Craziest Food Laws From Around The World

  • Weird History Food is taking you around the world to see some International Food Laws. If you want to get to know another country, check out its food laws, which determine everything from what products are available on store shelves to how and where people can enjoy a meal.
Some countries have very strict regulations about the food people can consume, taking into consideration everything from nutrition to the safety of the ingredients. As a result, these nations may limit the availability of certain products to promote healthy consumption or cultural eating habits. What is considered safe in the US may not be considered that way elsewhere.

It bothers me how people only ever seem to tell half the story when it comes to Ireland designating Subway's bread as not-bread. It has nothing to do with nutrition or even food-identification, really. It was just a tax law (which I thought was archaic, but have since been corrected) that classifies foods with a certain proportion of sugar as luxury goods, rather than necessities, and therefore taxes them at a higher rate. There are a bunch of foods we would commonly consider bread that Ireland's tax law would do the same thing to.

Good to show we shouldn't believe everything these types of channels say. They've probably got people churning these lists who love to quote buzzfeed lol. I'm guessing they outsource a lot (or probably all) of the writing. There's no way they have enough time for the proofreaders to do a thorough job. The editors probably have their plates full as well. The presenters sure don't have another time either. These videos are the fast food of entertainment lol

It's the 1972 Value Added Tax Act which is annually amended, hardly archaic. It's also an important law because it distinguishes between essential and non-essential foods. Bread in Ireland is very cheap compared to the United States. The US is very expensive for groceries. An 800g slice bread is a $1.41 in Ireland .

I really can’t blame Mexico and other countries banning sugary cereals from marking to kids. It’s an easy way for the food industry to get kids hooked on sugar from the get go, both as little kids and also the first thing they eat. Sugar is in everything, breads, cookies, candy, sodas, juices, snacks, it’s so easy to become obese on American food. There’s a reason a lot of other countries don’t have America’s obesity problem, or that countries start becoming obese when they allow US food companies to do business without having to cut down on the sugar content

Not exactly. Homeless is a lifestyle. Like a bum. Unhoused means you are most likely living out of your car or couch surfing and you probably are working, but you dont have/cant afford a place of your own. You arent a bum, youre just a normal person without a roof over your head trying to get back on your feet.
Its basically a new class of working poor caused by skyrocketing housing prices.
Thats how its used where i live anyway.

Before I watched the video I thought "you know what, I'm going to go out on a limb and say most of these aren't crazy." And now that I watched it, yeah. I can understand most of these. Honestly it's ridiculous what kind of ultra processed crap we eat in America. I know, hot take. But it's true and we'd be a lot better off if we banned a lot of this ourselves

The funniest thing involving Mexico is that it's Coca Cola and sodas above almost any other thing that keeps people super fat. Between the culture of feeding, and the cultural enjoyement of sodas, it has gotten out of control.

Mexico already had a huge, pun intended obesity problem before imports from other countries took hold. Mexican food is very high and fat content. They also had plenty of sugary foods before the importation of foods from the United States. can you say churros?
