catch it. You got a damned ear, my man.

Indigo Girls- Shed your Skin, live at the Fillmore
Bruce Hornsby 's friend: Spike Lee. "The line on the color bar." Devastating
You ever seen the movie Marley and me Teez? It's about a dog.

Also played with The Grateful Dead 91'-92'
Good stuff!👍👍👍

When you read the lyrics, it becomes extremely obvious why Pac chose this song. It is about racial equality and civil rights.
