  • Back in August, I unboxed a Russian IRP-P Daily Ration Pack - In this video, I finally got around to field testing it. (Do bear in mind though, I'm a UK civilian testing a Russian Military ration here - so be prepared to forgive a bit of ignorance)
I spent a whole day in the forest - dawn to dusk - with the IRP-P providing my three meals for the day.
Of course, a whole day in the forest provides a few things to look at and enjoy too - so some of those are in the video as well.
Here's the unboxing video for this ration pack: • Russian IRP-P Daily Ra...

I was looking at that stove of yours, and I don't know if you had a picture or something that you were copying, but at a glance, this is how I thought it was supposed to work:
Fold the corners down, and use them as a stake to secure it in the ground, allowing for use on slightly uneven surfaces by digging them each in to the appropriate depth, then fold the center bits up, so you'd have a flat square at the top, with a much larger windbreak on each side, I think. Put your boiling container atop it and light it through one of the corners.

The spoons are a kind of emergency standby - most troops would carry their own mess kit with them. Sometimes ration packs are distributed at sites of natural disasters, where not everyone is going to have cutlery. You ought to try to get a British ORP Spork, or a long brown US MRE spoon. They're sturdy, and built to last.

In regards to the stove, get in the habit of carrying three things extra on your person. 1) A small baggy with vasalene covered cotton balls, 2) One to two lighters. 3) A pocket Life Straw. The cotton balls light very well and putting one with the stove tablet would have helped to light it. The lighters would give you extra fire power and the Pocket Life Straw would have ensured you would have clean water to drink if you were able to find a water source. These things are small enough to keep in a coat pocket or small waist pack or even in your pocket. Bravo on the backup stove! Take care! 😊

My best guess at "intended use" of this concerning the hot drinks, is that you were expected to have sugar in your tea, and milk powder in your coffee. I think that's more common "on the continent" whereas having milk in tea is really a very British thing. Generally speaking, British tea is also much stronger than what I have seen in other European countries, so it makes more sense to dilute it with milk, and it is probably also why Mr. Shrimp was a tad disappointed in the strength of these tea bags. No idea about Russian habits in specific though and it's entirely possible that my West European experience is not applicable there at all.

    • @cccpredarmy

Russia is a tea-drinking country aswell. "Mayskij Chai" is a cheap tea brand. Soldiers do not expect much from it. As you pointed out correctly - put a lot of sugar in it for taste.

I love how beautiful the places you forage and walk to are. So much moss, and trees around, as well as beautiful plants and fungi. It also looks so clean there. Makes me feel a bit jealous.

2 years too late, but you need to rough up the fuel tablet with your knife/a twig. That way the flame takes hold and melts the solid fuel which helps to continue the cycle. Great video, thanks!

The US Army did one thing right with our MRE’s the spoon.
It’s strong, long and will last a while . As far as rations go some are good and some are horrible but they do pack them up with other stuff that will get you what you need.
If you want I can send you a few to try.

you didn't fold the legs down to allow more air, lighting solid stoves require little wind to light. The same reason a kettle will not boil in a windy space, it has to be shielded from the wind.

"there is no really wild wilderness here in the south of England"
I was going to comment when the video started... "are there really any wildernesses in the UK left?"

    • @sarahstrong7174
      @sarahstrong7174 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There is some wilderness left in the U.k. Not as much as in bigger less populated lands. In the South West there is Dartmoor & Exmoor, not enormous but big enough to get lost in if you are on foot & to get sucked down into a bog & never be seen again if you are unwise & un-prepared. Once the light starts to go, or in a storm or a fog it is more or less impossible to tell whether you are about to step from solid land into a morass or not. Or fall down an old mine shaft. The weather is very changable too. I have seen it snow on Dartmoor in June & for a short time it became a white-out.

It's true. The UK has little that can be classed as wilderness. Previous generations have sanitised almost every acre. It's so disappointing when you see places like Canada where they have huge swathes of land where maybe only a few hundred people MAY have set foot there, in all of history.

Now the days are getting longer and we're in BST, I'd love to see more of these "day in the woods on rations" videos, even if it's roughly more of the same or something different, I'd be glad to watch. That is, if you're willing and able - I guess these days out can take their toll with all the walking.

I really do appreciate these walks through the British countryside, it is also nice to see the sunlight too.
Of all the military rations of the various nations have some sort of pâté all except for the United States which puts either peanut butter or jalapeño cheese in their MREs.

Sounds like the meals in tins are quite good quality. All that beef! Chicken would have been cheaper to produce. I guess the manufacturers recognise the people eating them need decent nutrition, fats and calories.
