- I used the Mesh to Metahuman Unreal 5 plugin to turn a few of the TF2 Mercs into photo real versions of themselves. Work for Meet the Engineer is underway!

There are a few limitations with this process. Most notably the teeth model does not like the exaggerated stylized features and has a tendency to clip through the upper lip. There are also limited clothing, skin types and hairstyles so I chose the closest I could find. This could all be fixed by exporting from Unreal to a 3D suite and editing it from there.
Next time I would also edit the heads a bit more to reduce some errors, like the Heavy whos lip curls too much in neutral pose, and giving the eyes textures so the AI feature detector has an easier time.

This reminds me of the movie The Adventures of Tintin. They keep the shape of the character's faces but they made it realistic like having strands of hair and skin pores.

The Medic looks more like Jerma than the Scout. I think they did it wrong, in normal TF2, it's obviously the scout but in this they changed it too much and now it doesn't look like Jerma.
Most of these feel like they'd fit right in to Half Life Alyx's realistic-but-slightly-exaggerated style.

These models are really good looking. Fantastic job.
I think some of the "weirdness" comes from the fact that we are used to see them with accessories and clothes. Soldier's eyes are almost always covered by his helmet. Demoman has an eye patch. Spy is presentable without his mask, but then he looks like a generic refined guy, however when he has his ski mask, it's unmistakably Spy. Heavy is the one that's most often seen head naked. Medic has his round glasses. Sniper has tinted glasses, and his default hat is forever associated with his character.
This is creepy looking because they look reasonably real like someone you'd see in a store, while still looking just like how they do in game
Honestly, demoman looked the best in this one.

Reminds me of the 3D-animated Tintin movie, especially with Sniper. Just stylised enough to look cartoony and avoid falling into the uncanny valley.

There is something so off about Sniper that I can't pinpoint but Heavy is literally 100% accurate. Like that's a realistic Heavy that manages to not look uncanny as hell.
Sniper somewhat looks like his age here (he's in his mid-20s as of latest issue of the comic btw.)

Tbh I think Emesis could have done great in some film festivals if it didn't rely so much on knowing TF2. Really if you took all the TF2 lore out of it and swapped in something original, the film wouldn't have been any different and could have stood on its own two legs and anyone could've enjoyed it. But then unfortunately it might not have had as much attention as it got.

@@Jofoyo I get where you're coming from but not really. The TF2 aspect plays a HUGE role. The respawn machine, the gravel war, the brothers and even the mercinaries relationships play a huge part. It would've been way different if it had new characters, you'd have to establish your own world where TF2 aleardy had its world established.
@@creativecipher That's my point, they totally could have established their own world and it'd have had been less of a niche film and consumed by larger audiences. I disagree and don't find the TF2 lore very relevant to the actual PLOT of the film. The respawn machine, yeah it's supposed to be a justification for the game mechanics, but it'd still be relevant outside of such, since its creation is justified by the war. In terms of world building things like the gravel wars, those easily could've been substituted for something similar but still distant and the film would remain as is, it'd just be in a different context.
The film itself also does a great job establishing character relationships on its own and think they're a p big departure from TF2 as well, I think anyone watching would understand them even if they hadn't digested anything TF2 before. The main thing that did remain is the character archetypes but those are abstract ideas to begin with.
Emisis Blue is a standalone movie.

Yeah I noticed. There's nothing you can do to fix it inside of MHC afaik, has to be exported and sculpted externally.
@@Jofoyo Yeah, it's fine. It's more noticeable through the animations, but otherwise the model was fine. There's also the fact that you used stock animations to test the models, so the collisions in the preview were highly visible due to the animations not compensating for the big cartoonish buck tooth face. So it's really not a problem you had control over.

I want these ported to source 2, along with a newfangled J.C Leyendecker shader renderer, with them wearing detailed uniforms.
Somehow Sniper always felt like a Dishonored partisan, with the face-type of having a sharp chin and two side-ways standing ears from his head.

That sounds unlikely as that requires knowledge in 3D modelling, which I'm not sure this creator possesses. Metahuman is easy enough to use if you want to create a realistic HUMAN character.
the creator is a 3d artist so yes they’re very much capable. it’s just substantially more labour as mvm robots require actual modelling + uv and texture work + rigging
