    This church actually fared better than the cathedral at Cologne (which actually is a cathedral, since a Roman Catholic Bishop is seated there), which was heavily damaged in bombing raids, even though it served as (like the Ulm Minster) a prominent and visible navigational landmark to bombing crews. The Cologne Cathedral is perhaps Germany's most visited landmark.
    A very nice video, Vic. Please keep up the good work.

    I climbed it a few times while I was in the US Army, stationed in Neu-Ulm, 1983-88, in the Pershing nuclear missile unit that was on Wiley Kaserne. I went back to visit there in the summer of 2019. What an awesome trip! I also have two kids there (and grand kids), in Laupheim.

    This tower is not 490 ft. tall... it is 530 ft. tall. (Cologne's twin towers are 515 ft. tall). Also, the interior is only 41.6 metres tall, not 60 metres.

    I love Gothic architecture . did that area escape bombing in WWII? I did not see any obvious signs of major repairs, a few sections of blocks that had been replaced but not what you would expect from a reconstruction job. Some of the art work and statues appear to be quit old and obviously not destroyed by bombing.

    • @VicStefanu
      @VicStefanu  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The centre of Ulm was destroyed (80%) during a bombing raid in Dec of 1944. The medieval area around the cathedral was leveled but the church, as if by a miracle, survived mostly intact, not a single bomb hit it.. I agree, the gothic architecture here is beautifully and faithfully executed..

    • @andyboog2010
      @andyboog2010 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The US tried to avoid bombing buildings such as these.

    • @firefly3196
      @firefly3196 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andyboog2010 This is not true. It is impossible not to hit such small goals. In Cologne, right next to Cologne Cathedral was the Hohnezoller Bridge. This one was destroyed. It was impossible to drop bombs on the bridge but not exclude any threat / destruction to the dome because it was way too close to the bridge. The Cologne Cathedral was very lucky, because its roof was built so late and it was already a steel construction, not as in Notre Dame, for example, which was made of oak. The Dresden Frauenkirche was completely destroyed, as were large parts of the Berlin Cathedral. That the churches like the Ulmer Münster or the Cologne Cathedral were hardly damaged is a miracle, not the work of bomber pilots. There was no order to spare the churches or historically significant buildings, they wanted to achieve maximum destruction.

    • @andyboog2010
      @andyboog2010 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@firefly3196 sorry. Your wrong. As a policy they tried not to hit historic sites. I'm not saying that they didnt get hit or even become targeted if the germans ended up using it somehow as part of their war effort. But as a general rule we didnt target these things.

    • @firefly3196
      @firefly3196 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andyboog2010
      Sorry, but that's propaganda. It is simply not possible from this height to destroy or damage certain buildings, especially because the cities were often under clouds. Dresden e.g. was completely war-irrelevant and was a refugee camp for the people fleeing from the East. The city was full of historically great treasures, it was called the Elbe-Florence. It was completely destroyed. Everything was destroyed, shortly before the end of the war. Same applies to Potsdam and other cities. So do not tell me you've paid attention to the Historic Buildings. Bomber Harries himself said that they wanted to destroy primarily apartments and the old town.
      "Apart from Essen, we have never chosen a special industrial plant as our target, and the destruction of industrial facilities always seemed like a special bonus to us, and our ultimate goal was always downtown."
      I seem to know more about your story than you do.

    The spire is beautiful to you but not to me. It is over sized and over bearing for the size of the church. Standing alone one can see the craftsmanship and its beauty, but attach to the smaller structure it is out-of-place and misfitted. Also, you should have a professional do your videos.

    It' so sad that we (germans/europeans) are a dying culture.
    There still will be people in europe, but without heritage, culture and
    collective remembrance

    See what happens when protestants take over a catholic church and have no interest to preserve it's originality. One can clearly see the carelesness and selective preservation when it comes to it's catholic heritage. What a shame, it would have been one of the most beautiful churches in the world.
    PS. I'm not promoting hate towards fellow christians (Lutherans in this case), but making a point when it comes to preserving a historical heritage.

      Yeah, what the Protestants did to western church art is regrettable. However, the Protestant Reformation also brought about many positive changes.

      Their contribution to modern society cannot be denied, I agree on that.

      therionman52 It would have been preferable that protestantism would still attempt to build churches in a detailed manner, whilst retaining the developments that it contributed towards society, such as medical contributions, academics, etc.
