The inventor is smarter than his education level. I make this statement because his submarine (a vary complex system and sub-systems) works. His country should help this young man to develop and use his intellect to it full potential while not letting it go to waste.

This man has more brains than 99% of the rest of the world's college graduates.
Count the number of people who can build a submarine, and he would be among the most experienced. Why? most kids these days need someone to design a submarine FOR them and then they build it.

Building a submarine requires quite a few technical skills, so this young man is a natural creative. Those around him would do well to encourage him to continue to be creative, not just become another factory or office worker plodding off to work just to make money. Life can be a creative adventure if one follows one's heart.
I'd love to see a submarine upgrade with underwater camera & lights. It would be really interesting for him to be able to see the underwater world, inspect underwater cables & pipes, and maybe find valuables that have sunk to the bottom. There's a whole other world beneath the waves, with its own living things and a story to tell.
Nice work Mr. Xiangli! And stay safe as you explore the underwater world.

He said he never learned anything. That's wrong, else he wouldn't have been able to build this. He should've said that he never went to high-school seriously that's about it. However he'll lack what it takes to make sound planning for some chain montage into a Business Plan. He should either go to an administrative school, or to a high-tech scholl for at least a couple of years, then after hire real high-graded engineers who will be able to put his designs and creativeness into a production context. Hopefully he registered a patent...

ok that was only a question of semantics then. Still, as stated in the rest of my message, IMHO he should go to some school so as to learn how to organize and structure thoughts, or at least manage skills that are required for going further with such endeavor. But would it be possible for him in the Chinese Regime's context, if not for only one or two unique models that could be funded by individuals like drug cartels and such? Unfortunately, personally I really doubt... But we'll see.

DelireWeb He got a free offer from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications after he made the show in CCTV (Chinese central TV program), and studied as part time student in mechanical engineering, but he could not pass calculus and fundamental physics courses and cannot spare too much time in the evenings and still had to work in the daytime. In 2010 he quit and continued his normal life in Beijing as a technician. He was famous but he did this submarine purely for fun. He wanted to show he can use his little saving and a bunch of scraps metal to make his dream real, but not a dream to get a degree and design a supersonic assault submarine then sell to navy. He was not the only one, if you google "Chinese farmers strange inventions", you can find all kinds of robots submarines planes or even UFOs. There are many TV shows in China for such kind of purely recycle material based inventions. farmers can go show their stuff, draw attentions for the public on recycling and poverty. I still remembered an father did a 1.5 meter high robots for his son who got a cancer and successfully raised a 1.5 million RMB fund through the TV show for his son treatment. I am from China, my father is a worker earn 600 USD a month same as him only got primary education. My mom is same and even without a job. I can still got a scholarship and studied in States and then work in Singapore. There are many ways for different lives. Colleague degrees can also kill the innovations as the text books are almost the same here and there and prevent us learning from errors or failures.

Well he only had a fifth grade education. You can't expect anyone to pass college calculus and physics with a fifth grade education plus years not spent on education.

i like his design, it looks like a military sub, the only thing about these is if it some how died underwater , it would be impossible to open the door to get out, i would almost make an airtight inward swinging door so at least if i was trapped underwater, i could just open the door and flood the inside of my sub , then swim back to the surface

While we all watch The Kardasians. Kudos to this guy, it's people like him that have pushed the boundaries for humanity & i'm guessing that even with only a 5th grade education he knows the Earth wasn't "Created" in 6 days less than 10,000 yrs ago.

He’s not an inventor he just made a submarine using well established technology.

Pure initiative! Hard work to realize a dream! Learning about buoyancy and hydrodynamics! And then the GUTS to get inside the system and test it. What are many ultra rich putting into their mega yachts? Either viewing ports or submarine docks with a sub attached. Well done!
Think 'Turtle, Hunley, Holland, then eventually the NR1' in Naval Submarine Force Museum in Groton, Connecticut. Pretty cool!
