It's very interesting to watch. Growing up in Louisiana, I've seen this and was always fascinated with seeing 👀 a man work with his animals. It's also great to see a man and his children spending time together. She's very polite and attentive.
Thank you so much! And especially thank you for the kind words on my baby. She’s a joy no doubt and I’m so proud of her. Thank you for taking time to watch and comment! It means a lot to me. Take care and do come again, please
Looks like you got some fine help there. My dad always said you could feed a mule on what a horse wasted on the ground. He said, mules are smarter tan horses, that if a mule got caught in barbed wire it would stand there and wait until you found it and a horse would fight it until the tore the legs all to pieces. I don't know I reckon I just always liked them old long eared devils for some reason.
I agree with everything your dad said! I’ve always sorta leaned towards mules although I’ve had a little of them all. Anyway, thank you sir for sharing with me. And taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
You’re always welcome to stop by. Just let me know in advance. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care my friend and do come again, please
Haha, yes that’s about the sum of it. Mules will get at least the same amount of work done on half the feed no doubt. Sometimes more…depending on conditions and whatnot. Anyway, thanks my friend and thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
I really like the way you talk about your mules, your love and respect for them is apparent. I am also amazed how much your mules can pull, after all they are not that heavy. I am used to having horses that weigh more than 2000 pounds. With the ever increasing average summer temperatures ( right now we are 8 degrees above normal here in NW Missouri) I fully understand why you prefer mules, and your feeding points are convincing.
Thank you sir for all the kind words. I truly appreciate it. Mules are all too often misunderstood. So, I wanted to take time and just do a little explaining on them. From someone who has worked a little of everything. I really appreciate you taking time to watch and comment as usual. I appreciate it! Take care my friend and do come again, please!

Also, horses are lofty in spirit, and donkeys are sweethearts -- generally speaking. I have no experience with mules other than some parade mules, so I can't speak on them. But, watching your videos, it seems that your mules are sweethearts too.
There are several mules that will take after the donkey. They bond different with a person than a horse does. They bond you form with a mew is more like a dog. Thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again.

Great informative video Zach. Honestly, I know very little about pulling logs with animals, I have always used machinery, my grandfathers did however use animals and here in Australia they preferred to use Bullock teams, the reason for this was a lot of the reasons you have outlined and why you prefer your mules over draft horses. The biggest reason they often told me was that the bullock teams were better in a low speed heavy pull, as they seem to find a lower gear in other words then the draft horses ever could, but if they were pulling wagons at high speed they preferred the draft horses for this application. I also think that the bullocks were cheaper to buy and they were easier to feed and maintain. Anyway keep up the good work.
Yessir you bet! I’ve talked to several oxen drivers here in the U.S. and they share those same sentiments as well. Low geared and low end torque. Only thing with regular oxen is, they get hot! I had a bad mule when I was a kid. The bars of his mouth were nothing but scar tissue where he'd had a bicycle chain bit in his mouth, and I don't know if the bit had made him bad, or if he'd had the bit because he was already bad. You couldn't turn him or stop him. He had thrush really bad, and trying to get that cleared up was an exercise in good reflexes. He wanted to kick every time I picked up his foot. I never did get to work him. I rode him a few times, and that was an adventure. I ended up trading him off, and I believe he went to South America to be a pack mule on a coffee plantation. There was a buyer in the area when I traded him, and I was told that was where he went. I never wanted another one. He ruined me. Your mules are giving me a different opinion of them. Yours work really nicely. Now I have broken a team of miniature donkeys, and they were very precise and gentle. They did hate dogs, however, and I had a runaway with one of them when she saw a dog and took out after it, cart and all. Small as they were, I did work them some. I built a little sledge for them, and we used them to haul manure and haul firewood.
I am not sure what is going on with my comment… I tried to respond earlier and somehow it is showing it did not go through. Anyway, I will try again… I am sorry to hear about your John Mule too many times rank mules have spoiled people, you can get good ones and bad ones and either male or female. But John mules generally require a stiff hand to get them broke. I am glad to hear about your donkeys though! I love donkeys so much. Thank you for always taking time to watch and also comment. It means a lot to me. I really appreciate it! Take care of my friend, and do come again please.

thanks for the talk I recall my gramps saying the same things you said he said they wood put a mule with a horse to slow the horse down when breaking him in to plowing .

Yes, sir, that is the truth! Many times I fail, but I do try hard! Thank you for such kind words, and also for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again!
I’ve always had horses. For some reason I decided to pull a pair of mare pony mules out of the dog food line. They are incredibly sweet, and easy to train.
Aw man! That’s cool 😎 yes even 30 yrs ago, there was a lot more folks doing it with animals still. There’s not many left now…sadly! Anyway, thank you for the kind words and also taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please.
No sir. I’ve always liked them though. And I have a couple good friends that use them up north. Oxen were not very popular here in our parts, and I believe it is due to the heat. At least from what I’m told from my oxen friends… Thank you for the question and also for taking time to comment! I appreciate it
Do you know of someone that keeps a Mammoth Jack around at all times? I've been sorta looking at a pair of gray Percheron mares that I think could throw some beautiful mule foals. No one around here seems to have anything. Thanks Another interesting video.
@@RobertJones-ey9qzprobably the closest person I know right off would be Anthony McAllister. You can look him up on Facebook and send him a message. He keeps a few jacks. Scott Wilson is in Ohio and is also on Facebook and keeps a gaited Jack. There are a couple folks in Kentucky with good jacks. Either way, you’re gonna have to travel a little piece. AI is another option. Townley Jackstock in Buchanan TN ships semen on their jacks. But you will need a good vet familiar with AI and draft horses. Townley Jackstock is also on fb. Hope this helps a little
Great video ! Idk if there is any difference, but what I’ve saw of those brabant horses really impress me. Would be nice to have a pair of mules out of those.
Thx buddy. The brabants are great horses. You just have to careful with CPL and scratches in those type of horses. Otherwise, magnificent. And if I was gonna get any more mares, I’d consider some brabant influence for sure. Thanks for the kind words brother and for taking time to watch and comment. Take care buddy, and come back anytime
If the mules work all day what would you feed them for the day and when. Are they fed after work? How much grain and hay per big mule? Is that oats, barley or corn? Thanks.
So, they get all the hay that they want once I turn them out into their pen. The hay is free choice and I keep it stocked. It is just regular grass hay. I also feed them 3 gallons of 11% protein sweet feed grain mix every night. They will not eat it all at one time… But will snack on it all throughout the night. And normally by the next morning, they will have it all cleaned up. They get 3 gallons per mule which translates into about 15 pounds of feed each. This is pretty much standard practice every day whether they are working or not. I like to keep my animals in good flesh and fairly fat. I would rather have them a little fat than poor… I believe if they are going to work for you, then you should feed them well. My animals give me 100%, and I feel I owe it to them the same. I do not spare any expense. Thank you for the questions and I hope I answered them for you. Thank you for taking time to watching comment. I appreciate it! Take care and do come again, please
@@zachodom7486 Thanks for taking the trouble to answer, much appreciated. Would that be about half a small bale of hay per mule - another 20 lbs? You dont expect your truck to go without gas - same with the mules. I totally agree - gotta feed them well if you want to get the best out of them. Besides it is our duty to take good care of them which you obviously do.
@@zachodom7486 thanks Zach. I found another old 1957 article on draught animals and then recommend 1lbs concentrates and 1 lbs hay per 100 lbs liveweight for heavy working horses/mules - or 2% of live weight per day. So you are on the money. Another question regarding ploughing. How long can they plow in a day and what area is realistic - lighter soils.
@@african7498it really just depends on the soil type, condition of the animals, size of plow, and number of animals, etc. But an in shape draft sized team (2 animals) pulling a 12” walking plow…can plow up to 2 acres a day. Bigger plows require bigger animals. Riding plows usually require bigger animals or more of them. Plowing with 3 is nice. You can just keep making rounds and not resting the animals so much. 4 is even better if you have them 😊
Awesome buddy! Thank you and thank you for taking time to watch and comment as always, my friend! I appreciate you!! Good to hear from you. Take care and come again, please!
I started cutting timber when I was 14 yo. I’ve been in the logging business in and out ever since then. I’ve been in business for myself since 2014. I’ve worked on conventional, mechanical, and horse/mule logging crews. Thank you for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again! Thx
Hey pal why the Amish strap at their britchen been my experience that if one mule falls the other one is going over on top of the other one i just use it to drive them to the tongue. One of the worst wrecks i had was with a Amish strap and one horse slipped on the pavement during the summer big mess
When I say that, that means for them to “stand up” in the harness. Tighten up a little. Not walk off forward. But just stand up where they are. Don’t come back anymore at all. I also say “straighten up.” That means just what it says. If one is flaring out a little or something such as when hooking or turning…I’ll tell em to straighten up. Or stand up. Sometimes I’ll call one mule particularly and give them an independent command such as these if one is a little out of kilter. Hope this answers your question and thank you! You’re most welcome and thanks for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please
My dad told me that when he was growing up in the depression that his family cut timber. They had mules and horse teams. He said that the mules were easier to work with. They showed the mules their route 1 time maybe 2 and they would snake the logs out themselves. Just had to have 1 person to hook up and 1 at the landing. Now with the horse teams someone would have to travel with them.
I have had both horses and mules alike that would both go to and from on their own. But I will say mules catch on a little quicker to it. After having had both… I just generally prefer mules! I like the way they bond with a person, and also they’re easier keepers. Thank you so much for taking time to watch and comment! Take care and do come again, please
Thank you, sir! I’m quite fond of her myself! Thank you for the kind words and thank you for taking time to watch and comment. Take care my friend and do come again, please
He is doing real good. He is actually starting to mow hay with them just a little bit. I will try to get some video of him soon. Thank you sir for asking. And thanks for taking time to watch comment. Take care and do come again.
As far as Henny, will they be shorter because the mom is a donkey? I've seen some pictures of hennies and thought their ears looked shorter and heads looked a little different. Would this be because the dad is a stallion? Great info by the way, brother. God bless as always
Typically speaking, they have more of a “horse”’type head and usually won’t grow off as big as a mule would if it were the other way around. So yessir, you’ve got the right idea. Thank you for the kind words my friend and I’m glad ya enjoyed it. Take care and do come again, please!
I’ve personally never worked oxen, but I have friends who do and love them. They’ve always fascinated me. They’re a little slower and don’t tolerate heat as well, but they have a whole lot of torque and can move a big load at a standstill easier than a horse or mule can. Facts! Anyway, thank you for the question and thanks for taking time to watch and comment. I appreciate it. Take care and do come again, please

Well, the size of average timber a man works dictates the size of the animals he needs to work. Most times, my two mules can handle most of the timber I cut. But every now and then we get into some of that sure enough big stuff and need 4 mules. It’s not very often, but it does happen. Thanks for question and I hope I answered ya well enough.
He’s doing very good. We actually trimmed his feet and gave him plenty of loving just the other day. I’m sure they will do riding a little also. Sb surely loves him and he her as well.

Thanks Zach, very interesting video ,It looks like your daughter likes being with you, be safe and be well
Thank you, sir, I’m glad you enjoyed it! And yes, me and her both have a good time together. Thank you for the wishes, and thank you also for taking time to watch and comment. As always. Take care and do come again.
Thank you for sharing such a great video and sharing of your knowledge. Your little helper is going to grow up to be quite the teamster. Wishing you all the best.
You are most welcome! And thank you so much for the kind words. I sure do hope my little helper grows up as you say. Me and her had a lot of fun making this video. Thank you also for taking time to watch and comment! Take care and do come again.
thanks for the talk I recall my gramps saying the same things you said he said they wood put a mule with a horse to slow the horse down when breaking him in to plowing .
Yessir you’re welcome! And thx for sharing. I believe that’s right too. Mules are slower and more methodical in what they do for sure. Thx for the kind words and thx for taking time to watch and comment. Take care my friend and do come again, please
Most excellent presentation. All you do is try your hardest every day.
That’s is super cool 😎! I wish you all the best with them. Thank you for taking time to watch and comment: take care and do come again, please
When I moved south my old land lord talked about the family saw mill and all the mules they used to get logs to the mill.
Aw man! That’s cool 😎 yes even 30 yrs ago, there was a lot more folks doing it with animals still. There’s not many left now…sadly! Anyway, thank you for the kind words and also taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please.
have you used oxen?
Thanks
Another interesting video.
Where are you located?
@@zachodom7486 NE corner of Indiana. About two miles from Ohio and eight miles from Michigan.
You are very good with your mules.
Thank you sir and thx for taking time to watch and comment…take care my friend and do come again, please
Very good video Mr Zack thanks
Yessir yw! Thanks for the kind words and also for taking time to watch and comment. Take care my friend, and do come again!
@@african7498half a bale (20#) would be about right per mule per day. And you’re welcome
4 is even better if you have them 😊
Now Zach that's a great video good job on the video I have to say the difference between mules and horses think you for knowledge your friend Billy
Awesome buddy! Thank you and thank you for taking time to watch and comment as always, my friend! I appreciate you!! Good to hear from you. Take care and come again, please!
How long have you been in the logging business
I started cutting timber when I was 14 yo. I’ve been in the logging business in and out ever since then. I’ve been in business for myself since 2014. I’ve worked on conventional, mechanical, and horse/mule logging crews. Thank you for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again! Thx
Hey pal why the Amish strap at their britchen been my experience that if one mule falls the other one is going over on top of the other one i just use it to drive them to the tongue. One of the worst wrecks i had was with a Amish strap and one horse slipped on the pavement during the summer big mess
I agree. I just forgot to take it off… I even mentioned that in the video. Thanks for watching and commenting. Take care and do come again!
Sarah Beth is cuter than a pretty little button .
Thank you sir! I am quite fond of her. ❤️ thank you for taking time to watch and comment. Take care my friend and do come again, please!
What do you mean when you say, "Y'all stand up there" when you are driving your team? Thank you!
Thank you and it does answer my question! Have a blessed day!
@@wagonshocampfirecookin7794awesome!! Take care 😊

Good video and God bless
Thank you, sir! And same to you… Thanks for taking time to watch and comment as usual. Take care and do come again, please
We love your mules too….❤❤
Thank you ma’am! It is good to hear from you…
I think mules are more agile then the draft horses
I’d say that’s true…they’re a little lighter on their feet for the most part. So rightly so…
My dad told me that when he was growing up in the depression that his family cut timber.
That is some beautiful country.
Thank you ☺️ I feel blessed to live here no doubt. Thank you so much for taking time to watch and comment. Take care and do come again, please

How is Mr summers coming along with his colts?
Take care and do come again, please!
what about oxen for work animals
I’ve personally never worked oxen, but I have friends who do and love them. They’ve always fascinated me. They’re a little slower and don’t tolerate heat as well, but they have a whole lot of torque and can move a big load at a standstill easier than a horse or mule can. Facts! Anyway, thank you for the question and thanks for taking time to watch and comment. I appreciate it. Take care and do come again, please
where not perfect not even close if your bad get good if your good get better.this is why we need a perfect creator. thx kindly peace be wiwith you and yours. Ps be cool.

You was gonna say the down fall of the mules how often do you use a 4 mule team?
Well, the size of average timber a man works dictates the size of the animals he needs to work. Most times, my two mules can handle most of the timber I cut. But every now and then we get into some of that sure enough big stuff and need 4 mules. It’s not very often, but it does happen. Thanks for question and I hope I answered ya well enough.
How’s your pony doing Sara Beth?
He’s doing very good. We actually trimmed his feet and gave him plenty of loving just the other day. I’m sure they will do riding a little also. Sb surely loves him and he her as well.
Alice says I’m just trying to get a snack dad
Haha, yep..always lol. They act like I don’t feed them 🤣🤣🤣

What was that sound from the camera person? Well, wherever it came from… A fart?

Horses move faster mules and 🫏 are better packers and hill climbing animals they pay more attention to where they stepping.
Yessir you’ve got the right ideas for sure. Miles are just a little more careful with things compared to horses imho. And that’s why I prefer mules. Anyway, thank you sir for always taking time to watch and comment. I appreciate it. Take care and do come again, please
