I was looking through the drawers in my dad's router table and found a brace for sharpening a handplane blade. It reminded me that I had seen Katz-Moses scary sharp video. So I started looking for it again. I came upon your video while looking back for Jonathan Katz Moses. I had the time today to bring out my ol 1977 Stanley for a going through. Enjoyed your vid a lot, and I also am appreciative of your good natured competition with Jonathan. Main thing though was that I was inspired to break down my planes for a good cleaning, de rusting and sharpening. Thanks!
One step that I recommend after de-rusting is to rub everything down with light oil and wipe of any excess. It will keep the micro pits from immediately turning black or begin rusting again in a garage or workshop.
Paste wax and polish while still in pieces is critical for where I am because of the dampness. Vinegar bath leaves a layer of carbon on the surface as it eats away the iron which is messy to deal with. Doesn’t look like that’s a big problem with this product. Thanks for the video.
Greetings! Thank you for the very informative video! Beginning wood worker and new subscriber. Could you do a tips and tricks video and explain how to use and explain how the yhe parts on a Hand plane works? Thanks again!
Is the knob stuck to the screw but free of the frog? Or is the knob, screw, and frog all locked in place? This can make the removal steps different depending on the set-up.
Great video but I have a question. How far forward do you set the frog? I'm having issues with getting thin shavings and I have yet to see a video on this. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
Try far enough so the blade won't touch the back of the mouth and not so forward that the blade binds with the front of the mouth when adjusting to depth... took me 3 days to figure that one out.
Sir. What a blooming good idea. All these clever logs doing the 8th of a micron I do believe you have stumbled on a war hope they do battle. yyyyyeeeer bring it on.
Yea that is what I am talking about using a smoothing plane f-ing gossamer shavings WHILE SMOOTHING not edge jointing. Did some one say squirrel !!!! gotta go
Haha, the #katzmoseswalkerfeud battle has a clear winner now! The shavings you took are stunning, can't believe my eyes. Do you think this smoothing plane would be able to take a good shaving from a random-grain-direction surface? I recently tried using a number 5 jack plane on a cookie slab (3 trunks grown together, very unique piece) and couldn't get a decent pass even though the plane is nicely tuned.
Just to set you straight Will .it's NOT a chip breaker . Chip breakers are on machines . The part you are referring to on a hand plane is a CAP IRON. Well at least it was 60 years ago when I started my apprenticeship.
I've heard them referred as both. More specifically, the chip breaker is the leading edge of the cap iron. If you search chip breaker they are selling replacement cap irons under the description of chip breaker.
@@wmwalkerco you may have a frankenplane? The lever cap might not be original? Doesn't matter for a user plane. As long as it works. The body looks like a 1930s model. But it should have a keyhole lever cap.

Love your channel. I was wondering as to why you changed the look of your videos from your old ones. Your color grading and lighting seem really different. Your old videos had a cinematic quality about them. There's nothing wrong with the new format, its just different and I was curious. Keep up the good work.
I like how you don't assume we want to hear you blather on and on like JKM. Your vids are much more concise and to the point for those of us with some experience.
I love restoring old planes. Every time I’m doing it I just thing about what they’ve made or who they’ve been used by. Most of my planes are over 100 years old. Great video 👍🏼 much better than that katz fella
Interesting. There seems to be conflicting information out there. The plane dating flow chart indicated type 15. I know there are many that are swapped parts. A quick ebay search shows many type 14s with the kidney shaped lever cap.
@@wmwalkerco if the toe and heel are raised then it's a type 16 per both Wood and Shop and Hyper Kittens flow charts. Also the patent for the kidney bean hole in lever cap was filed in 1933 which is a type 16. Any other plane with that lever cap is either a 16 and up or been swapped in.
I was going to subscribe to your channel until you claimed that besting Jonathan Katz-Moses was something to brag about. Oh what the hell, I’ll subscribe... I watch him for a laugh too.
Well as a kid in Jolly old England my woodwork teacher always said that those who put a secondary bevel on a woodworking tool do it only because they can not sharpen a blade the proper way. The tools he sharpened were like scalpels they were so sharp. I sharpen my tools flat on one side and only one angle on the other side finished on a leather strop. I could, of course, show you how if you like. LOL Just kidding of course!

Any tips on how to free a depth adjustment knob that is frozen in the frog? I cannot move it to save my life.
Have you tried soaking it in vinegar or metal rescue? Penetrating oil? Heat?
Is the knob stuck to the screw but free of the frog? Or is the knob, screw, and frog all locked in place? This can make the removal steps different depending on the set-up.
Blowlamp, let it cool a short time, then blast it liberally with WD40. Let it stand, then try to undo.
