    here in Vancouver my GF and I go car foraging in the tonier areas, as their fruit trees overhang out over the streets, so I park the car under neath and open the sunroof, she stands sock footed on the car seat and is able to select her choice of fruits and nuts, apples, pears, persimmons and chestnuts, it is really very funny to observe us, she takes quite a lot of delight in getting free fresh groceries, but a little scared to be reviewed on peoples security cameras later, I say value of entertainment of this lovely Asian lady carefully foraging through a car sunroof, many would give her a pass, we are parked on the road with the trees overhanging us and Vancouver is famous for having foreign owned and being empty anyway, likely we are helping the owners in the long run

    Hey man, love your vids and loved this one as well. Regarding the red shrooms, I'd personally advise against eating them at all, cooked or not. Hallucinogenic mushrooms tend to be unpredictable even when cooked and those toxins, while it's true that they would degrade, they will never be completely gone and it's just not good for the liver/kidneys. So it's really not worth the risk imo.

    My grandfather told me once about a ration pack he had. It contained caramel candies, cigarettes, and chewing gum. The caramels were meant to be surges of calories and sugar to keep you going and the gum was meant to keep you going when the cigarettes ran out. While that energy drink mix probably isn't tasty, I'd bet it comes with a lot more vitamins and electrolytes than his caramels. In the end, it would keep you going longer to do what you did today; forage for actual food sources. But holy moly. He said he'd rather find no food in the woods than get stuck with the pack that had menthols in them.
    I love your videos. Always inspires me to go out into the woods with my little guy. Thank you very much.

    I do wonder how or when you started foraging, and reference guides to reccomend or other sources. Are maggots or other bugs in a particular fungus a good sign the mushroom isn't toxic, or what are some good givaways, if any? I've been foraging most of my adult life (and a little bit of less-adventurous foraging such as blackberries, since as long as I can remember) - I just kind of picked up all the ideas along the way.
      No, maggots in fungi are not a reliable indicator of edibility for humans; insects have quite different body chemistry to people - they are immune to many things that will kill us, and vice versa. The only way to be sure a fungus is edible is to identify the species and be sure of that identification

      Obviously this is an old comment, but if you do decide to start learning to forage, I'd recommend you find an expert that would be willing to go with you or allow you to go with them on a foraging exercise. Videos and pictures are good starting guides, but, especially for mushrooms, you really need someone in person to help you learn to identify edibles properly. It does take years of practice; however, foraging can be a brilliant hobby!

    Came across your channel only v recently via the scam-baiting/busting videos, but stayed for the variety. I’m glad you’ve stuck to ur guns and doggedly maintained the channel’s variety despite pressure from both viewers and YT itself. The result seems far more sustainable and both avoids that classic ‘TH-cam burnout’ and also shows a broader, deeper impression of your personality and interests. And being an apparently well-adjusted, well-rounded chap, there’s a really nice mix of intriguing, original videos. In short, a unique channel.
    Thanks, subscribed.

    im not in a position to give you advice and i constantly fail to follow it myself, but arguing with ignorant people is useless. if they want a fly mushroom (thats what its called in german) to be edible, nothing will change their minds. i recently argued with people demanding to know that humans can live like a carnivore eating only meat... because carbs are supposed to cause all sorts of diseases.
    its also funny that people tell you to pick more mushrooms than you need, since here in austria that wouldnt even been allowed. there are italiens frequently crossing the border to collect tons of them to sell on the market. thats why we have restrictions.

    • @harambo88
      @harambo88 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      maybe you should do some research. not only is living like a carnivore perfectly possible. it heals many illnesses. the great jordan peterson wouldnt be alive without it. he had auto-immun issues and it went completly gone by only eating beef.
      vllt solltest du dich auch ein wenig informieren. nicht nur, das ne reine fleischdiät gut geht, es heilt die meisten zivillisationskrankheiten. jordan peterson wäre anders garnicht mehr am leben. er und seine tochter hatten schlimme auto-immunkrankheiten und eine reine rindfleisch diät hat ihn "geheilt"

Though I won't be venturing out as much the way you do, I've really grew an interest over a year in planting my own flowers and veg. About the Fly agaric toxicity bit, having looked into this it's pretty clear that muscarine is highly toxic however as wiki says "Muscarine has been found in harmless trace amounts in Boletus, Hygrocybe, Lactarius and Russula. Muscarine is only a trace compound in the fly agaric Amanita muscaria; the pharmacologically more relevant compounds from this mushroom are ibotenic acid and muscimol."
    Ibotenic acid is the main neurotoxin that could cause damage, though a large % of this can be converted into muscamol via decarboxylation (typically by heating/ drying). This leaves you with a relavitly harmless albeit psychoactive mushroom.
    In any case all 3 of these chemicals are water soluable so if you just want to give those beauties a taste test you can boil and discard the water before ading to your dish.

    This is fascinating. I must say I enjoyed the foraging and survival meal aspect of this more than just the actual ration packs! Also, I've eaten fly agaric a few times - it's very easy to cook them and neutralise the toxic (incl. psychoactive) substances in it. I find it a really nice taste. Very earthy and woody taste but not in an unpalatable way.
    It is also really very easy to prepare for psychoactive purposes, neutralising the muscarine (and converting the ibotenic acid to muscimol), though I advise readers responsibility with it and not trying anything without research first and/or being with an experienced person. It's not like your normal British "liberty cap" magic mushroom. Atomic is right in cautioning against muscarine and that is why it must be prepared first, and the ibotenic acid will make you feel ill too (which is why you convert it in prep).

    I am so amazed at the fact that there aren't rampant blackberry brambles everywhere! Here in many cooler parts of Australia, blackberries are a feral weed of of massive proportions! Perhaps it is having the deer grazing the forest that keeps them in check as I believe they do eat blackberry foliage. Cattle, sheep and pigs don't eat blackberry foliage, but I know goats do. Feral pigs, goats, water buffalo, camels, rabbits and deer are all a problem in various areas here as well. It is fascinating. Perhaps it is the fact that the climate is cooler over winter than here, though blackberries do seem to naturalise in the mountains here where there is snow occasionally in winter.

    • @AtomicShrimp
      @AtomicShrimp  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it's because blackberries belong here - they are kept in check by both the conditions and a host of other factors such as insects, fungi and competition from other plants. It's often like this with species introduced somewhere else - without all the other things to balance them, they grow out of control
