It was obviously too hard to claim self defense based on the evidence. What lawyer would tell you to go for a plea deal if self defense is on the table? The fact that multiple people keep bringing up self defense after listening to what happened just shows that not everyone should own a gun. Its not first degree murder, that would entail pre-meditation. Since the victim and the defendant physically fought before the shots were fired, it complicates the situation, thats why he only got 2nd degree manslaughter, not even murder.
Then theres the changing stories and family protecting him, it woulda been extremely difficult to get a murder conviction.

He received a very minimal punishment compared to others who have committed non-violent crimes and received much more time in the system. Of course there are many factors that go along in deciding how much time a person will get. however taking a life is still taking a life and running from the cops is still just running from the cops and it just doesn't always pan out the way it's supposed to. Cuz this guy was an upstanding member of society, never committed a crime before and both sides get a chance to speak at sentencing. So the prosecutor knew that’s what the defense was gonna bring up. So he got in front of it by saying it all first and then going BUT AT THE SAME TIME, then throwing the smoke at him. It was good strategy.

When names match up with reality:

They should rename "sentencing hearing" to the "getting smoked hearing". As an attorney I love your courtroom analysis. You definitely know your crimpro (and then some).

Funny thing is we all know that if one of his daughters gets married and he gets killed in the same manner as Christopher she would be outside screaming and crying about how it’s not fair . Was anyone there on behalf of Christopher? It seemed like nobody gave a damn about him not even the prosecutor

They were both drunk, either way you cant execute someone just because you lost a fight
