knowing that this was her last recorded song as well already makes it more heartbreaking
Anyway, it's a true story guys. Whoever disagrees with the ending, you cannot undo history. This was a choice made by both U-jin and Sim-deok (the real persona and not Lee Jong Suk or Shin Hye-sun as actors). The scriptwriters merely executed what happened in the past. But this short drama was really heartwarming, tragic, but realistic.
The setting was between 1890-1926 (1926 was the year they committed suicide), at that time pressure coming from families and society were overwhelming for a person to bear. I guess we can never justify taking one's own life, but who are we to judge? Emotional quotient at that time was probably as weak as their intelligent quotient. But I really enjoyed this drama despite the tragic ending!
as i was reviewing all the comments here, there was only one emotion .. pity, love and understanding, i have just watched it last night October 17, 2019..i have to searched google for an answer and curiosity wise, it was uploaded by kissasian 2018..The story was really tragic, but the summary written at kissasian he was having children, my parents were born 1925 and 1926 and me 1953, but happened to see the trailer in one of group who loves korean drama..because i saw Lee joong suk i happened to watch it at one sitting..i also felt sad and curious that is why i came to see all these comments at you tube site, but still, i was searching more about U jin and Sim Deok, but i can't find more.
It is a beautifully made drama. Lee Jong Suk portrayal of the main male lead is superb.

When I watched the drama, I knew this is familiar that's why I searched for this song. Only to find out that this was the exact tune which my grandmother used to sing to me as a lullaby. I remember in my childhood that Whenever I'm sad, I used to humm this song. But I can only remember certain parts of it.
Now that I found out this missing trace of my childhood, I learned the true meaning and story behind this song. Despite of the eerie vibe it is giving to others; for me, this song is so tracigally beautiful.

The opera singer and the producer/manager were having an affair with the producer being married, when the scandal happened it was chaos so both the pro and the singer road a ship and committed suicide together. People were shocked and intreged and started to listen to this song

After watching "Hymn of Death" I searched Sim-deok (RIP) song here in TH-cam & played it, but I stop in 1.07 mins, there's a crack in recording which makes me give goose bump, I just imagined the real life story of U-jin & Sim-deok how they ended up giving up their lives. To be honest from Episode 2 to last I couldn't control my eyes in crying, my heart felt undying pain, I felt the love they feel from each other, the longing, the missing, the cries everytime they apart & the pure love they shared, death was their choice, their choice to live. Their love story was ended tragically and find their rest in each other's hand.

so i came here after watched Hymn of Death drama ,Lee Jongsuk and Shin Hyesun really great actor and actress .they bring so much sadness to this drama,i was so freakin scared when they want to jump off the ship.
i know too much drama on that drama,but i'm 1000000% sure that the real story of Sim Deok and Woo Jin is more dramatic and tragic,because it happened under unstabil condition time and place..

I watched Hymn of Death a while ago, but coming back to this. I can still feel the longing and despair for release. I hope their souls found each other in the darkness. Such a sad yet moving story.
Their love and trust in each other was certainly beyond all the earthly value. . Maybe the cold sea into which they plunged must have gotten warm with their tears.

I am here after watching the series. I'm crying while listening to this.
they suffered so much in their own ways.. the only thing that helped them was the love they felt for each other and probably they got so attached to this good because all other aspects disappointed them. the historical context certainly affected even more the decision they made. I know in dramas they don’t mention how it all happened (because there’s no way to know the smallest details) and add things, but I wonder how heavy and intense their lives were in real life and then, maybe in one way or another, the drama can pass the intensity of the feelings that permeated both of them. I can hear the lament and I shiver with that song. I would like to read kim ujin poems abd also having access to the documents that are placed at the end of the episodes...

This is actually a waltz composed by Ion Ivanovici in 1880, and is one of the most famous Romanian tunes in the world. The song has many variations throughout the piece, reminiscent of the music of Johann Strauss. Through the Viennese style variations, there is still a distinct Slavic style. In the United States, it is frequently referred to as "The Anniversary Song",a title given by Al Jolson when he and Saul Chaplin released an adaptation of the song in 1946.
The melody of "Waves of the Danube" was used in what is regarded as Korea's first popular song, "In Praise of Death" by Yun Sim-deok recorded in 1926. The song was recorded in Osaka, where she met and fell in love with a Korean married man. The two boarded a steamship returning to Korea, but ended their lives by jumping into the sea.

I try to find this original song after watched the Drama by Lee Jong Suk and Shin Hye Sun.. Tragic love story but I love it as a literature fans.. Besides tragic, they have a beautiful minds and souls as Joseon's citizen.. Who would be a big people as author and big singer in that era under Japan otoritism? I believe they had a big soul to be a part of that Era. Love their love and life story..

Like many already commenting, I'm here after watching the Hymn of Death Kdrama. Thank you for posting this original recording. Such a tragic story. While Shin Hye-sun protrayed Yum Sim-deok so beautifully, I can hear so much sorrow and restlessness in the real voice of Yun Sim-deok, it gives me chills. Her and Kim U-jin's death is such a tragic loss, not only for Korea but also the world. May they rest in peace by each other's side for eternity.

I watched the drama and i am crying now
We had a similar story in my country a few weeks ago, a girl and a boy loved each other but their families didn't agree for them to be together, after so many years they still didn't change their minds so both of them jumped into the river and ended their lives together, when their bodies were found they were still holding each other's hands.
