I would like to put this in my PitBoss series 3. All the videos I’ve ever seen you guys make it look so simple. When you’re 78 years old and mechanically disinclined, I don’t think I want to try it by myself.
I understand. It isn’t difficult but a little involved. Pit Boss does sell a WiFi plug and play that might work better for you
Quality install, nice work
Did mine a couple of weeks ago and i absolutely love mine! I also followed your instructions on your shelf... thank you sir
After changing to the Rec Tec controller I kept having temp problems. My set temp was at 250º and my actual temp bounced from 225º to 295º. I figured out what the problem was. The ambient temperature probe was still a Pit Boss ambient temperature probe. I got the Rec Tec Ambient Temperature Probe and installed it and the problem went away. Works great now! A $20.00 fix. I also used your shelf idea too. It's great! Thx!
You can use the stock pit boss one as long as it’s working properly (not having swings itself) and offset the temp on the controller.
@@michaelboykin9189 I wonder if your probe wires were reversed?
Great upgrade for sure....love the Rec Tec controller!
That controller will change your boss and work so much better. Did same thing to my Austin and it’s night and day difference. You can also change the offset to calibrate the temperature to match another thermometer. Did you have to buy the shelf with the red TEC controller? I know Rec tec doesn’t sell the controller buy it self any more.
Fredrick3577 I called them direct and they did have the controller for sale without the shelf but it wasn’t an option online. Done a few cooks so far and definitely an improvement. Thanks for watching.
Nice job
Does this controller work on a smaller unit? I have the tailgater size pit boss and am sick of the 40-50 degree swings
Thank you for sharing your experience and knowledge. How do you order the controller? I do not see it on their site.
From what I’m hearing the company no longer selling the controller separately. Give them a call direct to confirm.
Will follow this.. i have seen an guy use the existing pitboss module and adapted the rectec to the frame of the module to fasten to the pitboss. Also note he waterproof it with a silicone. Curious to see if gutting of the pitboss module was needed with your experiment.
I wonder how well it'll work with the 820 deluxe with the vertical controller
So they make it to where you can't buy the controllers anymore? Can't find any on their site or anywhere else?
That’s what I’m am hearing, but call to confirm. The biggest difference from one pellets grill from another is the technology so they might not want to sell that off anymore. Good luck.
Were you able to call and get one?
Why the Rec tec and not the pit boss wifi controller? Was the pit boss available at the time or is this better quality unit?
Good Question, Pit Boss didn’t have the Wifi option at the the time and Wasn’t PID.
very well done video
How do you upgrade to the reqtec controller
Do you have another link for the controller? The one in your description is just going to the rectec site and I'm not able to find it.
You will have to call RecTec direct to see if they still sell the unit. Last I heard they wouldn’t unless you had a RecTec repair.
Man, pit boss just released wifi controls for a bunch of their models. Great job. But could have been patient. Would have been a quick unplug and plug into the new one.
True, only issue is it’s not PID controller so if you’re happy with the current Pit Boss controller and just want WiFi then it’s a good option.
Could you please send me a link for the rec tec controller you're using? I would like to purchase one.
You have to call rec Tec direct to order one. They do not list it on their website. Take care
@@JoeriksGarage wow speedy reply. Thank you very much. Happy new year
Hey. Could you please send me a link to the connectors you used for the rectec controller?
I am hearing they are no longer selling this unit unless you own a rec Tec and need a replacement but give them a call directly to confirm. Good Luck.
@@JoeriksGarage I actually lucked out. I made a reddit post, and found a rectec owner who ordered me a controller. So the controller came with the connectors?
What is the model number for the rectec controller?
How much was the rec tec controller.
At the time $200. Not sure they still sell it but check direct with them.
What is the model number of the rectec
I have the 820 PB with the basic controller. Will the RT 700 fit on my PB.
You might have make a difference mount but the wiring should be the same.
I'm not getting very much smoke with this PID controller. The meat is not smokey enough. How can I increase the smoke?
You can cook at a lower temp for longer time and sprits the meat every hour to allow more smoke penetration throughout the cook but you’ll never get as much smoke as a stick burner if that’s what your comparing too. Hope that helps
Turn it to 180° for "extreme smoke"
Use the hickory for a bold smoke @150F setting..
Where did you find this controller? Have been searching the web and cannot find it
You have to purchase from Rec Tec directly but you must call them, they don’t have it listed on the website anymore.
@@JoeriksGarage Thank you!
I called rec tec and they dont offer it anymore. Too many people complaining bout it not working or issues probably due to not hooking it up correctly. Very sad day but was wondering if anyone has heard of an alternative I can look into
That disappointing. I know a few other companies that sell WiFi PID controllers but I have not use them so wouldn’t want to recommend them. Let us know what you find.
@@JoeriksGarage Pit Boss have their own now, pitboss-grills.com/accessories/legacy-wifi-bluetooth-controller-trapezoid
Please do a review on it if you can, Thank you for the great content!
What did you use to cut the aluminum? In particular the inside of square part of the plate.
Sorry, just saw your question. I used a jigsaw to cut out the inner rectangle.
I cannot find the controller on the web page, do you have a link?
Alfonso Araiza they don’t list it for some reason, you have to call to order it. Hope that helps
Where do I find this controller to buy?
Unfortunately Rec Tec no longer just sells the controller, you have to show them proof but you could try calling Rec Tec directly.
@@JoeriksGarage soooooo, do you have an extra that you'd be willing to share?
Unfortunately no, you could try Pit Boss replacement controller, it has Wifi but not PID. I haven’t used it so can’t tell you if it’s good or bad.
I did the install, but when my smoker reaches the set temp on the new controller the smoker begins to cycle the fan on and off. Is this normal? I thought the auger was supposed to control the temp. Am I good to go?
Darrell Eaker yes the fan and auger both cycle so it is normal. I’m loving it, and foods coming out great. Enjoy.
Joerik's Garage Good answer, thx!
Rectec wont sell the controller alone how did you get one?
That's what I'm hearing from other, I purchase mine late 2019 and had to call to order. Try giving them a call and asking for the controller for the RT-700. Good Luck
@@JoeriksGarage no go they shut us down
I have been thinking of doing same thing
Do you have a part number for the control board
greywolfhuntin sorry they don’t list it. You have to call Rec Tec and ask for the RT-700 controller.
Joerik's Garage what was the price
greywolfhuntin it was $220 with probs and shipping.
Does the original pit boss temp probes work with this upgrade??
Jason Shoemaker they do not, different input
Could of just used the case from the old controller. Just cut the rectangle out and put caulking around it to male it water tight seal and snap it in the grill like the old did.
Yes, people do that but since my old controller still worked I didn’t.
@@JoeriksGarage o i see. I have 2 broken pit boss controllers so i can do it that way. I just bought a rec teq controller like yours from someone. I cant be having 50 to 80° temp swings up and down. Keep making good videos bud im enjoying your content. Also what is the app called?
Thank you, app just RecTec. You’ll enjoy the new controller.
rectec wont sell the controller anymore... just for warranty claims
That’s what I’ve heard from some. You could try Pit Boss WiFi if you just want WiFi and not PID. Their are other companies that sell aftermarket controller with both PID and WIFi but I have not used them. Let me know what you end up with, good luck.
Can you please tell me how you get that type of controller
You can buy it direct from Rec Tec here: www.rectecgrills.com/. I would call customer service to order, not showing online right now. Thanks for watching
How much was it?
$200 and additional $20 for the external probes that fit.
Rectec link is not complete link
They don’t list the controller on their website, you have to call them to order.
@@JoeriksGarage Yep no longer on the site. How much did you get the controller for?
$220 with probes. Pit boss started selling WiFi controller for half the price but they are not PID
Can you talk a little louder can barely hear you
Sorry, was using my phone back then, newer video have better audio. Thanks for watching
Can u do this to any pit boss
Not sure on the new controller pit boss has but all the old controller should have the same wiring. Problem is they no longer sell the RecTec controller.
