Why buy an SQ2 over an S3? It's got 81mm more ground clearance. We bought ours because we can take it up rough country tracks and across fields without scraping the bottom, but still get pretty decent performance as a daily drive. For outdoors people they're very useful.

A no compromise video. Genuine comments based on real life experience and advises for potential buyers.
Excellent and not something you see/hear on many channels.

Have been looking for a compact SUV with some road presence, and performance and this fits the bill. You buy this over an S3 due to the slightly higher road clearance - coupled with Quattro you can do some off roading which will come in handy! That’s my reasons for looking at purchasing one 👍🏽

The reasons to buy the SQ2 over the S3 were the following: it looks more modern and different/stylish, it is much smaller (important, as it is going to be a city car), it is a mini suv so you sit higher (it will be driven mainly by a woman and she prefers a higher sitting position), and performance will be very similar, basically you cannot find a smaller suv with that much performance, that's the main reason! That spec didn't make the SQ2 any favours though.

it doesn't look better, it's a granny car. it is not much smaller. There is absolutely no reason at all to get SQ2 over s3, SQ2 cost more too.

Having an S1, an S3 & a long serving Yeti, we're looking to replace the S1 with something with more boot space & practicality, but still with a relatively small footprint. The SQ2 offers 10% more bootspace than the S3 & crucially you can also tow with the SQ2, you can't with an S3 legally. So when the Yeti finally departs, the SQ2 could go some way to plugging the gap left by the Yeti for us. If only they made an SQ3.

Seen a few of these on the motorway (standard Q2 and SQ2). They look a lot better in motion than they do on screen.

the reason i am buying one is as an older person who has had many a sport/performance car i was finding it much harder to get in and out so this for me ticks all the boxes and yes i love the colour fed up with bland bland grey -black - white

Exactly my reason for buying one , cannot get down into an S3 anymore.

You ask why buy the SQ2 over an S3. My wife wants an SUV for the high driving position, but coming from an Evoque, she wants something smaller and easier to park. We chopped the Evoque for a Mini Countryman ALL4, which I hated from day 1. The engine is aweful, the gearbox uninspiring and the ride is just a joke - I changed the run-flats to try and improve it but its still rubbish. An S3 doesn't fit the SUV requirement, a Cupra Ateca is BIGGER, the SQ2 is smaller than the Mini and not much price difference. My SQ2 comes tomorrow, and I think it will be a massive upgrade from the Mini - good riddance.

I bought a Q2 simply for tne (a) slightly higher driving position (b) more head room, and (c) slightly bigger boot. I'm afraid the head room on saloon cars (A3, A4) is just to low/cranped for me.

I just ordered the facelift SQ2 for it’s better overview and more comfortable sitting position compared to the S3. Kind regards from Berlin.

Thanks for the review. Actually I like the simplistic and edgy looks, especially with 2-color styling, black roof with for example silver or daytona gray. I guess senior citizens are potential customers. My parents (>70) like to sit higher, but normal SUVs are far too big. They don‘t need the space any more. But of course, not as SQ2, a small engine is enough for them.
Comparison Mini Cooper Countryman (SQ2: John Cooper Works) - what would you rather have?

I got the new face lift Q2 35 turbo last summer, black edition in black with black alloys, tinted windows and get people saying what a great looking car it is all the time, guess the colour and styling pack make all the difference, that yellow does it no favours lol ..it's a really fun car to drive, handles amazing and it's quick enough ..my daughter was sick in the back the first day i got it so you might be onto something

Found your video as I am promised a SQ2 loan car next week when my A5SB gets some post delivery add ons. That was interesting to hear your comments on the better ride over the S3 as I owned an S3 in 2017 and had to sell it because basically the ride was to firm and harsh resulting in my wife getting sick sitting in the front! Very good video, should give potential buyers plenty to think about

Hi; Why would I get this instead of the S3? I have a particular situation. Right now, I am deciding between a Mini Countryman JCW, BMW X2 M35i or this SQ2. Maybe if the GLA A35 was available I would decide otherwise, but I am going to get this SQ2. My particular situation is my horrible garage, the most dreadful nightmare you can think of: steep slopes not only upwards, but sideways!!! Actually, I had an A3 for a few days and I kept touching the space between the wheels with the floor. I have to make 3 or 4 manouvers to turn in and out of every slope, and the front wheels lost contact at the beginning and end, therefore skiding(figured I needed the four wheel drive). So, the S3, the mini and the BMW are bigger than this, and the S3 is also lower(reason I am not getting the A35 A Class, and would make the GLA A35 a difficult option). I love the Mercedes interior, especially the new cockpit, but the GLA A35 not available until a year from now(they tell me). The space between the wheels is also shorter, good for my garage. I have an offer for a fully equiped SQ2 for just under 39000 pounds, 46000€. It is not my first option, but it is the one that fits. I would definetely go for 1.- GLA A35 2.-BMW M35i 3.- Mini Countryman JCW 4.- SQ2...but it is the one that most easily will fit in my garage and I have what I consider a very good offer. However, I do not think Audi's board were thinking about people with crappy garage space. In the future, I will be making around 60000/70000 km/year. Although I would love to have a more sporty feeling(oh that Mini), this will also make my rides more comfortable, but more boring, and better suited for the highway(half of my trips, more or less), and I hope they get speedy. Still thinking about it for a couple days, but my mind is almost set with this SQ2. BTW, I am going for silver color ; )

SUV ride hight and space always a bonus while you travel off the main course say like in Italy... you can easily peer beyond low walls, small embankments and it might be faster than an S3 for several reasons: faster for more suspension travel in roads you might otherwise be regretful to take, faster for proper ride high to have a stop in some nice off-road recreational area that you couldn't get with an S3, faster because you can comfortably load your bottles of water inside and a box full of them in the back... because it isn't funny paying water 1.5 EUR every 0,5 L... it's more than any premium FUEL, which everybody knows it's about 70% tax.

Think people who like cars but don’t KNOW cars expect it to be bigger than an a3 inside, due to the suv styling.

  • @gentleimpact3580

Totally agree with you on the uncertainty of why to buy this. I tried a non S-Spec Q2 and it was neither totally nice, nor sporty, nor special.
I would say that if you do not use the rear seats much, the bigger boot is a plus compared to the A3, but that’s all.
I went for an A1. Lower seating, much sportier feel, especially with the 200 hp. Although an S1 would be nicer...

I'd always go for a hatch over an SUV anyway, can't see the point, but I'm not a soccer mom!

I'm not a soccer mam either but small suvs definitely have there place, I love the ability to be able to mount kerbs if I have to, and Just the extra clearance always seems to come in handy, I'm a car nut and love the idea of a sports car,but a small suv just makes more sense for some people's day to day lives.(My car Diesel Mitsubishi Asx)

I regularly see an RS Q3 near my work - makes me wonder why you'd buy one ... You don't buy a small SUV for it to be a rocket ship (do you ?!). I guess they are bought by the wealthy that says they want a Q2 Q3 etc, but the best one - bad choice though - get a comfy one !!!!

Looks like lego or a Tonka truck! Colour and that wheel style just don't help. Typical crashy / hard VAG suspension coupled with poor design for back seat passengers induces travel sickness. Reason people will buy it over an S3 is for that 'rugged SUV' look. Sure it will be popular on the school run, even if the kids vomit all the way there! 😋
