    Once again , straight and to the point !
    I’ve been wrenching on my ‘97 ZJ’s for over 20 yrs and find Barricade’s (what’s the dude‘s name ? ) videos to be spot on without wasting a second of your time !
    I just changed my steering gearbox last week and should’ve watched this video first - I wouldn’t have had to look for socket sizes and torque specs !
    Great job once again, Barricade Garage !

    Just replaced my steering gear today, and, again, your video was incredibly helpful in guiding me through the process. Just bought my third '96 ZJ two weeks ago for my son, so your videos will help us BOTH tackle all the items it's gonna need. As has been said many times in the comments section of your videos, you are a great instructor. We appreciate it!

    • @barricadegarage5361
      @barricadegarage5361  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry I forgot to mention I had to buy a non variable assist high pressure line from advanced auto because I ordered the wrong one from rock auto. If your box isnt hydro tapped and is stock then get the non variable assist line because the variable asssist has a longer neck and wont fit right..

    Hi again, killer video as always! Sorry to bother you with a dumb question, but there is a small hose that appears disconnected and is resting on the plastic cover at 1:03-1:05... what is that supposed to be connected to? It came off when I removed my air cleaner. Bless

    • @barricadegarage5361
      @barricadegarage5361  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thats the vent hose from the front axle. It does not connect to anything and the factory position was under the air cleaner box so you can zip tie it to something so it doesnt drag on the ground

    I love your videos! I have a question. My 98 ZJ has a new pump I installed last year, but steering has always seemed choppy at idle. Now it doesn’t like to turn left and locks up if I try to turn left. The whole steering rack and stabilizer were new 2 years ago and still in good shape. I’m thinking my steering box is bad. Do you think that could be? It doesn’t whine, and no fluid leaks from anywhere, so I doubt it’s a bad pump, but who knows. Thanks for any input.

    Man, another awesome video as usual. Whenever I need to do something on my ZJ, the first thing I do is check for one of your videos.
    Question - the only thing that I think I have a question about that I think I missed in the video is how to make sure that the travel is centered - I guess the "position" of the gear coming out of the box doesn't matter, as long as you put the pitman arm on in the correct orientation? Am I correct in assuming it's the position of the arm on the box that controls the travel? And it looks like it's keyed to only on on in one orientation? (Also, unless your pitman arm is worn out, I assume there's no real benefit to a new arm?)
    Thanks again, man!

  • @brandonshelters
    @brandonshelters 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have a question. My 97 Grand Cherokee Laredo is doing the very same thing. I have about 2 inches of play to either side on the steering wheel before she ends up turning. Now, I have replaced everything from ball joints up to the pitman arm,including the gear box and the 2 inches of play is still there. What would be the answer to this issue? Thanks.

  • @jamcdona
    @jamcdona 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    One question- did you use a remanufactured unit, new or good used? I had Les Schuabb look into my steering looseness, and they replaced every articulating joint and wheel bearings to the tune of $1800, and while it was a lot better, it still wanders. Steering wheel does not return to center, flat spot when going straight forwards that makes me have to make small corrections.

    I know this is an old thread, hoping for an answer. Is there a center to the steering gear or do I just make sure the input and output shafts are in the same position on the new box? I went ahead and got a puller and new arm just in case. I just got taken to the cleaners having the suspension components replaced and it still wanders all over.

    Great video dude. I have a 98 5.9 grand cherokee. My steering box is so bad it wiggles left and right and the jeep doesnt move lol. It has alot of olay in it. Also pops too. Just havent gotten around to replace it.
    One issue with the manned pumps and gearboxes though is they are normally trash. Gone through 3 of the remaned steering pumps.
    I probably woulda greezed or antiseized the steering shaft and bolts though after putting them back on
