The biggest misconception of minimalism is that it comes down to the number of items you have. It's NOT about that. It's having things in your life that have purpose, you get value from and trying to reduce the unnecessary clutter in your life. You can have 100 books or 10 books in your bookshelf and STILL be considered a minimalist, just as long as your find purpose and joy from it. Minimalism is different for everyone and besides, if you're travelling with technology of course you're going to want to bring your charger and things that would make your life easier. Yes, that makes the number of your items seem like a lot but it's not like you're carrying a bunch of random items from your kitchen drawer if you have no use from them.. Really like the style of your video! Keep it up :)

I couldn’t agree more though, minimalism to me is more about removing stress and excess from my life when and where I can instead of just removing as many items as possible. I don’t really consider myself a minimalist but tend to prefer a more minimal lifestyle, I was a bit disappointed to see so much negativity in the community around here, the support means a lot. :)
+Adam Foster I often use my phone as a monitor as I mentioned in the video and often write/need notes while I’m filming and using that monitor. I also have trouble reading long form (1 hour plus) on my phone without severe eye strain and headaches and opted for the e-ink kindle screen instead a few years ago. Granted, I probably don’t need a backup pen so I’ll give you that one. We should all be promoting a lifestyle we all believe in with positivity and inclusion, not negativity, judgement, and gatekeeping.
Minimalism is about having only things which are very necessary for you, owning just one thing won't make you minimal but if that one thing is all you need then you are definitely a minimalist.

For some reason these videos are all over my suggested. They're hilarious! People identify too much with the things they own. My tech bag includes my phone, charger, some pen I stole from a hotel, and earbuds XD
Sounds like a pretty trash tech-bag. Minimalism isn’t about being as cheap as possible. It’s about simplifying your everyday life by getting rid of clutter. If you use headphones everyday it makes sense to buy things that have quality. Same goes for your phone, laptop etc.
Those Zojirushi bottles are the best coffee commuter mugs on the market, at least for the money. I've dropped mine a few times on a sidewalk or parking lot; it has some light scratches from the concrete, but no dings. Every other brand of bottle I've had has dented with the first drop, even on a hardwood floor.
i enjoyed your video and I got a good idea for my tech bag. I am now adding a re-useable shopping bag. A simple idea I never thought of that sounded so brilliant when I heard you say it.
You could save room in the bag by putting your phone and your wallet in your pockets. It also makes them easier to access of someone rings you, or you need to pay for something.
Definitely a good move if you needed the extra space! I usually try and keep them in my bag when I can to keep my pant lines clean (a bit silly, I know) but it also helps a lot to prevent mindless phone browsing. Usually the first things moved into my pocket though if I have a heavier bag load any given day. Appreciate the support, thanks for watching!
It's definitely more than I'd like to carry, but I don't have the opportunity to work from a single location and typically have to bring my entire 'office' on my back to be able to work wherever I am 7 days a week. Made some significant decreases in my carry from last year but always trying to eliminate as much as I can.

Being a minimalist doesn’t mean you have to have very less items in your bag or even life, it’s all about having what you need, and in this case I think he did a good job because everything he showed is everything he uses on a daily basis.
Cat is so cute! I use the Dakine Mission Pro as my backpack.... Absolutely love it, and it's so small that I'm forced to not end up lugging around junk I never end up using!

a lot of people are mad because it’s not the bare minimum for the minimalistic video. in my opinion if you need these things and you try to shave it down as best as you can then good for you. id rather have 10 things i can’t live without then 20.
Definitely agree with you there. I'm always aiming to get rid of any excess, it's unfortunate that I need to carry all of my work with me but I do the best with my current situation.

WOW. I have been waiting to see the 2018 macbook pro find its way into your gear bag. I see why I like your videos so much. You and I are a lot alike. I have the Amazon basic camera/laptop bag and I seriously have my macbook pro, canon T5i, 3 lens and filters, my power bank, my drone with 3 batteries, my thieye T5e action cam and all accessories all in the bag and I strap my Amazon basic aluminum tripod on the side. My wife is like how do you put so much in that bag and not fall over. I would love to see your review on your macbook pro. I already know it blows my 2018 13" outta the water. I just couldn't take that old 2012 any longer with that A7III footage, it was getting so painful. Had my old apple card from when I got my last one though and used some interest free financing to get it. Spreading out the crazy cost definitely helps ease the blow. :) Haha, got those same comments from my wife too! This is my usual day carry but I've got a few other things that add into this too depending on my day, can get so heavy! This bag holds the weight really well though, much better than my old timbuk2. I'll keep it in mind that you'd be interested in a review, if I can come up with enough to talk about I'll be sure to make a video on it!

Some awesome gear, and some real food for thought. My work backpack is just too heavy. I’m a teacher in NYC so I have my laptop, iPad and everything else I feel is necessary but just feels too heavy. Think I’ll review what’s in my bag using yours as a blueprint. Cheers - J
I totally understand that, my bag is probably too heavy now but it used to be even worse before I really started to lighten things up. All of the little things really add up in weight too, something to keep in mind while you're reworking your bag 👍

zojiirushi rocks. I carry one daily with my coffee. awesome video and great items from the bag to everything in it.I just updated from 2012 MacBook pro to 2017 13 MacBook air. I really don't need more and now I'm looking for a new bag. Aer is making great bags but looking at Ridge commuter backpack as well as Qwstion simple office. Decisions decisions.

Great review! Minimal too- I work on a computer al day too and if I didn’t have a fixed office I’d be hard-pressed to pare it down to your level. I have a Zorurishi 12 oz thermos in black. It is amazing- it’s kept ice solid in my car for two days during the summer. Anywho I just bought an eBags Pro Sim Jr and am liking it. Any clue how this compares in size? I love the look of this pack, I'm torn between this and the Evergoods CPL24 for my work/tech pack. I know they're two very different bags as far as aesthetics, but they both appeal to me.

You beat me to the punch on this. Minimalist is: keys, wallet, phone and maybe a knife. Carrying so much trash that you need a bag to lug it around is the opposite.

That's awesome! I used to be a designer myself and actually went to school for that, but have switched over to photo/video work the past few years. I should have a review up sometime in the next couple of months but the laptop has been amazing. I've done a few design projects in illustrator, it's handled everything I've thrown at it extremely well these past few months. Come to Portland if you get the chance, it's pretty great here! Haven't spent much time in Seattle but I feel like Portland has much more character but you lose out on some of the big city feel.
Timbuk2 is great! I used and loved one of their bags for quite a while before switching to this one. Definitely was more than I wanted to carry, I've since started working from home though so I no longer need to bring my studio with me in my bag thankfully. Thanks for watching and supporting!

This is still my favorite bag. So much so that I bought the original tech bag and then a new version came out and I bought that one as well. I still use it everyday. It’s awesome. I’ve bought several other bags since owning this one, just to try and have yet to find a better replacement. It’s awesome. Don’t hesitate, just buy it! AER makes some of the best gear, for the money, that I’ve ever bought/used!

Definitely! I have a zojurushi thermos that I have used for a few years for my coffee and love it, but the hydro flask works pretty well for hot liquids as well 👍

Haha, the color came out much better in this one for sure! It just gets a bit more difficult in the editing with all that bright sunlight outside. No umbrellas around here! Only the tourists use umbrellas in Portland, haha. I’ve got my rain jacket when I need it though. I never used a case for the ray bans because my last few bags have a separate pouch just for them, usually works pretty well. Those battery packs have gotten small these days! At the time I was actually traveling to different locations so I had to keep it all with me. Love that zojurushi, still use it every day a few years later now!
I usually mix it up from a few different lut packs I've purchased over the years and sometimes just do it manually myself. I can't remember which lut I used specifically for this one but I have lut packs from Zack Kravits and Cody Blue and have been very happy with all of them 👍
No problem, happy to share! I would say the padding is decent. It does have a velcro top that I decided just to take off but that would help as well. I probably wouldn't trust a drop if I was carrying it separately but inside of the bag I think it would be safe. It's probably about 1/2 inch thick? Definitely thicker than an average laptop sleeve in terms of protection. Hope that helps!

Great video, very well done, but I’d like to point out one thing: I don’t see a reason to add the label minimalist to your video. Honestly, it’s just a normal backpack like many everyday carry backpack videos out there. And having usb 3 to usb c adapters when you already have a hyperdrive adapter is not minimalist at all. It’s just a constructive critic, don’t feel bad about it :)
Appreciate the honest critique! When I used minimalist in the title I was referring mostly to the design/style of the bag because that’s how the manufacturer markets their bags and it is a minimal design. Although I do live a more minimal lifestyle in many ways, I don’t consider myself a “minimalist”. I do appreciate minimal design though and prefer to remove as much excess as possible from my life. No worries, no need to apologize! If everyone wanted to actually talk about it like you it would be no problem at all. It has been unfortunate to see a ton of negativity around here (not from you) surrounding minimalism, it’s too bad that the community isn’t more open and positive to encourage others to live with less instead of shaming or trying to have a “fewest items” contest. I hesitated the title for this exact reason, although I’m not a minimalist I see minimalism in general as a tool in my own life that has been very helpful and has helped get me through most of my life with far less stress, starting years before the trend before I had even heard the term. I don’t think I will be discussing that part of my life any further on TH-cam though because it’s been made clear that I’m not allowed. Keep sharing your voice in the minimalism community though, it’s nice to see that there are still people that have a level head about things! :)
I do actually! Probably did a bad job of showing and fitting the bag into frame when I was unloading everything. The day pack seems great but just a bit too small for what I would need. I have the laptop in the proper compartment and my camera insert right in front of it in that same 'section'. I would actually love if this was a few liters larger if I could, but it's been doing pretty well for me these past few months. :)

This is my usual day carry but I've got a few other things that add into this too depending on my day, can get so heavy! This bag holds the weight really well though, much better than my old timbuk2. I'll keep it in mind that you'd be interested in a review, if I can come up with enough to talk about I'll be sure to make a video on it!
Your hydro flask has warranty. You can get on their website and they will send you a new one for any dings and damage.
Good to know, I’ll have to get in touch with them! I’ve dropped that thing more times than I can count. Still seems to be working well though but I might exchange if it gets worse.
No it’s only replaceable if it came that way.

I’ve got a rain cover for my bag and a waterproof jacket! The locals are strongly against umbrellas around here, haha.
Some awesome gear, and some real food for thought. My work backpack is just too heavy. I’m a teacher in NYC so I have my laptop, iPad and everything else I feel is necessary but just feels too heavy. Think I’ll review what’s in my bag using yours as a blueprint.

I totally understand that, my bag is probably too heavy now but it used to be even worse before I really started to lighten things up. All of the little things really add up in weight too, something to keep in mind while you're reworking your bag 👍

They’re already in a pouch within that bag actually, probably would be too redundant to have a bag in a bag.
As soon as I saw your thumb nail with the hydroflask, I thought to myself I would bet $50 this guy is from Oregon. First few words of the video, 'from Portland Oregon'. Its quite the trend we have here, just about everyone I know has one.

Thanks so much! My lunches usually go in the larger compartment with my laptop or I carry them separate in my reusable grocery bag. I usually bring a few day's worth of lunches at a time to work so I don't have to worry about it for the rest of the week. 👍👍

Great review! Minimal too- I work on a computer al day too and if I didn’t have a fixed office I’d be hard-pressed to pare it down to your level. I have a Zorurishi 12 oz thermos in black. It is amazing- it’s kept ice solid in my car for two days during the summer. Anywho I just bought an eBags Pro Sim Jr and am liking it. Any clue how this compares in size? I love the look of this pack, I'm torn between this and the Evergoods CPL24 for my work/tech pack. I know they're two very different bags as far as aesthetics, but they both appeal to me.

When you say you’re a minimalist but your bag is filled with stuff
You beat me to the punch on this. Minimalist is: keys, wallet, phone and maybe a knife. Carrying so much trash that you need a bag to lug it around is the opposite.

That's awesome! I used to be a designer myself and actually went to school for that, but have switched over to photo/video work the past few years. I should have a review up sometime in the next couple of months but the laptop has been amazing. I've done a few design projects in illustrator, it's handled everything I've thrown at it extremely well these past few months. Come to Portland if you get the chance, it's pretty great here! Haven't spent much time in Seattle but I feel like Portland has much more character but you lose out on some of the big city feel.

Timbuk2 is great! I used and loved one of their bags for quite a while before switching to this one. Definitely was more than I wanted to carry, I've since started working from home though so I no longer need to bring my studio with me in my bag thankfully. Thanks for watching and supporting!

This is still my favorite bag. So much so that I bought the original tech bag and then a new version came out and I bought that one as well. I still use it everyday. It’s awesome. I’ve bought several other bags since owning this one, just to try and have yet to find a better replacement. It’s awesome. Don’t hesitate, just buy it! AER makes some of the best gear, for the money, that I’ve ever bought/used!

Definitely! I have a zojurushi thermos that I have used for a few years for my coffee and love it, but the hydro flask works pretty well for hot liquids as well 👍

Haha, the color came out much better in this one for sure! It just gets a bit more difficult in the editing with all that bright sunlight outside. No umbrellas around here! Only the tourists use umbrellas in Portland, haha. I’ve got my rain jacket when I need it though. I never used a case for the ray bans because my last few bags have a separate pouch just for them, usually works pretty well. Those battery packs have gotten small these days! This ones just a bit bigger than my phone. Thanks for watching and supporting like usual, glad you enjoyed this one :)

That’s a lot of chargers.... Can’t you just keep some spares at work so you don’t have to lug them back and forth? Zojirushi = awesome.
At the time I was actually traveling to different locations so I had to keep it all with me. Love that zojurushi, still use it every day a few years later now!

What LUT/color profile do you use for you video?
I usually mix it up from a few different lut packs I've purchased over the years and sometimes just do it manually myself. I can't remember which lut I used specifically for this one but I have lut packs from Zack Kravits and Cody Blue and have been very happy with all of them 👍

No problem, happy to share! I would say the padding is decent. It does have a velcro top that I decided just to take off but that would help as well. I probably wouldn't trust a drop if I was carrying it separately but inside of the bag I think it would be safe. It's probably about 1/2 inch thick? Definitely thicker than an average laptop sleeve in terms of protection. Hope that helps!

Great video, very well done, but I’d like to point out one thing: I don’t see a reason to add the label minimalist to your video. Honestly, it’s just a normal backpack like many everyday carry backpack videos out there. And having usb 3 to usb c adapters when you already have a hyperdrive adapter is not minimalist at all. It’s just a constructive critic, don’t feel bad about it :)
Appreciate the honest critique! When I used minimalist in the title I was referring mostly to the design/style of the bag because that’s how the manufacturer markets their bags and it is a minimal design. Although I do live a more minimal lifestyle in many ways, I don’t consider myself a “minimalist”. I do appreciate minimal design though and prefer to remove as much excess as possible from my life. Appreciate your comment, have an excellent rest of your day!
Josh Fenn now I understood. Sorry for the misunderstanding, there’s a minimalist trend now, so you can’t say for sure what is what. The design really is minimal and aesthetically pleasant; nice setup!
No worries, no need to apologize! If everyone wanted to actually talk about it like you it would be no problem at all. It has been unfortunate to see a ton of negativity around here (not from you) surrounding minimalism, it’s too bad that the community isn’t more open and positive to encourage others to live with less instead of shaming or trying to have a “fewest items” contest. I hesitated the title for this exact reason, although I’m not a minimalist I see minimalism in general as a tool in my own life that has been very helpful and has helped get me through most of my life with far less stress, starting years before the trend before I had even heard the term. I don’t think I will be discussing that part of my life any further on TH-cam though because it’s been made clear that I’m not allowed. Keep sharing your voice in the minimalism community though, it’s nice to see that there are still people that have a level head about things! :)
Seeing that you don't use the laptop compartment for the laptop, would you prefer the Tech Day Pack over this larger pack?
I do actually! Probably did a bad job of showing and fitting the bag into frame when I was unloading everything. The day pack seems great but just a bit too small for what I would need. I have the laptop in the proper compartment and my camera insert right in front of it in that same 'section'. I would actually love if this was a few liters larger if I could, but it's been doing pretty well for me these past few months. :)
