  • Jew Town, situated at the heart of Mattanchery, is famous for spices, handicrafts, and antiques. It is a busy street between the Mattancherry or Dutch Palace and the Paradesi Synagogue, and was an important Jewish settlement in India. The legend on the formation of Jew Town is that the King of Kochi gave a piece of land to the Jews who came to Kochi for trade. The word mattan is derived from a Hebrew word meaning donation and cherry in Malayalam means settlement. Thus the name of the place, 'Mattancherry', is related to the donation of land by the King of Kochi to the Jews.
Jew Town evolved as a spice-trading center with the formation of the Kochi port after a huge flood in the river Periyar in 1341. It is speculated that this resulted in the destruction of the port Muziris (possibly at Kodungallur, about 30km north of Kochi). There were Jewish settlements in Muziris. With the destruction of Muziris, a group of Jews from Muziris shifted their trade and settlements to Kochi. Till the formation of Israel in 1948, Jew Town was a bustling space, famous for Jewish traders and their settlements. Only a few Jews remain today in the area, as most of them have migrated to Israel. Some of the buildings in Jew Town carry Jewish heritage and history to this day.
The Jewry in Jew Town was divided mainly into two groups - Paradesi Jews and Malabari Jews. Locally these groups were called White Jews and Black Jews. The division was based on arguments of racial purity. The Paradesi Synagogue, presently an immensely popular tourist attraction, was built in 1568, and was owned by the Paradesi Jews. About 150 meters south of the Paradesi Synagogue at the side of the main road in Jew Town, one can find a synagogue of the Malabari Jews, originally called Kadavumbhagam Synagogue. It is said that this synagogue was built much before Paradesi Synagogue. The cemetery of the Paradesi Jews is well kept in Jew Town, but that of the Malabari Jews has been encroached upon. Books by Jewish scholar Nathan Katz illustrate the life of Jews in Jew Town, Mattancherry. The one and only international pepper stock exchange in the world still functions in Jew Town.
