    From watching this movie it seems as if Barings Bank promoted Leeson to a position far above his track record or capabilities. I know this sounds simplistic, but he was virtually set up to fail by the sheer incompetence of owners/finance managers who weren't aware of their own limitations, let alone his!
    Once in Singapore, Leeson had no real supervision, limited funding for securing a team of key staff and a total dread of being sent back to London as a failure.
    What a truly awful set of circumstances!!

      @rosiewhite …..I thoroughly agree . Unfortunately the chain of command was deeply flawed . The managers simply did not have the requisite knowledge to understand what Leeson was doing , let alone the sense to put in place checks in the system and to keep a close eye on him when he was trading at such a level. Poor old Peter Baring was wholly unaware of all this , relying on his managers etc to keep him fully appraised and informed and he was absolutely devastated by the loss of the family firm which for generations had set the standards for probity within the City . So , I certainly do NOT think that your comment is simplistic , not at all and you seem to understand just how awful were the circumstances and the impact it had on all the other very decent employees of which there were hundreds , all who lost their jobs and security because of one thoroughly dishonest and greedy man . Happily, I believe most of them were able to find further employment in the City , very much helped by the board of Barings but still , it was also devastating for them. So long ago but I too will never forget what Leeson did . BWs to you .

    In the press analysis following the collapse, journalists did not blame Leeson that much, they tended to see him as just a Watford wide boy. In their view, It was the hooray henries running Barings who should have seen it coming.

    • @zatarawood3588
      @zatarawood3588 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's because England post 60s has been pushed by a socialist agenda. media obviously portrayed this all as incompetent upper class fools who weren't managing the bank properly, giving the working class lad from Watford a pass. In reality he did things he shouldn't have, lied about it, falsified records and basically committed fraud despite management attempting to check up on him. Hes a crook plain and simple and destroyed an institution as a result costing the jobs of everyone there due to his greed. Should still be in jail.

    • @joehart7260
      @joehart7260 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      He was duly sentenced and served his time. The upper class fools were quite happy to let working class barrow boys make money for them whilst always remaining superior themselves. Clearly they didn't check up on him properly or this would never have happened.

    • @zatarawood3588
      @zatarawood3588 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      would you have the same opinion if it was a working class girl caught stealing out the till in a pub up in the north of England? that the owners were to blame for not checking up on them properly? leeson was a fraudster, he lied and cheated to make a bigger bonus, that's all there was to it. he's got psychopathic tendencies, watch a couple of interviews with him to see this. the other interesting thing is what has happened to the city of London since the big bang? so the upper class partnerships and the old boys city club was busted wide open by thatcher. result foreign banks swallowed up the whole city of London's financial business. they employ an international jet set banking class (in London usually eurobankers), they avoid tax wherever possible & they take huge reckless gambles with other peoples money (this didn't happen in the English partnership model as the owners had a stake in the business and cared about its long term future).

    • @joehart7260
      @joehart7260 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      zatara wood I don't really see the comparison. Anyone guilty of fraud should be punished, a pub is a small concern however and cannot be expected to have the same vetting and accounting procedures as a merchant bank. The old boys network were more than happy to employ people like Leeson to make "loads of money" for them. They cannot escape the responsibility that came with that decision.

    • @zatarawood3588
      @zatarawood3588 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe Hart its just an analogy to remove it from its social context.
      yes, the management failed in their duty to their shareholders and employees however Leeson was a crook plain and simple. he lied to other staff and auditors and fabricated documents. when you get someone like this in a management position like Leeson was put into its extremely difficult to catch them out quickly enough to prevent damage. You see the same thing happen at SocGen and then at UBS in recent years and they both had extensive systems in place.

    I saw that documentary - Trader (1987). Also fantastic. The only thing I have beef with is that in the documentary it showed that his hedge fund predicted the 1987 collapse using charts, but I'm skeptical about the method they showed in the documentary of how he used that to predict price movements in the market. Anyway, as a novice I love any movies relating to wall street/iinvesting. Barbarians at the Gate is also a good one.

    That is why we now have a treasury middle office to control product and exposure risks.
    The TMO sits between the front and back offices and ensures that traders/ dealers don't pass accounting entries for their transactions, which directly hits or somehow hides the P&L A/c.

    It made me feel sick. I couldn't believe my eyes. I've never thought of that as a literal statement ever in my life until that moment -- I honestly questioned what I was seeing. Bug? Nightmare? I feel physically sick to my stomach all day.
    I had lost money before in bull markets, pre-accepted. But to see so much money disappear instantly because I made a mistake?
    It made my stomach churn.

    In real life, executives at Barings did attribute Leeson's success to being in the center of the "information curve" at Simex (a termed they coined) and defined it in a way that sounds an awful lot like front-running orders (which at least at the time of phoning in orders and limited information- was considered the height of unethical behavior). So it was a funny BS rationale with a new term - hence my lol.

    horse crap - he profited financially by taking the bonus; he profited professionally by taking the credit for the client trades....
    He also completely covered his employee's loss and closed the position..... and then did it all over again.

    Forgive me if I'm being repetetive. I haven't checked the comments if it was mentioned here but if you want a bigger picture on what happened (and how absurd and contradictory the facts as they are at the moment are) watch Adam Curtis' "25 Million Pounds".
    There are far better movies produced on the whole finance sector.

      Cian Rees The beginning of "Release the pressure" from Leftism, the interpreter is Leftfield. There are some other songs from Leftfield used in this movie. I like Leftfield, and this movie made me to know the group and its songs. :) The songs are old but still contemporary I think.
      Edit: "Release the Pressure" was also used in an O2 advertisement in the late 90s or early 00s, at lease in Germany where I come from.
