$10,000 Camera VS $100 Camera, Comparison Underwater. How much do you need to spend?

  • We took 4 different cameras ranging from $100 to $10,000 for a dive to test out which was best and how much a person really has to spend to get the footage or photos that they want.
I did the camera comparison with my partner at Freediving Central Daniel Parsons. We took a Sony A7s mark 2, an Olympus EM5 mark 2, a Go Pro Hero 8 and an Apeman Action Camera. We were lucky to get good vis for the dive as well!
If you're keen to learn to freedive in Australia get in touch with www.freedivingfamily.com we run freediving courses all over Australia!

This really needs to be uploaded in 4K, youtube compression and low bitrate kills this comparison.

Hey Adam, I really like what you do but I think you could elevate the image quality of your videos by extending your knowledge on cameras.
First of all setting white balance in camera is not color grading or balancing.
    Try this:
    - set a custom white balance whenever you can using a grey card especially underwater!! (I'm sure you can buy a waterproof grey card) this will fix the green tint in your footage. Above water you can get away by using the presets in your camera: Sunny, Cloudy etc...
    - record in Cine 2 picture profile (pp5 in your camera maybe) it's a flat picture profile that will give you a bit more dynamic range and flexibility in post
    - Set in camera sharpening to -7 (sharpen in post if needed)
    - Expose manually whenever you can. You overexpose a lot, you often blow out the whole sky sometimes even when you could achieve proper exposure on the face and save those highlights at the same time, I'm not sure if it's because you use auto exposure or it's just your taste but don't do that :)
I can imagine how hard it is to live life, freedive and vlog at the same time but you are a machine :D so please don't take this negatively

just like all cameras the difference between a good and bad is the contrast.
If you use a cellphone or similar "small sensor" gadget details will be washedout while a big sensor will capture it and show more depth. when taking landscape photos you may not really need the details as much as when you focus on a close object.
When it comes to video its the same thing but u also need to consider the compression. you will clearly see a difference between big and small censor camera but the question will always be if its good enough for what you are doing. like uploading to youtube will compress your video alot and depending what you are doing the extra details may not be necessary.
which is the reason professionals use full frame cameras (the bigger sensor the better)

Well def a different video to what I am used to seeing. Yup the go pro hero 8 is a great camera (they have come along way, the stabilisation is awesome as well) As a A7iii Owner I will mention the camera really shines with the user. Yup the footage was a bit shaky and the Sonys don't have the best IBIS but if you are just shooting without a particular profile then u will get average results.Slog and Cine4 are a preferred flat profile to maximise DR but you have to expose properly as well. Also Lenses make a huge difference. Another difference is a full frame sensor combined with a fast lens whilst pushing iso's to 10k or more ( you can basically see in the dark)I could imagine it would come in handy on the bottom of the ocean

Cool comparison, I think with a custom white balance on the song at 20m it would blow any action camera out of the water, excuse the pun! That $10K rig is nice but if you leave it on auto like the GoPro it doesn’t make much difference. Horses for courses like you say.

I did analog photography underwater for 30+ years. Digital photography underwater I started with Gopro. It has a brilliant wide angle lens. If you add lots of LED Lights absolutely brilliant. I Almost never shoot ambient light. On Land I use Olympus OM-E5. I have a full ubnderwater set of cases accesories etc. It is my backup system. Never been used. From what I have seen with my friends, they carry the huge case accesories lights and stuff on the plane. Then they have to decide what they are going to photograph before the get in the water, Wide, normal, macro etc. Me I use a TG6 in a cheap aftermarket case. Of course Strobe, LEDs, home made brackets and a Backscatter wide angle lens adaptor. You can screw it on or off underwater. This can deal not only with Wide angle, Macro but also Micro. Tjhis cost less than 1500$ INCLUDING STROBE AND LEDs.

I ordered the Apeman A100 last year for 100 €.
    Sent it back, it's crap.
In perfect lightning conditions it kind of works, but as soon as it gets darker and especially with changing conditions, it produces garbage.
Videos in low light surroundings are just black, where a standard mobile phone still takes perfectly good pictures.
Software is also not bug-free: transmissions via USB keep breaking up, menu is not practical.
Its enough to take snapshots for snorkelers, but for that you might as well get a 30 € model.

I have a GoPro hero7, u know its good for some video shooting, but not really for pictures, and the angle is too wide even in linear setting. so, Im thinking if I should take my a7rii down to the water, but I found it so costly for the housing. then I saw this one: a universal housing (outex.com). however, it states that waterproof to 30ft... hmm

More expensive camera's have a higher dynamic range, which allows you to see more detail in the shadows and highlights. If your scene has a low DR you do not need a big camera. The Video is limited by it's codec and bitrate. It's the TH-cam codec that kills the image quality, especially when it is uploaded in 1080p or lower quality. RAW, LOG, HLG and 1012 or bit colours are the things you want in a codec, but you also need a computer and software to process it all.Personally I'm looking forward to a GH5 and a cheap housing and my F1,8 wide angle olympus lens. Shooting open gate 5k, 10bit H265.
With the olympus you should shoot in the cinema 24p -200Mbit OMD LOG format to gain the highest quality.
With Sony Slog 2 or Slog 3.

    • @DanielMann
      @DanielMann 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Sony s-log profiles fall apart when they are in 8-bit codecs such as on the A7S ii. I'd only use it in bright sunny conditions. It retains highlights better than it does shadows. I have a GH5 in a Nauticam housing, the 10bit makes such a difference for grading but what will change your footage more than anything is a custom white balance at depth. I normally point it at some sand or light rock to achieve this. The v-log profile is also great on the GH5 if you purchase the upgrade. The best wide lens for the GH5 underwater is the Olympus 7-14mm F2.8. I've got the Panasonic 7-14mm F4. Would be nice to have the extra stops of light you get with the Olympus.

I'll get the a GH5 with V-log.About the custom WB, I had this trick in my mind: put a small white sticker inside my dome, and use that to AUTO WB? In post I'll crop the 4:3 to 16:9 so the white dot will not appear in the final video. What do you think?

No, you need to spend $20,000. Time to part with some pennies.

Sorry adam, great video idea , but we can't see actually the difference, putting 4 windows in only a fhd mainframe is too much, we can't appreciate detail difference.. i suggest you to put one by one the videos in 4k , in a 4k youtube video... also those cameras like oly and sony give their best in 4k mode, the fhd is not optimized..thank you ,bye
