I saw Mr. Hudson yesterday and showed him the video. He watched it quietly, not saying a word. At the end he sighed and shed a couple of tears. Then he stated how relieved he was that you had fond memories. He also was shocked you still had that note. He said he is Very Proud of your success. Oh, and the vending machine, it was always jamming taking people’s money. It had it coming.

I truly wish I had an art teacher like that, most of the artists I had were mostly like 'okay we're sculpting clay today' or 'we're making prints today' but the one art teacher that I had, was my vocational teacher, who taught Commercial art. We called him Mr. B, so I'll use it here. He taught me the fundementals, told me about how I could use paypal to pay for my work(Which later got hacked but we don't talk about that) and kind of encouraged me in a way to actually take art seriously, and treat it like a trusted business partner and not just a playground best friend, if you catch my drift.

God this video was so sweet it nearly made me cry, Mr. Hudson is a blessing of a man, reminds me of my spanish teacher, who, ironically enough, was known by the kids, as one of the worst teachers in the school, he was known for yelling, being grumpy and being strict, though looking back on it, this was probably because foreign languages were compulsary in my school, and most of the kids who didn't want to do languages ended up choosing spanish together so they could mess around in class, and somehow in increasingly obnoxious ways, yet, when said kids would suddenly all get "sick", you could really tell he cared for the class now that he wasn't having to spend most of his time telling them off, if it wasn't for him I probably would've given up on Spanish as I had always wanted to speak it, but was stuck with learning French instead (which is just, not a fun language imo) until we got to choose our options, meaning while everyone else had already been doing Spanish for 3 years, I was just starting, and the degree to which I was falling behind at first, really got to me, I thought I was awful and that me doing Spanish was pointless, and yet, one day when we were packing up for lunch, he just said something that, really impacted me "If I had a class of clones of you, teaching could be like a dream", and that really stuck with me, it motivated me to push further, and it was just moments like this, that pushed me to do as well as I did, I will always appreciate what he did for me, until the day that I die.

Mr. Hudson sounds like he was and or is a nice person. Having teachers like that who help you become who you are now, and guide you through certain points in your life is a special thing. I teared up at the end when the sketchbook and note came up. Wherever he is now, I hope he's doing well. Thank you for sharing!

Its a special feeling to have an adult show actual care and concern about you and try to help guide you in life. I don't know how it is in other countries but here in the US that doesn't happen often and when it does some folks react negatively, thinking the teacher has bad intentions. It's a strange feeling though, going to school, feeling like a kid and having an adult actually speak to you like you're an adult. Talking to you one on one, giving you life advice or just teaching you how to be a little miscreant.
I totally would have nabbed from the vending machines because I've done that myself. Snacks and drinks.
But yeah, having an adult speak to you like an adult, treating you like a mature person, that was something rare and special to me. I'm an adult now and I miss having someone speak that way towards me. Most adults I know are like me, grown up kids who are still trying to find a place in the world because of how chaotic everything is.

She was incredible, she cared about us deeply and even though she barely knew me the one morning something traumatic happened to me, she sat down with me and talked pausing the whole class just to be sure I was okay. She even donated t he art we didn’t want to the elderly home next door! Art teachers will always be amazing people most of the time, and I hope everyone gets a Mr Hudson one day

I hated our elementary art school teacher. We weren’t aloud to talk, experiment our with art (im serious, we had to follow the lessons she gave us to the very point.) I was an “art prodigy” to her apparently, and even though she complemented me a lot, she pushed me to make art specifically for HER so SHE could keep it. My little kid brain didn’t get I was being manipulated. Always got mad at people for wasting the school’s low quality art supplies, even though I even brought my own sometimes and helped with school fundraisers for the art class. REAL dirtbag.

So I think I can explain why Mr. Hudson didn't tell anyone about what was going on wuth you. Sometimes people are being abused at home, and bringing it up with other teachers and parents can make a situation worse. The only time a teacher HAS TO inform a parent or other staff of a student and teacher interaction is when the stufent wants to self harm or harming others. It's honestly more helpful to talk to the student first than to go directly to staf or to the parents, and then if the student would like to, then get parents and staff involved. It's all about consent, and he can't force his way in. I respect that.

    • @azuradawn5683
      @azuradawn5683 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I don't at all want to take away from the impact this teacher had nor am I disagreeing with you that sometimes getting more people involved is anti-helpful, but (at least in the US), teachers are "mandatory reporters" of abuse. They do not have an option - they can't choose to keep quiet - they MUST report any sign of abuse. If they don't, they can lose their teaching certificate and get arrested. I don't think anything Illy said here would put Mr. Hudson into the realm of having to report, but it's not true that "the only time a teacher has to inform... self harm or harming others..." so I just wanted to clarify that...

I had a teacher similar to Mr Hudson called Mr. B, he was the 7th grade world history teacher and he was not afraid to humiliate people for not paying attention, tease some of his favorite students, or make vulgar/witty jokes while teaching. But he was also one of the most caring teachers I had that year. At the time I was struggling with a lot of personal and mental health problems and I’d almost always come back from lunch to his classroom crying. And during these very low points, after class, he’d check in on me. Sometimes he’d even take me to the school consoler so I could get some help. One time, he even took time out of his day to tutor me on some projects I was struggling and stressing over. Honestly, Mr. B helped me out so much during 7th grade and he’s probably one of my favorite teachers I’ve ever had.

However, the band teacher was the worst human being constantly putting me down and telling me how awful of a trombone player I was and having ridiculously high expectations for me and if I didn't live up to it he'd single me out just to humiliate me. He emotionally abused me so much that I gave up playing it even though to this day at 17 I miss playing it so much.

He would scold you if you talked in class (he even called me and my friend's parents to let them know we were talking to much!) and immediately i thought "I'm going to hate this class. Art is supposed to be fun, right?". Turned out he was very skilled, gave legitimate critiques, encouraged everyone to try new things and push their skills. Honestly, getting an A+ from him on a hand sketched portrait i did was probably the most meaningful grade i'd ever received. I STILL have that portrait today in my box of paint supplies, it's 20 years old at least. My classmates did not like this teacher but he was EXACTLY what i was looking for in teacher. He had rules, expectations, he wanted you to succeed, he'd actually discuss technique and how to develop it. it was the most rewarding year of art I took, because he retired and was replaced by two other teachers that 100% didn't care what was happening and gave no meaningful input whatsoever, everyone else loved them and the easy A's, but i was not happy and butted heads with them through the next 3 years. i expected silly things like "commercial art" to you know, have even a small amount of information about making art commercially. Nope, just a sketch pad with random assignments like "draw a butterfly" that everyone got an A in. Anyway, that's my really long way of saying Mr. Hudson sounds like he was the GOAT of art teachers. I'm thankful for people like him that are so rare, i'm sure he's fantastically proud!

The way you can make me feel emotion in almost any video put up surpasses everyone else in the animation space. I wished I had a teacher like that. I can even imagine how much it would have helped with my Autism. Having someone that actually explains to you what you did wrong and do not get mad at his students. And also yes when you started to explain who Hudson was. I totally made the link with Cars. Great usage of a character.

"Okay, I was just nervous and I wanted to make sure you were alright."
Damn, that got me. It's always touching when a teacher feels fear (for a lack of a better term) and concern for a student's well-being.
When I was in my first medical school, I came very close to dropping out of the program in my first year. I was depressed, I had several make-up tests to do (because the psychiatrist told me to not go to school for 2 weeks - especially since I had beaten myself while at school - and those two weeks happened to be the exam period), and my medications were affecting me so badly that I couldn't concentrate during the lectures or when I was studying for those make up exams. I already got the form for dropping the different classes from the dean's office and was about to go and have them signed by the head of each department when I decided to stop by the pathology faculty room to see a prof who taught in both the medical school and the pre-med program I attended. I looked up to him a great deal and valued his opinions, so I wanted to tell him what was going on. That, and because I saw that he left an envelope full of papers just sitting on the windshield of his car and I wasn't about to pick it up myself (since that would be suspicious to an onlooker).
My mom, who was with me, and I told that professor what was going on. I was going to drop out of med school. Lots of stuff was going on. My mental health was in tatters (not from the academic workload but from the sudden return of my unresolved emotional issues). My meds were affecting me. There's also some major shit going on between my family and my extended family and it's spilling into my life and studies. I doubted that I would pass my courses for the first year with all that, so I might as well drop out. (Taking a leave of absence would've been a more appropriate course of action, but the medical school doesn't grant that for first year students)
As the three of us talked about the consequences that would follow that decision, I noticed that the professor started sniffling and looking away from time to time. The one time I looked at his eyes during the conversation, I noticed that his eyes were red. That surprised me. Was he getting upset and emotional over this? It was so strange. I knew the prof as this pretty chill guy who doesn't let most things affect him, but here he was, getting affected by the decision of a single student to quit med school. I was weirded out, but at the same time, I was touched because the professor cared enough for one student to almost cry at the prospect of seeing them go. I wasn't even a high-achieving student. I was a mediocre to average student but he gave enough of a damn about me anyway. (He'd tell me a year later that he sees something in me and that he hopes somebody can bring that something out of me. If not him, then he hopes it's somebody like him. Idk if he really meant it or if it's just something he just says to his students, but it was nice to hear all the same)
I decided not to drop out of the program and just finish the school year. It wasn't because of the fact that I realized a professor gave a damn about me, but because learning that most medical schools would not accept a transferee or a student who's dropped out meant that I would not be able to achieve my dream of becoming a doctor. I just wanted a break, not close all the doors to med school.
I ended up failing out of the program in my second year anyway. I foolishly decided to enroll for the next school year even though I hardly recovered from the emotional shit storm I was in. I thought I could handle it. I was wrong. Bad mental health + compulsive behavior + playing counselor to a troubled cousin + med school is not a good combo.
[The universe decided to give me a second chance, btw, and I'm attending a new med school. It's not as prestigious as the one I failed out of, but the teachers are good and their graduates do get good opportunities too. There's even a professor who has the exact same background as me, so I know now that not all hope is lost for me.]
