    Because not all people that had short legs died. And natural selection does not work in today's society at all really, because very few people die because of some trait their body, handicapped would get help for doing stuff, like wheelchair for some; surviving isn't difficult, and thus humans won't really evolve. But one thing i think today's humans is evolving towards is a body that could handle eating alot, without need of working out. Although it will take millions of years.

    This is not "extinction!" Majority today are tall. Sure the trait survives, and there are defects like achondroplasia resulting in short stature. When you think of evolution and natural selection think "majority" then ask why is it so. There's always a reason. Even heritable diseases (ex sickle cell) have had their advantage and thus evolved (allowed to exist).

    Acquired characteristics ARE part of natural selection. For instance, to use your example, since the Dad was smart enough to be a good hunter AND teach his son to be a good hunter, that would be considered a trait that can be passed down: inelligence. His son was able to learn like his Dad once did and, like his Dad, he will more than likely teach his son. Intelligence is definitely included in natural selection. OR at least it ONCE was.

    As a man with shorter legs I strongly disagree that we are not capable of surviving.

      @tim707max 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yuliana Perea If the person with short legs dies and the long leg people live on that doesn't mean they evolved to something they weren't before. They already had the DNA within there species to have long or short leg this is nothing. If your kid is taller than you and has different color eyes there nothing crazy about that. We dont have the DNA within our race to ever grow wings we will never grow wings no matter how our environment changes we would die before any significant change would happen to us.

      well evolution is the change of time making natural selection to be that specific trait needed to survive.

    FACT ALERT. The theory is great but the math doesn't work. The randomness of selection occurs at the DNA Base Pair which codes for an amino acid as part of a long sequenced chain of amino acids. These chains are then folded with the assistance of another enzyme (protein chain) into functional shapes with water loving spots and water hating spots. The folded globules then do a function in the scheme of the life of the cell. Most mutations are irrelevant or harmful. The entire process is random, then selection acts on the whole organism, the organism with many features, some good, some not so good. Maybe it screws its way into the next generation and gene pool, maybe not. Either way, It takes more than 500 million years, JACK. Imagine that.

    Please bear with me, but this is something very new to me. I'm trying to understand it better - so maybe someone can help explain this questions that I have. :)
    So basically, in natural selection, it is nature itself which selects who, or what, gets to live for the survival of a species. This happens to a population, not on an individual level. I believe that this can happen in the animal kingdom, but does it always apply to mankind? For instance, the long-legged ones may choose to protect the short legged ones from getting eaten by bears, so to speak. Of course, this has to do with what sort of ethical code a society would hold on to.
    I guess I am thinking more in line with how mankind is capable of something higher than just surviving for themselves. Throughout history, different men and women have taken their stand to protect the weaker ones. Of course, the humanitarians, in the course of history, were few. Perhaps, within 10-20 years, only about 5% of society would rise up to protect the weaker ones. But IF 70% of mankind would do this, would the theory of natural selection no longer be considered valid in the human world?
    I really want to understand more. Thanks!

    • @TheMissSmitten
      @TheMissSmitten 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, I am assuming that Darwin, being a naturalist, only limited this theory to plants and animals, not to intelligent beings like us, am I accurate on saying that?

    • @TheMissSmitten

      Carolyn Raymond Boin One more thing. Oops.
      Since we are equipped with the ability for moral reasoning, wouldnt this factual scientific theory revert to being - for lack of a better phrase - just an idea, IF man chooses not to comply to it? It is still changable.
      A solid, scientific fact for me is that if I jump off a building, I would die. Even if I think otherwise - that I would somehow survive the fall - in the end, I wont be able to refute the law of gravity by morally choosing to not believe it.

      Charles Darwin studied birds (can't remember the specific bird) on the Galápagos Islands which is where he came up with the idea of natural selection. The different islands had different genetic qualities. One island had birds with shorter and stouter beaks to eat nuts and fruits while the same species of birds on the other island had longer and thinner beaks to hunt for prey in small spaces. The birds were less likely to survive on the opposite islands because of these traits

      natural selection is the basis for evolution but not the only one, natural selection is what gives the appearance of design, eyes that see, wings that fly, arms that grasp. While it looks like an engineered design on purpose this is not the case as not the same in happening as when an invention is made and modifications are made to it in efforts of perfecting it for use. To understand this go to Steven Pinkers video, " we only think we're free" .

    • @bracemebraceme9233
      @bracemebraceme9233 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK, Carolyn, here is what I think of your first question. If there are high possibilities that long-legged ppl in ancient time helped shorter ones, they might ended up get eaten by bears. So, Natural Selection still occurs. May be your point is correct, since nowadays ppl don't tend to be so considerate, may be the trait have lessened :)
      And for the second question, all I can say is you have right to come up another theory :)

    how do humans get different skin colors?

    • @stephenwaldron4213
      @stephenwaldron4213 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dark skin is advantageous in hot climates, as the melanin that causes the dark pigment can block out harmful radiation from the sun, sort of like the natural version of sunscreen.
      Lighter tones however are much better in climates where there isn't as much direct sunlight, as it allows the body to better get as much sunlight as possible to stay warm and produce vitamin D.
      This is why, if you were to compare a global climate map with a map of native skin tones, you would find striking similarities.

    • @tmoln2131
      @tmoln2131 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The evolution of human skin color is a response to two opposing factors: protection from UV rays’ harmful effects on the destruction of folate, and allowing the passage of UV light into the skin to synthesize vitamin D. The optimal skin pigmentation at different latitudes depends on the UV dosage at that location and the interplay of the two factors listed above.

      Document: The Gospel of St. Matthew (Ch. 28),The Gospel of St. Mark (Ch. 16), The Gospel of St. Luke (Ch. 24), The Gospel of St. John (Ch. 20)
      Claim: Jesus rose from the dead
      *Summaries of Accounts:*
      St. Matthew:
      - Mary Magdalene and the other Mary approaches the tomb, when there was an earthquake, as an angel descended from heaven. The angel dress in white, and of shining complexion, rolled back the stone and sat on it, to the shock of some guards, and told the two women not to be afraid, Jesus has risen and is not in the tomb, then saying Go quickly, and tell his disciples, to which they comply. On their way, they see Jesus, who tells them to tell his brethren he will meet them in Galilee.
      Meanwhile, some of the guards recalled the incident to the chief priests, to which the elders paid them to use the cover that Jesus' disciples came by night, and stole the body while they slept.
      Afterward, the disciples meet Jesus at the appointed place, where he bids them to teach and baptise.
      St. Mark:
      - Mary Magdalene, Mary mother of James and Salome went to the tomb to anoint Jesus' body, but upon arrival, found the stone already rolled back. Inside, a young man sat clothed in white, who told them not to be afraid, Jesus has risen and is no longer there. He told the to go tell the disciples that Jesus went ahead to Galilee where they shall see him.
      The first day Jesus had risen, he appeared to Mary Magdalene, who went and told Jesus' other followers that he was alive, but they didn't believe her. He then appeared to two others as they walked, who went and told the followers, but weren't believed either. Afterward, Jesus appeared to the eleven while they were having a meal, chastised them for not believing when they were told he was alive, bid them to teach and baptise, after which, he went into heaven.
      St. Luke:
      - The women who had seen the burial of Jesus return to the tomb to anoint his body. Upon arrival, they found the stone rolled away. They entered the empty tomb, and two men stood by them in shining garments, saying Jesus is not here, he has risen. The women, Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary mother of James, and others, went to tell the eleven disciples and other followers, but they did not believe them, but Peter returned to the tomb, to find only the cloth Jesus was wrapped in.
      Later that day, two discussed the events on their way to Emmaus, when Jesus appeared, unrecognized by them, and asking about their discussion, to which Cleopas recounts what had unfolded. They later came near to the village, and they bade Jesus to stay with time because it was late, and as he sat to eat with them, he took the bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. At this point, they recognized him and he disappeared.
      They returned to Jerusalem to tell the followers, that the Lord had appeared to Simon, recalling what happened, when Jesus stood among them and said, Peace be unto you, to everyone's shock. He told them not to be afraid, and showed them his punctured hands and feet, after which he asked for meat, and ate. He then told them that repentance and remission of sin should be taught, and promised them power from on high.
      He then lead them to Bethany, where he blessed them, partied and was carried up into heaven.
      St. John:
      - Mary Magdalene comes to the tomb, to find the stone rolled away, upon which she ran to tell Simon Peter and the other disciple, They have taken away the Lord, and we know not where they hath laid him. Peter and the other disciple then ran to the tomb. The other disciple got there first, stooped down and looked in, only to see the linen cloth, after which came Simon Peter, who went in followed by the other disciple, and saw only the cloth and the head wrap, wrapped together aside. The disciples then went back home, leaving Mary, who stooped down crying outside the tomb.
      She then saw two angels sitting at either said of where Jesus was laid, who asked why she was crying, to which she replied, Because they have taken away my Lord. She then turned around to see Jesus standing, but didn't recognize him. He asked why she was crying, and she, thinking he was the gardener, said, Sir, if you've taken him from here, tell me where you laid him. Jesus then said 'Mary', to which she relied Rabboni [Master]. Jesus told her not to touch him, but go tell his brethren he ascends to his Father, to which she complies, recounting the events to the disciples.
      Later that day, when the disciples were together shut in, in fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst, and said, Peace be unto you, and showed them his hands and side. He repeated, then said, as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you, after which he breathed on them giving them the Holy Ghost, and the power to remit peoples sins. But Thomas, called Didymus, wasn't there, and when told of what had happened said, unless I see for myself, I won't believe.
      Eight days later of being shut inside, Thomas being with the others, Jesus appeared again, and showed Thomas his hands, and side, and said to him, Because you've seen me you believe, but those who believe without seeing are blessed. Jesus showed the disciples many more things.
