I Wish I Could Read this Sci-Fi Series for the First Time

- This series is hard SF with incredible world building, an imaginative and believable future, and a compelling, uncontrived take on human conflict with both alien species and time itself.
I could not put it down once I started, and I've recommended it to dozens of people.
Definitely pick up The Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu if you haven’t already.
#threebodyproblem #scifibooks #scifirecommendations #scifireads
This trilogy is peak modern sci fi.
agreed
@@nateliason try xenogenesis
@@nateliason I do not agree. It’s just a bunch of trash.
Isaac's Asimov "Foundation" series is also good, guys. But yeah this trilogy is good too ❤
Your mom’s juices are peak modern sci fi, but you don’t know that since you be drinking it up… selfish biihh
Just by seeing the pages I already knew what Trilogy it was
so true 😂😂😝
Yup. It's the small, medium, then large thickness
Same
True, the last book has like 700 pages but it still felt short!
It is sci Fi perfection for me. Definitely agree.
If you like that dark themed genre of hard-sci fi I definitely recommend Blindsight by Peter Watts, another book with mind-blowing concepts about consciousness
@@ArkzardI just looked up the summary, and my god it sounds amazing. Definitely something I’ll have to look into 😍🫶🏻
@@Arkzard I've heard lots of good things about it but never compared to 3 Body, I'll have to check that out ASAP
Dude because of u, I read this and is now my fav book
I KNEW what series you were talking about two scentences in. That series ROCKS.
My books arrive tomorrow! So excited! Flynn got me hooked 😂
I saw the books from the side, looked to my shelf to compare the size of my books and just thought "yep, it's TBP" lmao
The ending of the third book brought me to tears, very beautiful
Great concepts and world building.
Next read should be "old mans war"!
I guessed what you were holding the minute you started talking! I agree; it's a fabulous trilogy!😊
Oh man i wish you could start with the Perry Rhodan series but its alot of Books and small "Heftromane" (could not find the english word for that ) ! Its a german sci-fi book series that started 1961! its peak sci-fi with different autors and guestautors over the years !
Currently finishing the first one, but now I need to go to the bookstore and buy the second one.
enjoy!
I saw 3 books and knew immediately.
I read book 1 after having it on my list for years! Excited for books 2,3 and the author approved book 4 by another author
Couldn't agree more. Redemption of time, the spin off, is good too
I came looking for this comment... _The Redemption of Time_ is excellent, and even though it's written by another author, it has the stamp of approval by Cixin Liu.
Dont miss Redemption of Time
The series aint complete without it.
It's a good read if you can get past the premise.
First sci-fi trilogy I’ve ever read, finished it yesterday. I want to read it again.
When the "universe blinked" in the first book, i was intrigued.
When the Dark Forest theory was explained in the second book, i hid under my bed.
When they started to use cosmological
constants as weapons in the third book, i lost my mind.
I wanted to like it more than I actually did
I think I understand this. Same for me
Why didn’t you like it that much? I’m thinking about getting it as a gift for someone but I am not quite sure about it now
@@swiftie3288 not OP, but I just finished the second book and overall have found it to be an enjoyable series, but not my favorite. The biggest flaws for me are the characters and the dialogue. It's surprisingly reminiscent of some classic sci-fi in that way: big ideas, awe-inspiring concepts, astounding scientific revelations, coupled with flat characters and awkward dialogue.
Everything sci-fi about it is absolutely fantastic. But the character work keeps it from being excellent for me.
@@Belazoth. thanks a lot for your explanation:) (merry Christmas if you celebrate 🎄)
Thanks, I shall listen! Heard of the series. Now I know why.
Book series is amazing. But it gets rough to read as in the crushing reality of some of the science is very real.
just bought the books for myself this christmas ... can't wait to get the days off to read ...
Loved it too, was mind bending. Jason Liu? That pronunciation 😅
you look like one of the guys from the netflix series "bodies"
This trilogy makes me appreciate the fact that my native language is Chinese😂
Best Gordon Ramsay cosplay I've ever seen. Needs work on the accent, though.
Dude looks young and old at the same time.
"tsi-shin lee-oo" just for future reference
I have read them 3 times so far... Seems like there will be more
there is a 4th book.
That is not a book actually it is show on Netflix
Damn I though you were gonna say Ringworld by Larry Niven
Just now finished reading the Series 😅
Coming to Netflix in march
When i saw the vid, for i sec a thought its about young gordon ramsey😅
What the hell is it called? Might be useful information. By Jason Little? Dixon Little? What the hell are you saying? Slow down
Just a tip: You have your wig on inside out.
Not Iain M Banks, but not bad…
Mispronounced his name
U look like that famous chef who curses a lot
Good syfy, not hard syfy. Especially books 2 and 3.
i gave up after book 2....
This dude looks like Flash Gordon Ramsey
I regret only that I have but one like to give this comment.
Bazinga.
😅😂😅
Each book is exponentially better than the one before and the scale of each book grows exponentially. The last few chapters of Death's End are beautiful.
All of them are great but the 2nd book is the masterpiece of the series.
For me it is 2-1-3.....
3rd book is cool describing the scale and the threat of the universe but I feel it is the worst written book of all 3.
It is definitely the least cohesive, but it is just so massive in terms of its scope. I also really like the last chapters and how he blends the personal elements.
The 3 Tales were genius
I have adhd and dyslexia , it took me like bb 2 years to read all 3 but immensely worth it . I love how I knew what books they were before you even were halfway done describing
I sympathise, audiobooks were the saving grace for me.
This series is shockingly mind blowing.
it is likely the most valid version of future predictions
@@helengriffin6690 The most valid prediction is that we are alone in the reachable universe
@@VangusKhanabsence of evidence isn’t evidence of absence, just because he have only explored a drop of the ocean doesn’t mean there aren’t fish on the ocean

Why do you call the author „Chicks-In-Loo“?! That’s the worst pronunciation I’ve ever heard.
Try this: Tsyr-Shin-Leeyu.
The Chinese TV series is on TH-cam for free with English subtitles! If you have reading difficulties, the original TV series is a GREAT option.
Does it cover all 3 books?
You'll have to read the subtitles though
@@dgage1776 Are you American?
@@zuzaj7054 maybe why
@@dgage1776 curiously, usually Americans have issues with reading subs, most of the world is used to it
The way you’re pronouncing the name [chicks-in] made me laugh haha 😂 I understand Chinese names are hard to pronounce for English speakers. You can get a close approximation to the Chinese pronunciation by saying [ts-shin]. The “Ci” part of the name sounds like the end of the word “let’s” and the “Xin” part sounds kind of like if you had a lisp and said the word “sin”. Hope this helps!
Yeah correct pronunciation is shee shin
Started three body problem and finished it in 4 days which is so fast for me, I got the dark forest 2 days ago and I’m already on page 300, it’s so good
Be ready to be ticked off, excited, awed, horrified, and contemplative for Death's End.
didn't you got blind from so much reading?
I wonder what he would think about the book ( Mr. Fix It and Miss Sue ). It is. no nonsense coming of age story where the brat dose not get her why.
Book overview
This is the poetic tale of Miss Sue, a contentious young woman no matter what a father and mother would do. In trying to raise a proper woman of dignity and respect, what she became as she grew up was something they did not expect. So what are the parents to do when they are down to their last wit, and realize they have no choice but to send for Mr. Fix It.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
It was interesting but a little too "dry" for me.
yeah that's a common criticism
Yeah it’s great if you have a PHD in theoretical physics
You made me buy the 3 books.
Just finished the first.
Amazing.
You're in for a treat with the 2nd. Have fun
You've only scratched the tip of the iceberg
“If there’s no spice I’m not reading it”
Is there "spice" in these books?
I'm interested unless there is
Yeah there's a super spicy alien probe scene in the second book
@@Spurgte oh, okay.
Not my cup of tea, then.
Thank you for the warning
@@Spurgtewhat are you talking about?
@@samanthacharlton4123 If by “spice” you mean actually described sex scenes then no. But there is some romance in the second and third books, which comes off as pretty cringy and slightly creepy. There is also lots of violence, suicide, mass destruction, etc
Tried reading it twice. I just couldn't get into it.
I’m at page 170 of the first book. Finding it boring. Is it worth continuing???
Definitely, the first book can start a little slow but it really ramps up all through the end and the next two
The start is very boring and the whole series is very China-centric so it can be an absolute slog.
Afterwards it just gets exponentially more complicated with a lot of sci-fi concepts. By the third book is just speculative sci-fi insanity. Do not expect a hopeful ending or a nice one.
A lot of people swear by this trilogy with some kind of religious zealotry but it is not an easy or accesible read.
I got to 86% and couldn't finish it.
I agree. Great world building, great imagination, and fascinating aliens. However, i found it dark, hopeless and sometimes long winded. Like something was lost in translation. Don’t expect a feel good story where humanity comes together and saves the day. Looking forward to the Netflix version.
It was definitely dark, not a happy ending at all
I loved the book, but hot damn were the characters' limp cardboard cutouts... absolutely adore the world building and ideas it presented but I could get more depth out of a rain drop than MOST of the characters
I was wondering if you could elaborate your problem with the characters without giving away the story. I love stories in all forms, but sometimes I have a huge problem with Asian characters because they are so subdued/restrained it is too frustrating and gives me some sort of emotional claustrophobic feeling. I've noticed this the most in Japanese anime. Is that the kind of thing you are talking about, or is it something else?
Thank you in advance if you respond.
@roproart6529 it's been a while since I read it. The main character (and only real female protagonist) of the third book basically just stands around while all the male characters do everything and practically wait for her to catch up... it is a little hit or miss when it comes with 'passive Asian characters' a good chunk of characters are naturally Chinese or Asian so you do get the 'passive Asian ' characters, and one that basically rejects his job and sits around all day until he literally meets a women of his dreams, who is defined by "she was pretty" and does basically fuck all...
That being said many Asian characters are not passive, some go kick LOTS of ass, and from memory one guy tries to fuck a blackhole? That bit was fucking weird...
I would say there are some good characters but they are few and far between next to the cardboard crusaders. A villain from the first book is AMAZING tho.
@@roproart6529 by the way, the blackhole fucking isn't a plot point, it's literally just a side tangent that exists for no reason...
Wasn't as bad as HORRENDOUSLY unnecessary furry BDSM cruise in Judas Unchained by Peter F. Hamilton, another absolutely anus of character writing with amazing world building and ideas....
@@squishy1706 Cheng Xin sucks, Luo Ji rocks.
@squishy1706 what about the blasian characters
Just me sticking around, hoping for a book recommendation, thinking "If he reveals the books and it's Three Body, i'm gonna lose my mind". It's a good read, don't get me wrong, but i got my hopes up for nothing
Amazing books, couldn’t stop thinking about them long after finishing
My personally think they are overrated. For me, it’s the commonwealth saga by Peter F. Hamilton starting with Pandora‘s star and Judas Unchained and ending with the void trilogy.
Watched the Netflix series... absolutely outstanding... started reading the book yesterday
is the netflix series the exact same story or adaptaded? just finished watching and idk if i should read the first book or start with the second
@@KentaXXit's not exact but close. The books are much, much better though and the story makes much more sense in the books. It's the best sci fi I have ever read.
@@KentaXX is not the same, a little different, but very enjoyable. I'm about halfway through and really enjoying it so far,
I'd say some parts of the Netflix series were vastly superior... some of the book gets a little long I the tooth. Parts feel like filler or unnecessary, whereas I thought every episode of the series was outstanding.
@@KentaXXthe Netflix series stick to the core plot development and it does good job on exposing exciting theories; overall it’s respectful to the original book. Only the adapt the main characters to make it more interesting for western audiences. They change the genders, names, and races of those main characters but still good adaptations.
@@WhatDemocracy Congratulations, you made the right choice. Oh, by the way, how do you know I have Liu Cixin’s signature version of The Three-Body Problem?

„Chicksin loo“
bit overrated
Well its book 2 and 3 that is mindblowing, the first one is an ugly boring old mans fart.
No
Would you mind sharing wht shelf you have in the background? It looks so much better than Kallax
Man, I was certain the reveal was going to be “The Expanse.”
Wot a disappointing reveal. Can you FIND a better contender for Boringist SF Ever Award?
Oof. I just finished listening to the audiobook and I bounced off 3BP pretty hard. I found it pessimistic, misanthropic, eco-terrorism apologist. The characters were not well written and the imagery and metaphors did not click with me (maybe translation/cultural differences).
I made the mistake of trying lightning ball. And the number of times I heard ball lightning was mind numbing. Had to stop
I wish I could read it again for the first time too. Especially the first book, and not know what it's about at all. Just go in totally cold. Making my way halfway thru the book, thinking it's a science heavy murder mystery/conspiracy story, then getting slammed with an alien invasion story almost out of nowhere. That would be so cool.
Good series. However fuck that 2nd book with the 100 pages about a needle flying through space killing all the ships. What a boring ass 6 hours of my life.
It's a lot of blah blah blah. which, in and of itself isn't a bad thing (I've read everything Neal Stevenson ever wrote after all) but it's the kind if blah blah blah that you have to go back to not because it's complicated or so compelling that you miss something, it's because it seemed unimportant. and now you have to go back because you're suffering from accute "foreign writer tedious translation sleeping sickness.
Or as Trump would call it. "The hong kong flu"
(I'm kidding, I hate that guy. He literally couldn't read a playing card.)
I'm willing to say it might be me. i enjoyed these books as isolated vignettes. But to me the gristly connective tissue between events were bland and tough to chew.
Me?
I put my money on poor translation. The whole book has that Chinese electronics user manual vibe. If you get a new controller or watch or something, you read the manual and
There are things you have to ignore because nobody understands the English by way of Melbourne by way of bejing translation.
I don't care either way, it's just nice to see you reading for a change, instead of playing with the pokey mans on the Gameboy...
Did I mention I just got out of prison?
🙃
The Dark Forest is honestly terrifying.
It’s by far the best of the series and incredibly thought provoking.
The 3rd book had great ideas, but the worst main character in a sci-fi series EVER.
If you ever get a chance, look for "Chronicles of the Lensmen" by E. E. "Doc" Smith, it is hard Sci-fi/Fantasy with a storyline that I loved, and want everyone who likes science fiction to read.
I didn't know about the books before I watched the Netflix show which was interesting but also fell short and felt really strange. Are the books better than the Netflix show ?
Loved the first two books but refuse to finish book three. It’s such depressing, slow completely preventable end.
Ngl, I tried this series, and I was bored out of my mind. Halfway through the second one, I was just like, nope, this is a chore, and I hate it.
You completely butchered Cixin’s name
I read them, and thought they were terrible. Interesting story but I found the style of writing really dull. Like reading a German car manual.
It's on my list. Have to get through the Foundation, Rama and Hyperion series first.
Omg new show on netflix on the books and every tom d and harry coming on saying bout the books 😂😂😂😂
It's bad as sci-fi, even worse as literature. Primitive in style and language. Right up gen Z alley, I guess😂
I have a lot of trouble finding g anything that captures my attention in any novel nowadays. I gave this a try after the first season on Netflix. Starting week 3 reading it and I'm half way through deaths end. . . Soooo I think I'll be looking at ball lightning and supernova era soon
I tried reading it and I couldn’t get it, the pace was strange, too many hops in settings, characters.. I don’t know, and I have read a lot of classic 80s sci-fi
Solaris is a really good sci-fi/philosophical story and despite the fact it has two chapters that go deep into hard pseudo scientific theories about the planet in question but its enkoyable other than that, also The Three Body Problem is unique but its not terribly interesting
Though you were going to recommend something fantastic like the culture novels, but no 😂
Read the first book. Didn't like it. The chinese names were indistinguishable characters were flat as hell and over all nothing happened. Will not be finishing the second or starting the third. Instead im going to re read dune
I couldn't go on after the first book. I wont deny the ideas presented and the plot itself are great but good lord the characters are hollow and the writing (prose and dialogue) are bad.
It was so refreshing to have a new idea. There was nothing new under the sun for decades. I doubt it will happen again in my lifetime
The dark tower is the greatest sci fi with the most fascinating future dystopian world
@nateliason - yes, this is a fantastic series, currently being translated into Maltese by a Maltese Publishing and Translation house.
Read the whole series in 2 weeks. I think the whole series is called The Remembrance of Earth's Past!
I've been hovering around this series for quite a while, but I decided to dive into this world last week, and oh man! What a ride! Already finished reading the first book, currently halfway through the second book. Never has a book caught my interest as deeply as this since the Foundation book series. Very, very peak sci-fi!
Too bad you missed it. This actually rehashed The Killing Star. 😂
I read the first 2 of the trilogy. There are new ideas and themes which are not outside the realms of possibilities. While the ideas are good. The writing is just ok.
I read them several times and enjoyed a completely different world all together ❤️
