  • A brief overview of Jewish history from the end of the Bar Kochba revolt in the 130s through the development of the diaspora community in Babylonia and the compilation of the Talmud. Part IV of the I Survived Jewish History series at Young Israel of Lawrence-Cedarhurst.
This video is scheduled to premiere with a live chat with Dr. Abramson on Monday, March 2 at 9PM EST. The chat will be moderated to remove any intellectual vandals who might seek to disrupt the discussion. An advance viewing version of this lecture (unedited, including the cheesy jokes and tangential asides) is available to channel members here: • Origins of the Talmud ... @@gmau3945 Probabily is offensive to read this about a saviour. But the same was written about all jews who violated the Law of Moses in a similar way as Jesus. Try to remember, for jews Jesus was only another 'miracle worker' in a country governed by the romans...then, they were killed and persecuted in the name of a person they did not even know...By the way: such a domain was described by people who experienced clinical death. Read the first book of dr. Eben Alexander, for example..

As far as I understand, the Jerusalem Talmud is shorter because it was never completed due to the 4th century persecutions of Gallus and Ursicinus that devastated the small remnant of Jewish presence in Galilee. The surviving sages joined the rabbis in Babylonia and together closed the Babylonian Talmud, which is the 'standard Talmud' so to speak.

A treasure trove of knowledge & insights as usual. the final few minutes were astonishing to a non-Jew: learning about the Jewish tradition of associating the introduction of the alphabet at age three with the fun activity of finger lickin' honey was amazing. An extraordinary foreshadowing of some modern pedagogical techniques (multi-sensory learning & reinforcement). Thank you.

Thanks for the lecture I am interested in whether the Talmud has gone under things like source criticism , textual criticism or the other criticism
How much do the early manuscripts of the Talmud line up with the Talmud of today
I know when reading the Talmud for myself I had to look up some historical things as what is that !
Did the Talmud borrow from any other literature or even the mishnah.
As being a scholar you must be familiar with historical critical analysis as you mentioned that some scholars are studying Persian to further understand the Talmud
I am also interested in how the talmud got from the manuscripts to its current book form

Innocent means someone that doesn´t know, or in legal procedures someone who is not related to some fact, it doesnt mean not guilty. Roman law tends to declare a legal truth, so when theres no proof against the culpirt the judge only states so, and when some new proof appears in favour of the culprit the sentrences goes as the previous facts have vanished. Saint also means to impose a contract or pact (sanction), and has nothing to do with being pure or obedient (comes from roman god Sancus), so res sanctae was appart from public propierty because it was offered to some god.

Why not make a completely vernacular Talmud, which can be comprehended in the world's major languages of English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Greek/Latin(scholar languages)? If there are things in the Talmud, which could cause controversy, then they can be civilly discussed and debated. The Christian Bible has been translated into the vernacular for centuries, which has popularized Christianity. The vernacular translations of the Christian Bible was a result of the reformation. Couldn't Judaism have a similar reformation, though, pray, less violent than the Christian one? Post Script: I don't consider the Soncino edition authoritative enough.

The tree of life is US ! All of US! And to have life ETERNAL you have to give give give to your neighbor and love him her like your self. But people are completely incapable to understand or process any of what i am saying. Cause this world has turned all the laws upside down to serve an EXTERNAL God. we are all doomed ... we do not even know how to love our selves... and no one loves their neighbor as themselves ... we are ALL DOOMED! This world is beyond repair.
Life is cheap and undervalued.. you only need one commandment : LOVE YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART AND LOVE ONE ANOTHER! Now look around you what do you see? Lost souls everywhere.
615 laws my goodness .. what utter prison cells what utter devoidness of any instincts or inspiration what chocked existence what rotary existence without any kind of IMAGINATION! What utter slavery and suppression of the expression of life ITSELF! No change no progress POSSIBLE under such conditions! I really hope when i served my time here on this prison planet that my soul gets destroyed never having to live through this trauma again of being incarcerated with billions of other souls all thinking they know it all , all wanting to dominate one another , all choking on themselves and their foul deeds against life itself!

Can you please explain the validity of the Talmud or any oral law according to Sefer Joshua chapter 8, verse 32 to 35 ?
If you can't, please take it out of your cannon and stop calling Talmudic Rabbinism Judaism as it paints non-talmudic Semites in a bad light.

I think you have this channel confused with something else. Google "people who are in charge of the canon" or "support groups for non-Talmudic Semites."

So you then confirm that you willingly avoid answering the question regarding your own canon (Joshua 8:32-35) stating that the concept of an oral law is invalid. You will have to answer to this one day and it is hoped that you find the truth.

Are the five loves not common in a way?
      1 Samuel 21:4-5
      4. And the priest answered David, and said, There is no common bread under mine hand, but there is hallowed bread; if the young men have kept themselves at least from women. 5. And David answered the priest, and said unto him, Of a truth women have been kept from us about these three days, since I came out, and the vessels of the young men are holy, and the bread is in a manner common, yea, though it were sanctified this day in the vessel.
      1 Samuel 21:13
And he changed his behavior before them, and PRETENDED himself to be mad in their hands, and marked on the doors of the gate and let his spittle fall down on his beard.

I would listen to the smartest man to ever live. Shlomo king Solomon in Ecclesiastes he says to beware of the men that make books about books that see no end.. Now i know what he was talking about yikes and woe to the Orthodox jews and sages...this is coming from a gentile that loves jews that love the CREATOR and that only study the real TORAH aka the 5 books of Moses and the prophets and the psalms.
