I belive this was in Japan. The Japanese people tend to have a much higher respect for performances, remaining quiet and only applauding when everything is done. You can look up Japanese live music as and you'll notice they only ever clap when appropriate, during an intermission or the end. While most everywhere else we would clap after every song or any moment we loved. Japan just tends to be highly respectable to performers, to not disrupt their performance. :) I know you weren't looking for a technical answer but I hope this helped explain your bit of confusion
