Dude I bought an rtx 3070 laptop and guess what? I just play PR, on 1440p 70 ish fps because the engine suuuuckksssss Edit: it doesn't suck, the EA guys didn't know if BF2 engine could handle all these mechanics, it's a testament how it still runs.

I actually think PR is the better looking game than squad. Its character models looks hardcore and it feels gritty with how dirty is not even mentioning the awesome sounds. I really prefer a lot of the aesthetics of PR than any other game today, very cool
I feel the same way too, it kind of reminds me of the same appeal Arma 2 has in comparison to Arma 3. Arma 3 may have better graphics and overall polish but it just doesn’t have the same aesthetic feel as Arma 2. No amount of hunting CSAT in Altis will ever compare to a deployment to a bleak and grey Eastern European ex-Soviet country or the sprawling mountains and valleys of a Central Asian country that had seen invading empires come and go.
THIS is so accurate! I play PR and keep thinking to myself how amazing the atmosphere in each map is, dark gritty and war-torn. Squad is a good game and I have 100+ hours on it but my god do I hate the art direction of the game... It looks so shiny and unrealistic to me and I deleted the game as soon as I got back to playing PR after years.

I wasn't even around for them - I'm a young guy and was a wee lad when old clunky games were the norm, but a lot of people nowadays can't stand anything other than moving at the speed of sound, quick scoping, and hipfiring away. In older games like PR, if you try to run & gun you end up dying all the time unless you're an absolute god and/or extremely lucky... just like in real life. You actually have to play the game tactically, and yet people yell it's unrealistic... even after Squad implements mechanics straight from PR because it's better. It grinds my gears. Superficial graphics and superficially smooth gameplay takes me out of it when the mechanics are lacking, but for so many people it's the other way around.
3:50 This isn't quite correct, the limitations on the spawning screen are not there because we feel like forcing players to interact with supply crates but because 7 slots is all we have and so the choice fell on the most dominant classes of your average infantry squad being selectable there.
4:50 7.62 in Squad it's actually super painful, it incapacitates you immidiately if it was fired at < 50m, and any other distances you'll have like ten seconds to bandage yourself before you fall.
I remember I once played pr while drunk at 4 am, screaming at the top of my lungs while charging at the enemy then almost shit myself when my whole squad got wiped out by enemy apc and I was hiding in a ditch, explosions everywere around me 🤣🤣
SQUAD devs gotta just add more maps more factions and weapons to the game, it seems PR pumping out more content without being scared, SQUAD devs seem to be scared to add more, SQUAD STILL DOESNT HAVE CAS!
closest we've got to CAS in Squad is the Mi-8 with rocket pods in the MEE mod, would love them to add a North Korean faction though, they've got some interesting and unique equipment

from what i've heard hog admins were ban happy and the general community didn't like them, I can't find their server in the browser and apparently they got DDOSd badly
I keep returning to PR loads of times, despite the ping issues, I still find PR a lot more fun. Since Squad added the ICO and microtransactions and lack content, unlike PR. Squad recently didn't feel right for me and it just seems to slowly turning worse due to the addition of microtransactions and just my experience with some squad leaders are just silent and doing nothing, even when the game is visually good, I just don't feel like playing it. I still play PR to this day and I find it a lot more fun, even if my ping is around 250 for some servers.
Squad's weapon handling is good but it comes off so wacky because it cant replicate what PR is trying to replicate despite its jank. Weapon sway is I think too much and random for Squad, if it moved a bit like breathing - it would make it better I think. Anyhow, PR is at its best with large battles - especially the new Vietnam maps are a favorite of mine.
The devs and the sheer amount of amazing content the game has is amazing and it drew me to return to PR again after finally getting into Squad, but... Even with the Chinese ownership and Squad having less content, at this point I can't get pas the technical drawbacks of PR. The FOV alone is a dealbreaker. And the funny thing is some in the PR community have developed coping mechanisms where they explain it not as an technical downside of an old engine, but as a beneficial balance decision!
I never had any problems with PR's FOV, but to be honest, 100 FOV looks fish-eyed to me and puts me off, even though it gives you a distinct, meaningful gameplay advantage in every single game you play.
@@VynalDerp I'm not sure what it i exactly in BF2, but it's possibly the old standard of 2000s - 75 horizontal. Which is abysmal. FOV sliders have been widespread since the early 2010's and games have no problems with it, even ones where individual skill is much more valued than in PR. Like I said, it's a coping strategy.

Wider FOV is a quality of life upgrade, true - it makes the game more accessible to more people (everyone has different eyes and what looks fine to one person is claustrophobic to another) but it does have a meaningful gameplay impact. A wider FOV isn't just how much of a fish you want to be. It literally lets you see more of the game world you otherwise wouldn't be able to see... pros in these games often choose between FOV based off of a wide variety of factors because of it's gameplay impact. A sniper in CS picks a smaller FOV to make farther enemies appear larger and thus easier to snipe, while a fragger in CS picks a wider FOV so he can see and thus react to enemies better. I agree it's cope to say PR doesn't have a slider for balance as it's mostly a QoL issue. Most of the time you die in a game of PR it's because you were caught out of position or just had bad aim, and the game isn't very reliant on picking out players from a billion miles away (prevalence of scopes) nor twitch shooting (low player density in most areas of the map), so FOV doesn't give an insane advantage. It still has a gameplay impact and does give a gameplay advantage. It's just relatively minor (albeit still noticable) in some games (like PR) and major in others (like CS).

If there is anything I’d remove from this game is the extremely awful suppression blur when being shot at. I understand it encourages the player to seek cover but I shouldn’t be penalized with a blurry screen just cause the enemy is suppressing fire at me. It’s fine when you get hit but not when bullets happen to fly near you.

Stingers weren't a game changer, it's just an ordinary anti-soviet and anti-russian propaganda piece. Mujahadeen had DShKs and other large caliber guns to battle helicopters. Soviets adopted fast and started installing systems which reduced heat signature etc. Also the regime which USSR installed lasted longer than USSR itself. Pretty impressive compared to Americans who's afghan regime crashed even BEFORE they left lol. And of course USSR didn't fall because of afghan war, you got to be a complete morоn to belive that. The Project Reality experience is hindered by various shit. While I know the limitations of the engine one might question the motivation to continue, the terrible movement mechanics , the community full of russian servers, and english speakers often encounter ddos attacks. These issues greatly make me want to die, I guess yall used to play garbage games from the early 2000s and call It " Awesome ".

The thing about it is that BF2 had uniquely shit gunplay even for 2005. CoD 2 feels smooth and modern while DICE didn't get their shit together in terms of controls until Battlefield 3 (Even Bad Company 2 didn't let you strafe while sprinting).

Don't forget there is COOP in PR, its so much fun and even got a dedicated playerbase!
I play coop to destress often, its a lot more forgiving when you fuck up and at least no one is trying to DDOS the server every 2 hours

The Project Reality experience is hindered by various shit. While I know the limitations of the engine one might question the motivation to continue, the terrible movement mechanics , the community full of russian servers, and english speakers often encounter ddos attacks. These issues greatly make me want to die, I guess yall used to play garbage games from the early 2000s and call It " Awesome ".

Braindead. I played both PR and Squad. 1000hrs in Squad, 7 years in PR. Both are fun, but Squad teamwork rarely touches PR.

The thing about it is that BF2 had uniquely shit gunplay even for 2005. CoD 2 feels smooth and modern while DICE didn't get their shit together in terms of controls until Battlefield 3 (Even Bad Company 2 didn't let you strafe while sprinting).
You people realise that the Squad devs were formally members of the original Project Reality mod, right?
The only problem with Squad and other games like it, is the community or lack there of. The OG Project Reality Mod community is long gone.
