Thank you for being open-minded regarding your pros and cons for each of the filters, and not a "this is bad" or "this is better". They each have their purpose and intended use. It's not a one size fits all kind of thing.
I’ll add one important mention about HOBs. To prevent water from overflowing onto the floor, place that small piece of rubber that comes with the unit between the unit and the tank. The pad tilts the unit towards the tank. If it clogs the water will flow back into the tank instead of on the floor.
These are my favorite type of videos, great information. I use 4 HOB filters, 7 sponge filters, and 2 box filters on 7 different tanks myself. Thanks for the great video!
Thank you so much for the detail you went in to about BOTH the advantages and drawbacks of each kind. I came late to the hobby and have only ever used HOBs (because "filter goes splish splash and is good for fish" is about all I ever knew) and am only now getting properly informed about the nuances. This was enormously helpful.

For us who have 1 tank only, I think sump is the best filtration, as you can put anything in it. Top sump will save electricity but has to be creative in hiding it, it can be eye sore for some. Great video BTW, very helpful!

I love the video it has a lot of great information, what works for me is mixing different types of filters I have a 40 gallon with a canister and a sponge filter and a 29 gallon with a hang on the back filter and a sponge filter and that works for me

Thanks for such amazing content! I have a 75 gallon peacock tank running on an fx 6. I also has a 29 gallon saltwater tank running on a canister filter, hob refugium and a hob skimmer.
Always enjoy watching, I use . sponge filters in all tanks as well a external and internal canisters but I’ve got to agree don’t like doing maintenance on the. canisters. But I’ve never used sump before but also wanted to. But don’t know enough about them
Great video! I like the sponge filter and it works better for my fish keeping style. I lost a lot of fish and shrimp to hang on the back filters due to bacteria and being sucked into the suction tube until I put a foam filter on the suction tube.
Nice breakdown of the different filtrations available. I have personally used all of them and depending on what size and bioload of the tank you’re filtering, they all work pretty well, some better than others. It depends on the application. I have HOB aqua clears on some of my tanks which work well and I also have a sump for my mixed reef which gives me many more options. The canister filter IMO works well but can have more issues with detritus and nitrates. Nicely done video Zenzo
Have three aquaclear 110s on a 125 gallon. Crystal clear water on a severum geo tank. Rotate filter cleaning. Its a breeze!

I use a HOB (marineland 375 pro) on my 75 gallon tang tank since the multies are always digging so much. Helps keep the water a little more clear.

Oase canisters all the way for me. :) Silent and their pre-filter is so nice and easy when it comes to cleaning.😍
And it seems like it's more common with internal filters over here in Scandinavia/Europe compared to the US.
Do you ever have to clean the rest of the media in the oase? Or do you only have to clean the pre filter?
@@kevinchan1408 That's the best thing with the Biomasters - only thing you need to clean is the pre-filter sponges, if you go for 100% biomedia in all the baskets. :)

Wonderful video. I needed to see a video that gave more information on each filter. But from my question to you is, what filter would you rate the best for a heavy pack cichlids tank?. I have been using a hang on back filter
I love sponge and canister filters
You need to try out a Seachem Tidal next time your looking at a HOB. I run them in my fishroom and the design and power of these filters are fantastic. I would recommend them for larger tanks for sure. In my fishroom all my tanks under 75 gallons are all filter by air powered filters. My larger tanks (75 gallon and up) have the tidals and a sponge filter. Works great on my cichlid tanks.
I loved this video! Nice breakdown of the different types 👍 I’m a sponge filter user too - love that there’s not much to go wrong and if power happens to go out there is no way the media will get dry.
Do you have any videos on the aquaponics of growing fruit and veggies in your pond? I’ve been wanting to put in an herb garden in my kitchen tank, but having trouble finding resources on it there are any plants that are toxic to add to aquaponic setups.

Love Canister filters,HOB, I have 6 big goldfish then due to Chemo made me weak,canisters too heavy,so I made top of the tank trickle filters.been using them for 2 yrs. now. Easy peezy. 2 bottles into a file plastic box . Pump water into bottles, holes on the bottom w/media. works great.put hose fittings under the bottle caps so hose won't come out.very simple and easy thank you
In my 75g, I have a Sunsun 304B Canister and a Tidal 55 HOB. In my 55g I have a Sunsun 304B and a Marineland Penguin 200 HOB. In my 29g Shrimp tank, I use a large double sponge filter that also has double compartments for media (Seachem Matrix)...
Great video... I have used mostly HOB filters, and sponge filters.... I am looking to set up a large African Cichlid tank, and may get my first ever canister... I am also possibly going to set up a rack, with multiple smaller tanks, so may do a larger air pump and distribute to sponges for that.... these will be lightly stocked with pairs/trios, and fry growout tanks...
Do you ever feel the need to add circulation to tanks with just sponge filters?
You didn't mention All-in-one type tanks, basically a small sump, so limited in space to some extent, but no holes in the tank, nothing outside the tank, and able to hide heaters, skimmers, etc.... typically provides mechanical, biological, and possibly chemical, as well as a good bit of flow... and SURFACE SKIMMING... I love this aspect...
I am getting back into the hobby and looking to pick up at least one Fluval Flex 32.5g, one marine and possibly one for freshwater.... I like that they look fairly sleek and contained, so will make nicer tanks for the main living space of the house... and the less "pretty" tanks with HOB filters, plumbing, etc....those can be in the FISH SPACE(s) for those who are really interested to go look at....

I have tried them all except a sump. I prefer canister filters. I have a 60, 75 & 125g tanks. I have 2 canisters per tank. Cuts way down on the maintenance. Alternate cleaning them so you don’t put a big strain on your bio filter. You always have the other canister fully cycled to replenish any loss when your service the filters.

On my 75 I have a canister with a uv-light and a tidle 110 hob heavy stocked with cichlids works well and some 20 long with a underground filter and a sponge filter and 50 breeders with just sponge filter in them guess it all depends on whats works in a particular tank
Here in the UK internal filters are a lot more common than hang on the back ones. Ive started using sponge filters a lot more just so much easier than a cannister filter to maintain. In my bedroom as well so don't have to worry about them leaking either.

I love my fluval 407 it's easy to clean
I have had the absolute worst luck with canister filters. 3 different ones all leaked, followed all the directions, maintained them regularly. I loathed cleaning them so I do not regret switching away from them. In my 75 I use an aquaclear 110 and a large sponge filter. Works like a charm, and easy to maintain so I’m more eager to maintain them more frequently. I think that’s the biggest point. If you’re the lazy type, go for something easier like a sponge or HOB. You’ll thank yourself later. Thank you for the educational video!

I have a 3.5g for betta and it came with a bag with carbon. So it function as all the media mechanical chemical and biological since bacteria likes to live in the carbon.

Yes, you can have an overhead sump that feeds back into the tank.
For a 30 gal cichlid tank I have a hang on the back and the water is slightly dark how can I fix this

So do you recommend that you do not put live plants into a cichlid tank? I have occasionally observed my bumblebee having a quick plant snack, but he’s the only fish in that tank. I imagine that with a tank full of them, they could do a great deal of damage. I just love how pretty a tank looks with lots of plants. 🙁

Enzo, what are your thoughts on undergravel filters?
I think they work very well if the tank is well maintained (gravel vac). I used them back in the late 80’s through early 2000’s.
I use Coop sponge filters and canisters. Want to eventually go to just sponges only. Any thoughts on 125 with 12 -14 peacocks and haps converting to sponges only. Also if a good idea how many sponges do you think?
That would work. I would suggest stacking the sponges. Maybe two to three stacks of two sponges each.
In UK and I've never seen a HOB in any store. It's usually internal canisters here and yes you can add chemical filtration if needed. Have to say easiest I ever used is an undergravel. Quick gravel vac with water change and done.
Check out dr Novak work on nitrate filters. BCB and plenums. I just built a slow flow nitrate filter out of 10” ro canisters

Sponge! We primarily focus on betta so slow is the way to go.

huh ? because they plug into the wall? is there a filter type that doesn't use power and plug into the wall? Every filter type I have uses power. What type of filter do you use for all your tanks that don't require power? Even the sponge filter uses power.
