Welcome to Brooklyn’s Corner. Today we’re going to give you some awesome facts about a breed that’s near and dear to my heart because well, if you can’t tell from my profile pick, I’m a chocolate lab!
Labrador Retriever, or just Labrador, is the most popular breed in the US and many other countries. You would be interested to know, though, that the breed is not originally from Labrador, the province in Canada. Nor did it develop there. The earliest description of a variety of dogs that resembled the modern Labrador is from Newfoundland, Canada.

This was a variety of working dog called the St John’s water dog, very common in the early 1800s, when some specimens were imported into England by dog breeding buffs there. The St John’s water dog was a medium-sized black dog with close hair, used mainly by the fishermen to retrieve fish, pull boats through icy water and for other tasks that involved swimming.
The English found that the dog also served as an excellent retriever when used in hunting for birds. By 1870, the name Labrador Retriever seems to have become common in England - the name stuck because these dogs had been seen being used in the Labrador Sea. Across the Atlantic in Canada, the water dog gradually became extinct because of a high dog tax to protect sheep and strict quarantine policies in England, which prevented further import. But, the core that had been brought to England originally had been allowed to breed, and through further cross breeding with other retrievers, the modern Labrador breed was established by the 1880s. Thankfully, this interbreeding was stopped by law before some of the key features of the original breed could be lost. Originally, only black Labradors were considered acceptable, and yellow or chocolate ones were culled. This changed gradually, and by the early 1900s, non-black varieties had become popular too. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1917.
The height of an adult Labrador Retriever is generally between 22 and 24 inches. The male’s weight is between 65 and 80 pounds, and the female’s weight between 55 and 70 pounds. It has a muscular body, covered with a short dense coat. The colors seen generally are black, chocolate and various shades of yellow. The coat also has a slightly oily texture and is water-resistant. Another set of features that make it good for water-related tasks are the webbed toes. Its head has a powerful jaw, a medium-length muzzle and slightly pronounced eyebrows.
Grooming: A Labrador is fairly easy to care for. A weekly brush and an occasional bath should keep it clean and tidy. Shedding is generally twice a year, but it can vary across individuals. Its nails tend to grow fast, so regular trimming using clippers to prevent outgrowth or splitting is important. The ears need to be checked regularly or wax deposit and teeth should be brushed regularly.
Environment: The Labrador is a very friendly and outgoing breed, excellent for families - the main reason for its popularity as a pet. It gets along well with other animals, children and even strangers, making it a little unsuitable as a guard dog. It loves to explore, and, because of its trusting nature, is known to get lost easily if allowed to move alone in an unfenced area.
Training: The Labrador is a very intelligent dog, widely used in hunting, tracking, therapy, detection and disabled assistance. Its affinity for water also makes it a very good lifeguard. The dog likes to be active, and can get bored easily if not getting its daily dose of physical and mental exertion. Daily exercise is also important because Labradors tend to be indiscriminate eaters and are prone to obesity. Early leash training is advised to prevent its active nature turning into a chain pulling habit in later years.
Health: The breed’s life expectancy is 10 to 12 years. It is a generally healthy breed with some inherited disorders that can be avoided through checks before bringing a pup home. Some of these are: hip and elbow dysplasia, knee problems, eye problems, myopathy, autoimmune problems and deafness. As mentioned earlier, obesity can be an issue with some Labradors.
An ideal family dog, a Labrador Retriever can easily double up as a companion for the outdoors. Good-natured, intelligent, trusting and active, and easy to care for - there is no reason to doubt why the breed is so widely loved by dog owners across the world.

I had two beautiful chocolate labs who died while protecting me from a wild cougar. One was killed immediately and the other one died of sadness... I dug their grave side by side as they were extremely loyal. I came back two months later and I saw it. A beautiful Red Fern in between the two graves. Best dogs I ever had.

I relate, had a yellow lab, best damn dog I ever had. Eventually got bitten defending our farm from a wolf, got infected with rabies and had to put him down.

A friend of my mom's had a yellow-black lab mix who looked like a German Shepherd with her colouring. She lived to 15 as well and only died because of old age. The vets told the owners that their dog wasn't suffering from anything. Her body was just shutting down.
They're talking average life-span. Some live as long as 18 years. Some die very early.
I have a 5 year old yellow lab and I love her to bits, I dont know if all labs are like this but she doesnt know what personal space is at all lol

My chocolate lab "Bobo" was so smart he learned how to break into my fridge. So I bought a new fridge with the freezer on the bottom ( not easy to open) and he figured it out in 2 days.Rest in peace my beloved Bobo you were the best!

I had a yellow lab lived to be 17. Had him since he was 6wks old. I lived in the country on a farm and always said if I die and am reincarnated, I'd want to come back as that dog. He had an amazing life!

nolan..i was just curious and googled that information because a breeder told me that there was no such thing as a sliver lab...and i am shopping for lab pups..according to the report i read both AKC and a representative of Labrador Club of America claim the chocolate range from sedge to chocolate and the silver is incorrectly registered as silver..and both parties agreed that the silver most accurately describe as chocolate than silver..and both are Labradors by DNA according to this report..it's kind of like the fox-red Labradors labeled as a Red but there is no such thing as a Red Lab but should be registered as a yellow lab..so no, there are only three kinds of color for the Labs..kind of like the controversy of the flat earth proponents..

My 11 year old yellow lab was my best friend, I saw her more than my own family. I had her from age 7, and she passed away when I was 18. Literally the most loving, gentle being I ever met. I miss her more than she’ll ever know.

Dogs 101 missed on an important fact: There are 2 types: the Show Lab/English and the Field Lab/American. They have different traits, physical build and temperament.
you are correct in what you say .i live in the UK but visit the USA a lot .they all most look like a different breed .
I breed labs and that is just a bloodline thing although you are correct English is heavier in the body and shorter legs. American is taller and lean. But they will all hunt the same if trained to do so

We had to put our 15 yr old chocolate lab down couple days ago. Broke our hearts, we all still cry so much! She was the sweetest girl! We brought her home, buried her next to her sister that we lost exactly 1 yr ago. We miss them so much! I'm crying as I'm typing this.

Yes, my #1 favorite dog breed, cute as hell as a puppy, adorable as it grows, loyal, intelligent, energetic to play fetch, in suprized QuaterBacks don't have Labrador retrievers, i sure would, give them a good run, lots of love, and you'll have a best friend beyond life. We had a Black Lab, i couldn't have asked for a better dog, he passed away little over 2 years ago. His name was Knight.

Currently have a 2 year old black lab named Daisy. She's a rambunctious dog, loves to play and explore! She is great with my 1yr old son and surprisingly makes for an excellent watchdog.
My dog has never met my grandmother and one day she stopped by, well I opened the door and my son was standing by my leg with Daisy behind me. My grandma bent down to I guess pick my son up, or something and Daisy thought that was a big no no and lunged at her. Luckily I was able to stop her from biting my grandma, but from that day that woman has refused to even come over. I told her she just needs to get to know my dog first, cause everyone else that comes over and has met my dog, she's great with.

I had a chocolate lab for 15 years, she was honestly the sweetest little thing, her fur was super silky and soft (I had friend's with labs but for reason their fur was never as silky as my dogs fur??) I would pet her ears all the time because they were so soft and she loved it. It's been a year since she passed and wow do I miss her. Best dogs in the world
"Labs known to get lost easily"? nope, sorry! My black lab knows our property boundaries, never leaves without saying "ok" and doesn't wear a collar. Well behaved dogs, and so friendly!

I've had one black and am now on my fifth chocolate. They can be a nuisance if you don't have time to spend with them. They need something to do. If they aren't hunting or being walked, they may chew things, dig, eat anything they can reach, etc. Even with a few of these things happening occasionally, they are well worth the investment. They are fantastic retrievers for upland game, squirrels and rabbits, and especially water birds.

When my daughter was born, my Chocolate lab, Bailey slept under her crib from day one, and anyone who entered the room ,she would growl, and only put her head down if it was me or my wife. We had to put her down when my daughter was 13, that was 15 years ago, and i still think about her everyday. :)

My first dog was a chocolate lab, she lived 15 years, was easy to train, I got her at 12 weeks. When I brought her home I threw my back pack across the room and she brought it back. She would sit, stay, heal, come when called and do tricks within the first week. I thought I was a genius dog trainer but it was her, she never chewed anything, she was a great fucking dog, useless as a guard dog. I have a Bull Terrier pup now, complete different experience. My second dog was a 10O lb German Shepherd. My Bull Terrier is my third dog, she would not have been good for a first dog, she’s crazy. Labs are the perfect first dog. It took a Lab and a Shepherd to prepare me for a bull terrier. But my current pup does both the jobs of my previous two dogs. My Shepherd was an awesome guard dog and that’s it. My Bull Terrier does all dog jobs, we love her to death and she would protect Us to the death. My lab would cave for a piece of bread. My Shepherd would grab people by the arm and hold them until I commanded her to let go. She was 100 percent guard dog. My Bull Terrier is a good balance, full dog spectrum, she pulls, points, hunts, retrieves, and guards. My lab would be any ones friend, she was not bred for guarding.

We are picking up our lab puppy next week! He's a rescue and we don't know his condition but hes young enough to bounce back. He'll be my 2nd lab. They're such great dogs.
Here's to Nick a black Lab, Butch his son a yellow Lab, Tuffy another son of Nick who was black and later came Fred and Barney two brothers who were my dogs after Butch and Tuffy past away. I will see them again in heaven, until then I grieve the loss of their companionship.

My 1st. choc lab (Franklin)sadly died of a heart tumor aged 8,2 days before my birthday,that was 7years ago,got another one (major)from a rescue had him 7years,he had need kicked and punched by his 1st owner.we got him at 5 months old,as said he's 7 now and just loves life.labs are the best dogs in the world and we are getting another one this year.

Amazing how Amarican narrow small minded people in a globalized world ony speaks in terms of lbs & inches. They must also speak in Kgs & centimeaters (both systems). Apparently the info you present about the origin of Lab retrievers is not quite right, the St Johns water dog of Newfoundland is likely a direct ancestor of the Labrador & originates in Britain, please see following link

I've never had a dog or a cat but I can tell, once you get a dog, not only will they be your protectors, friends or like family but they could understand your emotions. They could tell when you are upset or depressed about something.

I had a lab once. It was only 3 years old when the house caught fire, which destroyed all of my work. Can't afford to build a new one. Hopefully a labrador will cheer me up.
A lab is a very good working dog my dog is a working dog all I do is cut trees down she is on every single job with me excellent dog very smart super smart gets along with my cats lets me know if something's in the woods lets me know if someone's coming when my guards down and she is just an all-around good dog gets along with customers dogs gets along with everybody but if there's a fight she'll fight
I have a chocolate lab puppy witch I show her on my TH-cam channel but she is is different from any dog I've ever had, she loves trying outfits, she is hard to train because she so friendly And wants to play with everyone and get borred soooo fast even after she goes outside she comes back in and destroys my house if I leave her alone for 5minutes too long and she eats like crazy and begs me for more and more but when I got her she was skinny and seller said she hadn't ate all day and it was 4 in the after noon and she was 8weeks when I got her and she's 11weeks now and I spoiled her because I assumed she wasn't getting treated right and now unfortunately she runs over me and when I say sit or stop she barks like a grown dog at me and scares me because she's still a freaking pup but I love her so much and I have her going to obedience class next week
My doggo is a cross between a few species but she took from the chocolate Labbie and another retriver the most, she has the physique of a male choc labbie with nice shiny dark brown coat with a white frog shaped mark on the chest and white paws, she is a most beatufil doggo

My Lab passed away after almost 16 years just two weeks ago. Runt of the litter - but hell of a character. Had a Fibrocartliginous Embolism from when he was 9 and didn't give a single f***. Even when the VET came to put him to sleep (he had started losing weight and muscle definition at his waist and rear legs, which combined with his leg meant his stamina was dramamtically reduced), he just sat up as staright as he could and stared at he vet the entire time, the only sign of him being nervous was a slight quivering to his jaw., Vet summed him up best - Stoic.
